Aaron Woosley - Bedford County, Tennessee

For many years, I have been trying to obtain source information to establish Aaron Woosley (b.1753 Va.: d. after 1830 Bedford County, Tennessee) as the father of Elizabeth Woosley Evins (b. 1791 Va d.1875 Bedford County, Tennessee). I have a lot of circumstantial evidence, but can't nail it down solidly.

I also have been trying to trace Aaron travels after leaving Halifax County, Virginia (about 1799) and his appearance in Lincoln County, Tennessee in 1818 (applying for his Rev. War. Pension). I have some circumstantial evidence that he moved to East Tennessee (around Knoxville) and then to Kentucky, before coming into middle Tennessee.

Can anyone provide any help?

Tom

Additional information obtained after locaing tax lists for Halifax and Amelia County VA (linkpendium.com and Binns Genealogy) and finding other sources online and in the local library:

(1) In Virginia 1760 - 1820 following surnames appear to be associated with Woosley ancestors: Woosley, Woslei, Ousley, Ously, Eusley, and perhaps others.

(2) Thomas Woosley (with three spellings) appears in court records in Cumberland Co. VA (across the Appomattox River from Amelia Co.) c. 1758-1761.

(3) Beginning about 1762 Thomas Woosley appears in Amelia County as a hired hand on the farm of Edmund Walker. (Note: I've found no records indicating his marriage to Elizabeth Walters or Walker).

(3) Beginning about 1782 various family names begin to appear in Halifax County, and the Woosley name appears there continuously to the end of available records in 1811.

(4) There are records for BOTH Thomas Senior (in Halifax Co) and Moses Senior (who appears with Moses Jr. living with John Tabb -- see above -- in Amelia Co. in 1789). However, Moses appeared in Halifax in 1783-1786. The records I've found so far can support either Thomas Moses Woosley, sometimes called Thomas Senior and sometimes Moses Senior, or two different men.

(5) Note that the appearance of the two Moses Woosleys in Amelia Co. in the late 1780's is consistent with the marriage of Moses Woosley to Elizabeth Butler there.

(6) Samuel Woosley first appears in tax records about 1790, which would be young for the Samuel Woosley b. 1775. There are two Samuel Woosleys shown in tax records for 1797, but only for that year. The preponderance of data leads me to believe there may well be two different Samuels -- an elder, father of the Thomas Woosley of Butler County Kentucky, and a younger cousin of Thomas's who later settled in Edmonson county Kentucky.

Any thoughts on this information would be welcome.

Do you know if Thomas & Elizabeth Woosley were related to a William Henry Ford? William was born abt 1880 in Michigan and died around April 1964 in Polk County (Lakeland), FL. William is my grandmother's father and we are trying to find any relatives. She does not know much about his family other than his mother's name was Esther. Thank you for any information.

Submitted for your consideration

Summary:

I believe I have found the legendary Moses Woosley in Amelia County Virginia in the mid 1700's in land records where he is named Moses Youdaley/Youdaly (presumably pronounced "Oodley" as a variant of Ousley/Oosley).

Records also show a Delman Youdaly/Yudale who would presumably be Moses father or older brother.

As shown below, these records are later linked to the name Moses Woosley, presumably either this same gentleman or the Revolutionary War veteran his son by proximity to the same individuals and/or surnames.

Comment: All earlier extant records had seemed to apply to a Thomas Woosley who is now referred to in most generalogies as Thomas Senior or Thomas "Moses". I am exploring the possibility (with others) that the famous "Thirteen sons" of Moses or Thomas Woosley might have been the combined list son sons of the two gentlemen surviving the Revolutionary War. (I've also recovered records where a grandson of Elijah Woosley, Thomas A,, said his grandfather was the youngest of seven sons, five of whom were patriots, in 1910.)

Background: In land and tax records of Amelia Co. VA as available OL and transcribed into books in the library, I have made the following connection:

1790: Moses Woosley, paying taxes living on or adjacent to the property of John Tabb.

1776: John Tabb sells land adjacent to Moses Youdaley.

1769: Thomas Tabb and Moses Youdaly sell to Wm Johnson 100 acres adjacent o Paulin Anderson.

1756: Delman Youdaly sells 150 acres next to Pauling Anderson to Thomas Tabb.

1745: Delman Youdale purchases 100 acres next to Paul Anderson from John Mulden.

