My name is Scott Collin My mothers maiden name is Peggy Lawley. Her father was Floy Newton Lawley. His father was John Donald Lawley who was married to Susan Tripp. John Donalds father was John David Lawley who was married to Beatrice Bellzora Wooten. From there I am at a stand still cannot find anything on Beatrice.I am hoping you might shed some light on this for me. I am also very curious how you and I might be related. I have only one cousin who I speak with from the Lawley Clan. Hope to hear from you soon. Scott

Laura Alma Wooten was my husband's great - great grandmother. My husband's mother's maiden name is Henley. We are also trying to find information on Laura. According to my husband's grandfather, Laura was full-blooded native american...we are trying to find corroborating evidence on this.
Re: SILAS P. WOOTEN

Hello I said before that I would post as to the DNA testing. Well here it is It seems that a Keve Wooten and myself are direct decendents of Silas P Wooten, Wootton,Wooton what ever the spelling was at that time. There are 8 Different clans of Wootens and by DNA results we do not match

Welcome to the Wooten DNA Surname Project
Results

We so far have identified eight separate lines of Wootens. One of those eight belongs to the Warwick County Virginia Wootens who traveled to America in 1638. We have 6 kits that match that bloodline.

Two kits are from participants who descend from Samuel Wootten who was a native of New Jersey and settled in S. Carolina after the Revolutionary War.

One participant has traced his Wootens to the Isle of Wight, Virginia Wootens who also came to America around 1640. This is the most researched line of Wootens and some researchers claim to have traced this line back to the 1100s.

A fourth line is descended from William Wootton who was born around 1750 and died at Valley Forge during the Revolution.

Another line is descended from Robert Wootten, a free man of color who was born around 1823 in Virginia. I have been told that his mother was Avee Fulgham who was a free white female. It is my belief that Robert’s father was Dempsey Wootten who was also a free man of color.

I am in the process of collecting history on the other lines now.

Welcome to the Wooten DNA Surname Project
Project News

4/3/2009 - Today we are excited to announce that we have two matching members who descend from Silas G. Wooten. Silas G. is documented to be the son of Silas P. and Phebe Wooten in a court case that continues after Silas P. Wooten's death in which Silas G. was named as an heir. According to the age given by Silas P. on January 16, 1826 when his Revolutionary Pension is executed, he was born circa 1758-59. Silas P. died 25 Nov 1846 in Lawrence County, Kentucky. His place of birth is unknown but he did move from North Carolina to eastern Ky in the early 1800s.

6/27/2008 - We are approaching the 20 member mark. Most recently I have been working to identify the link between our members 91225 (Don)and N60036 (Kevin). Kevin's ancestor is James Wooton born 1832 in Arkansas. Some people place his birth in Illinois. Don's ancestor is William Wooten born around 1780 in North Carolina. William's grandchildren were all born in Arkansas. The oldest was Lucinda born in 1829. Coincidence? Maybe. Test results predict nearly an 80% probability that Don and Kevin are related within 12 generations.

2/5/2007 - I am designing the next mail-out. I am targeting another 400 Wootens. The last mailout generated lots of interest. So far 7 members have joined as a results of the last mail-out.

9/16/2006 - I mailed out the last of 400 letters to Wooten families in America in an effort to generate support for our project.

This was taken from my account at FamiltTreeDNA.

If there are any male Wootens out there please get tested That only test the Y DNA and any Females they test the mtDNA

Re: Daniel Wooten, b.ca. 1808 Sampson Co. NC m. Martha Crumpler?

Your message is kind of old, I was was 10 in 2001 when this post was made. I am 18 now and I live in Louisville, KY. My great great grandmother was Lucy Catherine Porter. She was born on 15 September 1850(acording to the 1850 Sampson County, NC Census she was 8/12) to Samuel Porter and Nancy Wooten in Sampson County, NC(death certificate is proof). Both parents were born in N.C. too(Lucy's death certificate is proof). Lucy Catherine Porter married John William Britt on 23 May 1871 in Wayne County, NC. Lucy Catherine Porter died in Sampson County, NC on 18 July 1936(death certificate again).

So now you know a little bit about my ancestor and how I can prove that I am a descendant of Nancy Wooten.

I would like to know if you have proof of the children for James Wooten and Elizabeth Tew of Sampson County, NC besides Daniel Wooten who married a Martha????? I believe(I have no substantial proof as of yet) that Nancy Wooten was the daughter of James Wooten and Elizabeth Tew. I base this belief on the 1850 Sampson County, NC Census. In this census, Samuel Porter is 40, Nancy (Wooten) Porter is 38, Daniel Wooten(living 2 doors down from Samuel and Nancy Porter) is 44(I believe this to be Nancy Wooten's brother b/c they are only 6 years apart), Martha(Daniel Wooten's wife) is 47, Matilda is 8(daughter of Daniel and Martha Wooten, James Wooten is 80 and Elizabeth Wooten is 82. James Wooten and Elizabeth Wooten in the 1850 Census are living right next door to Samuel Porter and Nancy Wooten.

So back to my original question, do either one of you know who the children of James Wooten and Elizabeth Tew are???

Thank you very much and I want to get the parents of Nancy Wooten right, so if you don't know, it is okay.
Lloyd Fowler
lff58@yahoo.com

Hi Frank and All You Other Wooten Family Members!

I was just wondering if you know of Wooten connections to the Edgecombe County area in NC (i.e. - Falkland, which I think was previously called California Twnshp) or if you've heard of a Benjamin Wooten b/c 1834. I do apologize in advance if I've overlooked a previous post that may have referred to this.

Many thanks,
tami

Hi Frank,

At your leisure. Just your response made me do a little jump for joy, but before I start bogging you down with details, I thought I'd start with the basics. Benjamin(spelling may vary) was married to Tinsley but could this have been his 2nd wife?
Again, at your leisure. I really appreciate any hint in the right direction.

Other area surnames: BATTLE, NEWTON, JENKINS, DIGGINS

Many thanks,
tami
fktbap@hotmail.com (here's my email address just in case it's more convenient for you)

Lot (b. 1838) & Mariah Wooten (1840-1909) who lived in Whiteville, NC were my great, great grandparents. Their daughter Annie P. Wooten (1863-1916) married Frederick Henry Shaw and later moved to Douglas, Coffee County, GA (somewhere around 1890-91). I have not run across the name Henry Thomas Wooten, but I'd like to talk to you and compare info if you want to email me at free2bgad@comcast.net

Gail

I'm interested in the fact that your family moved to Douglas which is where my branch of the family moved. Sheila's part of the family moved to Statesboro.

Gail

I did not have any known family move to Douglas. I checked through my threads to see if I had typed Douglas by mistake and could not find any such statement. I apologize for any confusion. My Wootens are from Edgecombe, as least those I can easily trace. I was told one branch left for GA. I am still investing that information. I do have Wooten relatives in GA. Some are recent migrants to the state living in Metro Atlanta others moved up from counties near Valdosta. For the latter group we are still trying to confirm the connection.

I have family born in Georgia that I can't locate, maybe you can help me. I am looking for my gg grandfather, Mathew Wooten. His son was Daniel Cisroe who was in the 1870 census with no mother or father. Do you know of either of them? Thanks, Linda Sue

My great grandfather Henry Thomas Wooten was probably born around that time. We know for a fact that he was born in Whiteville,NC. My grandfather, Daniel J. Wooten was born in Douglas, Coffee County GA were they moved when he (grandpop)was 7. From all accounts Henry wound up in Dothan, Al. in his later years.

Does any of this sound familiar?
