I have seven brothers and sister Anne, Ellen, Mary & Maureen and Tony, Raymond & me the youngest son.
The generic Wraxall tree you have sounds fantastic.
Email is barneythebookie@tiscali.co.uk
Cheers
pete

Pete,

If you are who I think you are your dad Walter had two brothers Sydney and Anthony and your Grandad was also a Walter Wraxall and Grandma Mary Wraxall (nee Kennedy).

If this is so were you one of possibly five kids with two brothers Anthony and Raymond and sisters Maureen and perhaps an Ellen?

If I am correct please let me know. Perhaps we can correspond by Email or I can Phone you. I don't think it is a good idea to display you entire family tree details here for all to see especially all the one that are still living.

I have your entire gentic Wraxall tree going back a very very long way.

What I am missing is details about the younger Wraxalls in your family. I have one of your brothers having two sons and sister having one son (I know their names and dates of birth, but will not disclose them here).
I did not know about your children.

You have a vast number of cousins from various generations most living in the Manchester Area. I can tell you about them too.

Keith.

Re: HELLO

Sir Nathaniel Wraxall 1st Bt. only had had two sisters and no brothers.

One sister was called Rebecca Wraxall, she died in 1786 she married a Captain James Robertson.

The other sister was Catherine Wraxall of whom little is known, she is mentioned as a beneficiary in the will of the baronet's father.

The Baronet's wife Jane Lascelles b1751 d1831 was married in 1789. She was a daughter of Peter Lascelles Esq. of Knights House in the county of Hertfordshire.

Jane Lascelles' will is in the National Archives. Unfortunately she does not mention in her will any siblings. The only beneficiaries are her two sons, her eldest grandson (who became the 3rd Baronet), her servant and St. James' Church in Dover where she and her husband are buried.

This is the sole extent to which I can help you. I am not aware of any other records that can help.

The 'Lascelles' name is the family name of the Earls of Harewood and their descendants. The first Earl of Harewood was created in 1812, 61 years after Jane Lascelles was born. So it is not surprising that I have been unable to find in reference books such as early editions of Burkes Peerage any reference to a Peter Lascelles of Knights House Herts. within the lineage of the Earls of Harewood. Peter Lascelles was a gentleman of property and coupled with that name, I believe him to be a descendent of a much earlier branch of the Lascelles family which goes all the way back to John de Lascelles of Hinderskelfe, Yorkshire who was known to be living in 1315 who married a lady called Joanna.

Hi there,

Can anyone help me with the first baronet and his family? My 3G Granny, Anne Lascelles, is listed in her husband's obituary in the British Medical Journal as the niece of the first Baronet, Sir Nathaniel William Wraxall. I need to find out about his siblings and his wife's (Jane Lascelles), family.

Any help gratefully rec'd

Hello again Wally,

I have just read this earlier post, after I replied to your later post saying your father had died.

This post gives me some of the information I asked for and confirms what I suspected, that you are what I call a "True Canadian Wraxall".

Unfortunately for my research quite a few Wraxalls from another line from Manchester (who I call Manchester Wraxalls) also decided to live in Canada, which makes my work a bit harder!

Your grandmother was born Charlotte Adam Laing b1911 and died in 1997. Your grandfather was John Wraxall b1904 d1960.

Your grandfather was a first cousin to my grandfather Sir Charles Wraxall 7th Bt.

So we are cousins too!

I believe your grandfather had a sister Annie Lillian Honerine Wraxall b1906 is this correct?

I don't have much information on the younger Canadian generations such as yourself so your help would be much appreciated.

When was your father born? What about (your) aunt(s) & uncle(s) and all your and their descendents?

If you don’t want to post their details here for security (as anybody can see it), we should correspond by E-mail and I can always phone you.

I can tell you all about your ancestors.

I believe my first cousin Sylvia Wraxall (daughter of Sir Morville Wraxall 8th Bt.) stayed with some of your Canadian relatives in the 1970's.

Look forward to hearing from you.

Keith Philip Wraxall Hunter.
(Grandson of Sir Charles Wraxall 7th Bt.)

Sorry for the delay I have only just read this board today in August!