+++++

Thomas A.
Callie, I live in south central Illinois in Mount Vernon and have access to a lot of records which might be of interest to you. There are so many John, Charles and Ronald Woosleys, however, that I could use more information about the individuals we are looking for. In my database, I have a Callie Woosley, born 30-Jun-1916 in IL and died May-1979 in Crystal Lake, McHenry Co., IL. Know anything about her? I also have a John Woosley, born 22-Jun-1938 and died 31-Mar-2000 in Melrose Park, IL. Social Security number for John is 322-26-9348. Otherwise, I have no direct references in my database but I have scads of people who might be connected. Please let me know if you have more information. Dale Woosley, Mount Vernon, IL

Macsisak

Your Nathaniel Woosley is a brother of my Samuel. It appears he came with their elder brother Thomas to Christian County Kentucky about 1811, served in the War of 1812 in a Tennessee militia with his son John(son) who appears in later Livingston Co. KY and Illinois census data. Another son, Joshua, lived in Pike County Illinois and has an extensive biographical summary regarding Nathaniel.

Major James Woosley settled in Arkansas, from whence he served in the Confederate militia while most of his family moved to Texas. Note that in some records constructed from oral histories, he appears to be confused with his uncle James Woosley who settled in the Columbus Ohio area.

I had noticed Patience Baley / Pheba Bailey in the records I had found but have not had time to pursue any possibility of connection.

I am interested in this line. I have Patience Baley (b. 1810 Missouri d. 1868 Wood County, Texas), wife of Major James Woosley (b. 1811 Christian County, Kentucky d. 1897 Campbell, Hunt County, Texas).

She was the daughter of William Baley (b. abt. 1784 Virginia d. abt. 1845 Nodaway County, Missouri) and Margaret Reed Baley b. abt. 1785 Virginia d. aft. 1850).

He was the son of Nathaniel Woosley b. Bet. 1770 - 1780 Halifax County, Virginia d. abt. 1855 Crawford County, Arkansas and Sarah Keesee (b. Bet. 1770 - 1780 Pittsylvania County, Virginia d. Bef. 19 Jun 1842 Missouri). My understanding is that Nathaniel Woosley was the son of Thomas Woosley and Elizabeth Walters.

Frederick "Freddy" Knodel was a son of Otto Frederick Knodel and Carrie E. WOOSLEY Knodel and grew up in San Bernardino, CA. His parents owned a poultry ranch in the Del Rosa area of San Bernardino, at least as far back as 1948.

Mother Carrie's folks were Edward and Lucy Woosley, in Springfield, IL in 1910 and Mt. Pulaski, IL in 1920. There were three daughters, Carrie, Stella and Helen.

Father Otto Frederick Knodel, according to the census, was the son of William and Maria Leapelt. They married in Germany and came to the US shortly before 1893, settling in Chicago.

Son Frederick, who was born in 1935, died without heirs. He left a box of family photographs, which are in my possession. I'm hoping to find a Knodel related to this line who would like these photos in case there are pictures of mutual relatives involved. Please contact me at Snibbod1@aol.com if you are interested. There is no cost except for reimbursement of postage, which is nominal.

Thanks for your help. The dob of the Mary you show is very close to the approximate date of my Mary. She married Thomas Johnson and both appear in the Census of Forsyth Co, NC (formerly Stokes Co) and showed only 1 child, a son, Nathaniel, my gr grandfather. Mary appeared in the 1870 census as a widow. All I have been ablt to find is that Nathaniel's death certificate shows his parents as Thomas Johnson and Mary Woosley. Nathaniel and wife, Elizabeth Allen had 8 sons. I can't find anyone besides myself researching this family.

Omeda,
I don't have this Mary Woosley in my data base.

I have a Mary Woosley b. about 1810 daughter of Elijah Woosley and Nancy Cheshire. I don't know where they were in 1810 but they were in Bedford County TN in 1820.

In North Carolina I have the descendants of William Woosley and Susannah Tribble, three sons William Jr., Thomas, and Peter, and a daughter Elizabeth. Thomas and Peter moved to Clark Co. KY (according to my notes) and maried there; I don't record much about them but they were apparently there by 1810.

William Jr. I have md. Catherine Amburn and apparenly living in Rowan Co. NC at that time. The oldest child I have for them is William b. 1816, but there could have been an older daughter. This family is not indexed in the 1820 census at heritagequest.com.

The 1820 NC Census (at heritagequest.com) lists a "Pitman" Woosley whom I haven't related to the family living in Edgecome County with a daughter of the right age.

