Amy, I am not positive but I believe your William Worden (1812-abt 1855) was the son of James Worden (c1787-1850) born in Harrison, Westchester, NY and married to Elizabeth ? born 1789. James was the son of Isaac Worden and Margaret Tilford. If you wish more please email me at my home address (robdonworden@comcast.net)

Robert Worden

David,

You seem to have a great deal of information on the Worden line. I am researching this surname for a friend. I can't get past his gg-grandfather, William Worden, born abt 1810 in New York. He married Weltha Farrington, and they had three children: Malissa (b. 1838), Henry O. (b. 1841) and Charles (b. 1847). They are residing in Lenox, Madison, NY in the 1850 census.

I would like to see if there is a connection to Peter Worden, but I haven't been able to make it yet.

Any help/direction you could provide would be truly appreciated!

Amy Tillman
Hi Judy!
I have not gotten any further info since I posted this. I did already know what you know however, but thanks. Flora was my great grandmother, and I have been able to trace quite a bit of her life and family. However I can find no info on the death of her first husband(my great grandfather) Louis or Lewis Worden. I can give you tons of info on Dovvie as she was my Grandma and a little on Wallace, but I don't have a lot on him. Do you need anything on Winifred? I think you can send me an email by clicking on my user name..would love to be in touch!

You must be referring to another Wait?
They sent me a copy of the birth for Sherall Waite August 6, 1756, They also indicated he died Oneida County. Florence

Thanks for your reply. I am interested in Wait Worden son of Walter Worden as there is speculation my 3rd great grandfather might be one of his children but so far no one seems to be able to find out the names of the boys he had when he lived in Coeyman, NY around 1800. I live in Ohio and am in my mid 70's and don't travel so I have no way to check this out. My cousin did a dna test which came back we were part of Peter Worden's line but do not know where in the line. Florence

Mystery of the Centenarian SOLVED!!

WORDEN MYSTERY SOLVED!
by Shae Leighland
www.Heritage-Files.com

For years, I have been attempting to solve the mystery of the centenarian. My grandfather, John Emory Worden, always claimed that a great grandfather of his was a centenarian, and that the family was from Wilkes-Barre. I quickly identified who the centenarian was (John Worden 1741-1842), but was unable to make the connection between my last known confirmed generation (John Worden the civil war soldier) and this man.

The big breakthrough was finding that James Worden (Wordin) was the father of my civil war soldier ancestor, great great grandfather John Worden (1846-1923). Confirmed on the 1850 census. Given the likelihood that James's father is John, the Centennarian, this would also fit with that my grandfather recalled of the family (that there was a centennarian; that there was family in Wilkes-Barre; etc). Another connection is that, following census data on this family, John's sister, Malinda, married Emery Tompkins. Emery would have been uncle to John Henry Worden, who named his son (my grandfather) John Emery Worden. I had always wondered about that middle name, and here is a very likely explanation for where it came from. Additionally, the area where the family appears on 1850 and 60 census matches both what I was told (family lore) and the location of the John Worden farm (that appears on the 1875 map near the Sullivan County line). John Worden (civil war soldier) also gives detailed life and residence history in his pension files, which names two siblings (Ann Eliza and William Lewis Worden) who are both confirmed children of James Worden in several sources. ON Worden's research validates that James Worden was the son of John Worden and Nelly Underhill, who was in turn the son of John The Centenarian. There is also census data to confirm much of these findings.

The next huge breakthrough was identifying the pension file of John, the civil war soldier. He served in 2nd U.S. Cav, and his pension files were 130 pages long, filled with detailed history in the form of affidavits and depositions. Among these depositions were those of siblings, Ann Eliza Smith and William Lewis Worden. We definitely have solid confirmation of the link from the soldier to his father, James Worden (also spelled Wordin). James' parentage is given in several sources, tracing back to the centenarian.

It is believed that the centenarian is the son of Thomas Worden (1716-1777) and Hopestill. Thomas Worden is believed to be a son of Amos Worden. This comes from ON Worden's files. From there, Amos is traced back through parents, Isaac Worden (1673-1718) and Rebekah; to grandparents, Samuel Worden (1646-1716) and Hopestill Holley; to great grandparents, Peter Worden (1609-1680) and Mary, the progenitors of many Worden lines in America.