Sir Charles Wraxall 7th Bt. was my grandfather, his son Morville who became Sir Morville Wraxall 8th Bt. was my Uncle (and godfather). Charles Wraxall's daughter is Gwendolyn (Gwen) who is my mother and is still very much alive (81 years old) and lives near Croydon in Surrey.

She married my father in Oct 1945 in Alexandria and returned to his native Scotland in early 1946, subsequently they moved to England in 1954. Sir Charles, his wife Marceline (my grandmother who was French) and Morville left Egypt and came and joined my parents in 1946.

Who is the gentleman in the day care centre? Perhaps I can get in touch with him somehow?

If you send me an Email Address I can send you a photo of them taken in 1945,so he would instantly recognise them.

Hi, My father was named Albert Morville Wraxall, married to Margaret Redfern. He had two sisters and a brother William. Two of his cousins were named Thomas And Walter Wraxall. It seems as though the existing Wraxalls can be traced back to one of these four great men.

Hi I am posting this today in hopes you may be able to help me. Today I had a rather interesting conversation with a gentleman in a day centre I work at. He is wondering about a family he met in Egypt during the 2nd world war, namely Sir Charles Wraxall, the family were living in Alexandria. Sir Charles had a son Morville and a daughter Guendaline Lassels (please excuse my spelling). Any information anyone has would be most appreciated.

Jo,

Whilst phoning random Wraxalls in the Canadian Telephone directory, I think I may have talked to your brother Ian?

This was most confusing to me as I was tracing Canadian Wraxalls descended from a brother of the 6th Baronet.

Instead I found someone who I believe to be your brother, who is what I call a Manchester Wraxall living in the wrong part of the world!

Last time you responded to my posted message you were abroad and left your Email address. Is it o.k. for me to contact you using that, to discuss what you know of your family as I have now decided I need to try to make a tree for descendents of Mary Ellen who was your grandfather Morville Wraxall's (b1884) mother.

Any help from you and Debbie (who is your second cousin, her grandmother Emily being a sister of your grandfather Morville) would be much appreciated.
I am intrigued by your posting regarding a “Morville Wraxall” that you seem to have found in the 1901 census. I am aware of four different Morville Wraxall’s but from the information you have provided these four are all different to your Morville Wraxall (all of whom were either not alive then or living in another country). However, as this name repeats itself within my family going back many generations I wonder if there still could be a connection.

I should explain I am a grandson of Sir Charles Wraxall 7th Baronet, my uncle and godfather Morville Wraxall was the 8th Bt. and my cousin Charles is the current and 9th Bt., I do appear in Burkes Peerage and Baronetage buried in the detail of the Wraxall family as a rather insignificant descendent. The family is not wealthy, quite the contrary the history of the family includes periods of great poverty and hardship as well as scandals. The family was at its most wealthy in the early 1700’s. I have been conducting research as I am writing a book on the history of the Wraxall’s and their ancestors.

I have a complete family tree of the Wraxall’s going back with certainty to the grandfather of the first Baronet b1687 along with all his siblings and their descendents. I also have a probable but unconfirmed tree going further back to someone who died in 1633.

Incidentally, I also have a tree of the ancestors of the first baronet’s mother Anne Thornhill which goes back to William the Conqueror through multiple paths.

For genuine relatives of the baronet family or their ancestors, there are very few legitimate paths that remain unexplored and unaccounted for.

In the mid 1600’s the Somerset Wraxall’s were seaman and ship masters (Captains) and they sailed regularly to Virginia, USA. Some settled there and American and Canadian Wraxall’s are probably descended from this line. I have yet to decide whether to try to research and document this American line. However, to clarify some mistaken postings I have read from our American cousins posted on various websites, I would just like to state that the famous American Peter Wraxall b ~1720 who d1759 in New York, was in fact a nephew of the paternal grandfather of the first baronet and was therefore an English Bristol, Wraxall and not an American Wraxall, and he had no children, so they are not his descendents.

There are some Wraxall’s in Ireland; descendents of Somerset Wraxall’s from no later than the early 1600’s probably even earlier. I do not intend to research this, it is too far back to research and they are not my genetic ancestors anyway, we just possibly share some genes from common ancient ancestors.

