I'm guessing from your e-mail address that you might be Valerie?

Sorry about the e-mail confusion -- my address is mccainkw@drexel.edu (I often write the @ symbol out so that it doesn't get harvested by robots).

Thanks so much for the additional information on William Hiram Wootton and descendants. I knew about the marriage of his parents since William Sr. was my great grandfather's youngest brother, and Caroline Carter (Peggy Doughty Gray's daughter) helped update a family tree that my father had started. But I didn't really have much. I knew that the Nottingham building business had closed--I've had some mail correspondence with the Wymeswold Woottons (descendants of Joseph Wootton and Mary Ann Mills) who told me about that.

If you get in touch with me directly at the e-mail above I'll see if I can send you a scan of William Hiram's father, William Wootton, in his Boer War uniform and a scan of a letter he wrote my great grandfather from South Africa. I did manage to get most of my Wootton information up on my website a year or so ago (it needs updating) and your additions will make the next version a lot better.

Thanks for persisting.

Regards,

Kate McCain

As I don't seem able to access your e-mail address I will put the info here. Re William Hiram Wootton, if I can go back one generation William 1877-1937 who married Annie William is by family tradtion supposed to have worked his way from Wymeswold to Nottingham helping to build the brick bridges on the Nottingham-Melton Mowbray line;(which still exist and look quite complicated); by 1915 (White's Trade Directory) he was living at 18 Lammas Street in the Meadows area and also had a builders yard there; the house and yard were damaged in 1917 by bombs from the only Zeppelin raid on the city. William built up his business by building some substantial houses in the expanding suburb of West Briddgford especially in the Lady Bay area; where the family moved in the 1920's, William died in the same year as his father (William )1937 and William Hiram born 1907 took over the business, he married Dorothy in the '30's (not sure when) and they divorced 1943, whilst he was on active service (army) in UK and Europe, he remarried same year Irene and acquired two step daughters Sandra and Jennifer. As you know when WH retired the building business ceased WH like his father had done some jobbing building work but mainly they built'one off' properties. WH died 1995. He had a brother Arthur born 1908 who married Florence Monica Bougin (a family of French Huguenot descent) 12.9. 1936 and they had one daughter Valerie Monica born 1940; Arthur worked for John Player &Son(part of Imperial Tobacco Co) to which he returned after service in the RAF in India and Burma to become a senior manager, he died in 2000 and Florence in 2005. There is a sister Betsy Kathleen(Betty) born 1912; in 1938 she married Dennis Childs and had two daughters Patricia (Tricia) and Elizabeth; she after marriage, like Florence became(as women of their day did)"profressional" mothers and housewives; Betty is still alive -current address 181 Walcote Drive West Bridgford NG2 7GZ. Of your relative Samuel's siblings as you know Annie married George Price and they had two children William -married Ida and had a daughter Brenda; and Lillie -married Cyril Scott and they had a daughter Betty. His other sister Lizzie(who had very Victorian standards) married Alfred Doughty(one of the directors of John Player) and they had a daughter Margaret Audrey(Peggy) who married Noel Gray and they had two daughters Elizabeth and Caroline. So effectivly the Wootton name has died in this branch of the family-there is a want of males in the UK gene line. If you want the up to date descendants of these girls I can provide them. Of your relative Samuel and his brother Thomas who we believe also emigrated we are I am afraid to say entirely ignorant and would be grateful for any info. As you say you visited Wymeswold I assume you have the gravestone information; however should you wish to revisit or see some of your great great uncles constructions we only live 8 miles from Wymeswold and 5 from West Bridgford. I am sorry I have given you a dead end!

Hi,

I would like to acknowledge my g g g grandfather Charles Wootton (son of Phillip and Mary) b 1831, a bridle bit maker from Bloxwich, who married Matilda Lynex in 1852. Charles and Matilda, along with their children came to Australia in 1878, before all moving onto New Zealand, except for my g g grandmother Hannah who married John Springthorpe, engine driver, in Balmain, NSW in 1878.

One of the listers Jane has helped me with some information. I am happy to share my information on Charles, I even have a great photo of Charles and Matilda.

Thanks Cass from Sydney

Here in Derbyshire, my Woottons - who originally hail from the Towcester area in Northamptonshire- pronounce it as a firm, blunt WUTTUN, with the second syllable containing one of those indisctinct vowel sounds which are more of a 'uh' than anything else.
My great granddad was Frank Henry Wootton - born in the hamlet of Wood Burcote near Towcester. He married Linoura Bennett in Staveley, Derbyshire, where he worked on the railway.

Hello Si,

Have just been notified by ancestry your reply to my message. I have got back to Susannah Wootton, the mother of Thomas Priest Wootton. As you may know,Thomas was born in 1813 and he married Sarah Ingram who was also born in 1813. They had 14 children and I have the birth certificates of all but the first, Henry. I have the marriage certificates of many of the family and would be very interested to swap notes with you, fill in gaps where I can etc and maybe you have info. I need - like was Susannah married and who was here father. And I wonder where we are connected. Alfred, one of Thomas Priest Wootton's sons was my great great grandfather and the name Alfred came down to my father who was born in 1911. Please keep in touch. How do we do that by e-mail without putting it here? Regards, Thelma

Jane, one of 14 children, emigrated to Canada before moving to Buffalo, NY and had three children with husband Joseph Stinton Abbs from Stoke on Trent. Jane was my great-great aunt and I am looking for her descendants and information regarding one of her sisters, Mary Ann. I have lots of information on the Priest Wootton family from Worcestershire and Warwickshire, England, that I would gladly share.

This might help as I have found the birth record of a Frederick Wootton amongst the P pages of the registration volume as he was Priest Wootton. Hope this helps. Thelma

Hi,

I've got a bit of info on this family, mostly from Manning Valley Family History society.

I believe I'm descended via Thomas and Mary O'Donnell.

Cheers,
Michelle