ANCESTORS OF JOHN WORDEN

Generation: 1

1. John Worden b. 06 Feb 1846, Wallkill, Orange, New York, USA; d. Jan 1923, Bayonne, Hudson, New Jersey, USA.

John m. Jane Stickle 4 Jul 1869, Deerpark, Orange, New York, USA. [EVIDENCE includes mention of wife and children, with marriage and birth dates, in soldier's Pension files; pension files also include depositions from sister, Ann Eliza Worden Smith, and brother, William Lewis Worden; parents James Wordin and Harriet Moore named in Mapes Family of America and in LDS files; confirmed by census data.]

Children:
1. Harriet B Worden b. Mar 1874, New York, USA.
2. Minnie J. Worden b. Feb 1872, New York, USA.
3. Harriet Moore 25 Dec 1830, New York, USA. Harriet (daughter of William Moore and Mary Chapman Green) b. 24 Dec 1811, New York, USA; d. 1860, New York, USA. [EVIDENCE: Marriage to James Wordin and their children, as well as much of Harriet Moore's ancestry given in Mapes Family in America. Evidence for James Wordin/Worden's parentage includes Sealings for the dead, couples and children (includes some living spouses and children), 1942-1970; heir index, 1944-1972, 1942-1972: this source lists John Worden and Eleanor Underhill as parents of James Worden born about 1808. Confirmed by census data. ON Worden's book gives James Worden's parents and siblings.]

3.
Hi Andrew,
Can you provide a link to the one world tree, please? Have you traced your great great grandmother's line any further back? Our Worden line from Lancashire emigrated to America about 1637, so we have a 200-year gap. However, what I would certainly strongly suggest is that you try to find a male descendant from her father or brother or Worden uncle or grandfather, etc., to do a Y-DNA test. This could prove that you are related to our Worden family, which would be very exciting! Please visit www.worldfamilies.net/surnames/worden.
A DNA test on a direct male descendant of George Worden could determine whether he is related to the Peter Worden who came to America from Lancashire, England about 1638. Please see www.worldfamilies.net/surnames/worden or www.ftdna.com/public/worden.

Doris Wheeler, DNA Project Administrator

Dear Brenda,
I apologize. I seem to be failing at communicating here. Let me start over.

As project administrator of the Worden DNA Project, I am very interested in finding men who match our so-called Peter line but who may have remained in England. They may descend from a brother or uncle of Peter Worden. We do have matches to men in England but we have not found exactly how they are related, that is, who is their common ancestor. Do you know your George's line back to England? Do you have a male descendant who might participate in our DNA project? This man could descend from a brother or uncle or grandfather of George. No matter how distant, they would still share a common ancestor and have the same Y-DNA.

Our Peter>Robert>William all came from Lancashire.

Regards,
Doris

So are you saying the George that was born in England, who is the topic of this conversation, has been traced to Peter Worden, the immigrant to America?

What you say about eligibility for DNA testing is not quite correct. The man being tested must be a direct descendant, that is, he is genetically a Worden. Whether he was given this name at birth is not significant, but he had to be born to a male who carries the Worden DNA. (There may be an adoption or other nonpaternity event involved at some point.)

Doris

That's true, if there are male decendands of this George Worden, that were born with the Worden surname.

I don't have any male Worden cousins, but luckily, through genealogy, I can prove I am a descendant of Peter Worden, the immigrant.

Brenda Hare
Cedar Rapids, Iowa

I do know my Worden line, and yes, I do descend from Peter Worden, the immigrant:
Peter Worden + Mary
Samuel + Hopestill Holley
Peter + Holley
Peter + Rebecca Richmond
Sylvester + Rebecca Eggleston
Sylvester Jr.
Justus H. (The page one is in the first string of communications.)

The piece about William is as follows:
WILLIAM HENRY CHITTENDEN, born April 27-1822; plasterer; went with his brother, George, and a load of produce, down the river, was seized with cholera, and died at Natchez, January 9-1848, aged 26 years. He had married Catharine KEITH, who died in Indiana, August 27-1850.