Hi Jim, Sarah E. Williams was born in Redruth, January 8, 1869. She came here when she was about 15 I think. I visited her grave in Bessmer, MI this past summer. She had married an Irish lad and they made their home in Wakefield, MI until Sarah died at age 39. Her husband John Connor then took the remaining 7 children to Gilbert, Minnesota. My mother was seven years old when Sarah died. I knew John Connor, my grandfather. He died in 1935. Goes to show you how old I am. Thanks again, Betty

The IGI list four Sarah Williams born in Cornwall to mothers named Ann between 1840 and 1860:

Sally b. 18 Oct 1842 in Crowan, father Edward

Sarah Jane b. 4 Nov 1844 at St. Just in Penwith, father William

Sarah Ann b. 24 Jul 1852 in Magwan in Pyder, father William

Sarah Ann b. 23 Nov 1854 in Ludgvan, father Samuel

There are two William Williams md. Anns during this period:

md. Anna ROWE on 2 March 1844 in Breage

md. Ann Nancarrow abt 1850 in PHillack.

That's all the information I can find.

Thanks Jim. I appreciate any help. I think I am probably climbing the wrong branch on this tree. I have in my records the death certificate of Ann WILLLIAMS and her father is listed as WASLEY, birthplace England. I am sure this is Cornwall. I was led to believe Ann's husband was a William WILLIAMS, but it may be James WILLIAMS. One of her daughters Sarah WILLLIAMS was my grandmother. I figured they came to Michigan when Sarah was about 15 from Cornwall. Ann was 85 was she died in 1908 in Ishpeming, MI. Betty

In a quick search, I don't find William Wasley md. Martha (last name unknown) anywhere in the International Genealogy Index for England during this time period. I'm sorry, but I can't help you on this one.

You're welcome to keep checking the IGI and other resources at www.familysearch.org; good luck with your searches.

I have been looking for information on Anna or Ann Wasley b. 1823 in Redruth, Cornwall. Died 4/30/1908 in Bessmer, MI and is buried in Ishpeming in a plot with Penberthy's. I may be looking for the wrong spelling and it may be Wosley. Anna married a William Williams, but I can't find him anywhere.
Ann is my great grandmother.
I hate to disappoint, but the only Valeria Woosley I find is b. 1866 and md. John Parsley.

I cannot find a Valeria Woosley in the 1860 or 1870 census (searching at Heiritage Quest Online) or a John Woosley in 1860 who matches this information, though it is possible that he died early.

Do you know what the A stood for? There is one Woosley listed as Anaysa S. Woosley daughter of John Woosley and Rosemon Jones that at least has an A and I don't have any other information about her at the moment. That was in Edmonson rather than Grayson, and I don't have any other John Woosleys in KY of even close to the right age to have a daughter at that time.

On the chance that the Valeria Woosley b. 1856 is a cousin or aunt of the one I have b. 1877, her parents are Bluford Woosley son of George and Phebe (Woosley) Woosley md Angeline Harrell.

I'll keep looking and if I find anything I'll let you know.

Thomas Woosley conundrum

Reference: http://brendanichols.tripod.com/deeds7a.html

Page Reports:
[Note that the following marriages are recorded in Washington Co., VA:
Hugh Cole to Mary McReynolds on 4 March 1802 by William Brundidge
Isaac Williams to Sarah McReynolds on 24 April 1788 by Thomas Woosley]

I have generally considered that all references to a Reverend Thomas Woosley in Virginia in this period are misspellings of the Rev. Thomas Woolsey who was in Virginia at that time.

This citation is however interesting because there is an elderly Isaac Woosley shown living next to John H. Williams md. Martha Woosley daughter of Samuel Woosley and Pheba Bailey in the 1840 census of Butler Co. KY.

As a point of departure for future research, is it possible that our ancestor Thomas "Moses" Woosley was a minister -- adding greatly to the confusion with the Rev. Woolsey -- and that this branch of the Williams family moved to Whitley Co. abt 1818 KY with Samuel and Pheba Woosley, and then removed to Edmonson-Butler-Grayson Col KY abt 1828? Of if not the elder Thomas "Moses," perhaps the son Thomas who eventually settled in Christian County KY.

I have no reference for this speculation, but submit it to see if anyone can add anything.

It seems he was married 3x, and when he died in 1922 was survived by 12 children:
H.F. Woosley of Ostrander, WA.; Mrs. Emily Justice, Mrs. Elizabeth Lares, Mrs. Mary Puckett, Whit Woosley, Jesse Lincoln Woosley and J.D. Logan Woosley of West Virginia; Mrs. Bean of Virginia; James B. Woosley, McKinley Woosley and Verley Woosley of White Salmon, Klickitat Co., WA., besides his widow, Mrs. B.F. (Mary Elizabeth Able) Woosley.

Obituaries for Benjamin, Mary Elizabeth, and several other members of this family can be found on my Klickitat County, WA. genealogy website. Look under Cemeteries and Obituaries, then under either Mt. Adams Cemetery or West Klickitat Cemetery District No. 1, and also in the Obituary Indexes.

I hope this helps in someone's research.

Jeff Elmer
host of http://homepages.rootsweb.com/~westklic/index.html