All legitimate Wraxall’s from our family back to 1687 are accounted for except issue from two younger sons of Sir Morville William Nathaniel Wraxall 5th Bt. b1834 d1898. He was born in India, returned with his father to England by 1840, returned to India as a soldier as a young man, returned to England by 1870, emigrated to Australia by 1875 and died in Australia in 1898. His two youngest sons, born in 1868 and1869 remained in England as very small children and may have grown up to have children. (I do know their names, but won’t show them here, to help me identify serious claimants as to possible descendents). I am keen to trace any ancestors of these two children, but for reasons I don’t wish to disclose here there may very well be none.

Another possibility is illegitimate Wraxall’s. One Wraxall Baronet (I will not say which one here) at one time kept a public house in Manchester (a scandalous occupation for a gentleman in Victorian times). He was married but had no legitimate heir, but might given his character, have had illegitimate offspring that may have had his name put on their birth certificate. I am keen to explore this purely speculative possibility.

If anybody has some dates of birth, marriage or death to back up their Wraxall names, particularly in the period from 1850 to 1910 I would be glad to review them and if they are possibilities I shall gladly correspond and share information.
Deborah Platt,

Before I can help I need more information. Even if you don't know exact dates of birth, marriage and death you say you found some of these relatives in the 1901 census. This would say how old they were and what profession they had at the time the census was done and from that, I can work out which year they were born +/- a year.

In need to know how old each relative you found was in 1901 only then can I relate them to possible ancestors.

What I can say now to you Dee and to you Jo (who also replied, I presume you are cousins of some sort given the names you have both posted) is that the names of your ancestors are sometimes similar but not exactly the same as known legitimate relatives with the exception of Morville William Nathaniel Wraxall which matches the name of the 5th Baronet. However, claimed legally married wife names of his are incorrect.

A connection with the Western Temperance League also agrees with the 5th Baronet.

Some of these children of this Morville William Nathaniel Wraxall (are you sure he really had all these names or are you assuming that just because he was a Morville Wraxall or a Morville William Wraxall he was Morville William Nathaniel Wraxall) you have mentioned have such similar names to the legitimate children of the 5th Bt. which are undisputed, that I suspect possible illegitimate descendents. It would not be out of character; he did this much later in his life and named a son from his last relationship with Christian names that were almost the same as his first born legitimate son who became the 6th Baronet, my great grandfather.

Before I can do more I need to know ages at a particular time from a census as a minimum. I can then check them against known locations of relatives, (most of whom were officers in the army at some points in their lives and served abroad and in many cases were born abroad), to establish if it was possible for them to be a biological (if not legitimate) ancestor.

It is still a possibility that your Morville Wraxall was a son of one of the missing younger boys I mentioned in my first post, but the location and dates (based on my guess of generations from your postings) on the surface seem to make this improbable.

Also known historical links to Manchester (where I assume these relatives you mention were based) come from another Baronet not the 5th.

The title “Lady” is given to the legitimate wife of a baronet and after her husband’s death she is known as “Dowager Lady “. I am sorry to tell you but there has never been a Lady Mary E. Wraxall or a plain Lady Mary Wraxall. There has been one Lady Mary Anne Wraxall by another baronet, but they had no children and their lack of children is undisputable because as there was no heir the title passed to his brother upon his death.

This does not preclude the possibility of a common law wife calling herself Lady Wraxall, even if legally she was not.

As I said, I need ages to ascertain what is possible and what is not, and then this information needs to be confirmed by looking at census records from other earlier years to establish a traceable line that matches the known whereabouts of various baronets and their professions at that time to establish a plausible link.

There are other Wraxall lines from Wiltshire and Dorset that are not related to the Baronet family, but probably share common ancestors from a minimum of 400 year ago. Most unmatched Wraxalls I have found are descended from these. But the co-incidence of repeated names particularly of children still arouse my suspicion of some kind of connection even if it is illegitimate.
Hi Jo thanks for taking the time out to read and reply ! I didn't think anyone would reply for months (if ever !) its spooky because I was born in benchill wythenshawe and moved to gorton (aged about 12) and now reside in (sunny) clayton !! I have not heard the story of the lady running off before ! I have the Wraxall coat of arms hung on my office wall ! I got it from burkes peerage also I got a burkes peerage book of the wraxall family and it list our clan and it seems they have spread far and wide ! but apart from that and this message board I have massive gaps in the Wraxall history so hopefully our clan can all chip in with information and we will all have a better picture
Cheers Jo

Pete