My regular email is: writelinda@comcast.net

I can send you more, or this full Word Doc if you wish to write me. (Can't attach a Word Doc here!)

I do have a little more on the CHITTENDENS and WORDEN / MITCHELL families that I can share.

As far as little Josephine is concerned, I find that she did reside with the Andrew and Eliza DUNN family for a time at age 13. This was the only child in the right age-group with this name, anyway.... I did search and found another Josephine in Indiana, but she was recorded as 18 yrs old.

I took a quick look around Ancestry and the only Andrew and Eliza (in INDIANA) that were married were married in 1831. That was too long ago for these two. Andrew was born approx 1825, so that's not quite possible. The only other census I found was: Kansas > Miami > Paola, pg. 114 A & B and pg. 115 (Military Records). No luck in this avenue - yet anyway! :D

John Wesley CHITTENDEN, is also a child of John and Mary's
(also taken from the 50th Anniversary notice):
JOHN WESLEY CHITTENDEN, farmer, born November 7-1824, in Kentucky; married July 16-1846, to Mary Catharine COLE, born in Hamilton County, Ohio, April 10-1830, daughter of Adam and Elizabeth COLE. Bennington, Indiana.

Let me know if you want more.

Thanks!
Linda
I have William Henry Chittenden married to Catherine Keith with tree children; Mary A, Josephine, and William Lyman. The 1850 census shows Catherine living next to her in-laws with all three children (William Henry has died). In 1860, Mary A and William Lyman are with the grandparents (Catherine has died). Your posting gives William Henry's death as 9 Jan 1848. Ancestry shows William Lyman's birth as 2 Jun 1849. Do you know if this the correct birth date for Willam Lyman or is he not the son of William Henry? Also, is the Josephine Chittenden living with the Andrew Dunn family in the 1860 census the same Josephine?

I would appreciate any information you would share with me regarding this family. Mary A married Henry Logan Trisler and was my husband's GG grandmother. Also, I was contacted by a descedent of William Lyman and I told her I would pass on what learned.

One more quick question, Ancesrty.com lists John Wesley b. 7 Nov 1824 in Kentucky as a child of John Hany and Mary Atlanta, do you know if this is correct?

Thanks again,
Pat Trisler

Hi Trish,

I don't know whether you'll ever get this message, but my great-grandmother's name was Alice, and her maiden name was Worden. I'm not sure what her date and place of birth were, but she married a man named Wallwork, and gave birth in Chorley to four children: Marjorie (b. 1917), Thomas (1918), Kathleen (1921) and Nancy (1928). Perhaps she's the Alice mentioned in your census?

William H. Worden Sr.

Can anyone tell me who William Henry Worden's parents were and where they were from? All I know is the following:

William Henry Worden Sr. was born in Iowa on July 20, 1852. His father died when he was a boy and his mother remarried a man named George Freeze. They traveled to Walla Walla, WA in 1863 by wagon train when William was just 11 years old. The family lived in Walla Walla where William’s step father was a brick layer and helped build several buildings. William later worked as a cattle herder and later homesteaded in Touchet, WA.

William married Martha J. Smith (born March 18, 1873), whose family lived on property next to William’s, on August 24, 1890. Martha Worden died September 25, 1916. William Henry Worden Sr. died in 1946 at the age of 94.
I Have the death certificates for Nelson, Mary, and Elizabeth, They all have George Worden as being born in England. The certiftcate for Mary was filled out by Nelson.
In the 1870 and 1880 census he is also listed as being born in England. I have not been able to find out when He came over but if he was born 1827 and his first child was born in march of 1851 that gives you about 23 years to look at.

Hi
Just jumped into looking at the Wordens.
My Fathers great grandmother was Cecily Worden, from Walton le Dale.
She was born in Leyland and her father was William Worden. She married William Hubberstey.
Her father was an inn keeper /farmer (which most Inns where also farms in those days)
Have a look at the Hubberstey One World tree to see Cecily. She was born in the late 1820's
Let me know if you have a tree to link to if we have a common ancester.

Thanks
Andrew

Andrew, my Worden ancestors left Lancashire in about 1636 with one possible branch remaining. It is likely that we are distantly related through this line. Can you get back to the 1600s yet?

Robert Worden
