My husband is a descendant of Henry Crook Wren thru his son, James Franklin. I recently received some pictures of James Franklin's siblings and his children. Some pictures are identified and some aren't. Anyone familiar with photos of this family and can help identify these pictures please contact me.

Thanks
Twylla

Thomas and James Wren who are they?

In trying to sort out the Wren’s of Fairfax, Col. James and Co. Thomas are giving me problems.

From the records in Fairfax and Loundon Counties we find the following people:

Col Thomas Wren b.1703 d.1768 mar. Jean or Jane ????? Lancaster County

Ch. Nicholas b.1831 d.1809 mar. Elizabeth Jenkins

William Carter b.1735 d.1817 mar Mary Tomlinson

John b. 1737 d.1815 mar.Elizabeth

Traverse(Travis) b.1739

Isaac b.1741 d. 1773

Winfred b.1730 d.? mar. John Ethel(Athill)

Ann(Betty) b.1739 d.after 1768 mar. John Talbert

Mary b.? d. after 1768

Col. James Wren b.1728 d. 1815 mar. Catherine Brent

Ch. Catherine b. 1760 d. 1835 Simon Adams

Elizabeth b. 1746 d. 1800

Hannah b.1759 d. 1823

John b.?? d.1815

James Nicholas b.1758 d.1820 mar. Elizabeth Gunnell

John S. b.1766 d. 1821 mar. Sarah s, Hite

Sarah b.1768 d. 1832 mar. Nathaniel Talbott

Mary b. 1814 d. 1814

Now in adjacent Loudon County we find in deed records

James Wren witness deed in 1773. This would make hin only 15yre. old. Too young to wit. A deed

Thomas of Fairfax leased 200 ac. 1774. Col. Thomas died in 1768, with no son Thomas.

Isaac witness deed in Loudon in 1776, but we think he died in 1773.

A Thomas and Susanna Wren of Loudon leased 188 ac. In 1778. WHO ARE THEY

John and Hannah purchased 61 ac. in Loudon in 1790 WHO ARE THEY

John and Thomas are listed as merchants in 1794 WHO ARE THEY

I wonder if your Thomas Wright is related to the Wrights I am researching. I am stuck at present with Joshua wright marrying Mary Byham at Holy Trinity Church Bengeo 25 Oct 1802.Their first born child born 1803 (in Bengeo), Joshua, is the branch I am following.
Do you have any further information about your Thomas Wright?

Murraysusan1
Hello Dan,

Not that this means anything regarding Your Shadrack Wren, I am a descendant of Shadrack Hargis; also of Person. The given name is not restricted to any one particular family. My Shadrack's father was Abraham. Abraham was born in Charles County, Maryland on 7 January 1707, and married there in 1739. The family moved to Prince George County, Maryland, and then he and his family immigrated to Fairfax County, Virginia where they lived on a 161 acres farm near South Branch of Pohic Run. Abraham had purchased the farm on 17 December 1764 and was to pay 60 pounds for it. When he failed to do so, a decree was issued on 16 October 1770, and the land was seized and sold.

The family then moved to Tryon County, North Carolina where Abraham purchsed land from the CROWN on 24 December 1771. "200 acres in Tryon on the N. side of Broad river - including an Island opposite thereto, joining the mouth and side of Dolittle Creek, the side of the sd. river, and Capshaws Line."

About 1775 the family moved again to Caswell County, North Carolina in the part that later became Person County.

I had to mention the above because of the proximity of Tryon to Rutherford.

John Fox
Winston Salem, NC

Warren Co. Kentucky ( I had forgotten there is a NC county of that name). Thanks for the advice on "Patsy" and "Polly". From what records I have seen, it is difficult to tell which belonged to Shadrach and Elizabeth but I believe it was Mary, a/k/a Polly.

I have not looked in Guilford, Person, or Caswell counties because Shadrach and Elizabeth and Sarah Wren are in the 1790 census of Rutherford Co. Also, in Rutherford County, I have seen court records ordering Sarah's children to be cared for by others and attributing this to the death of James Wren, leaving Sarah Wren a widow---the children of James and Sarah in the court records are Frances, Joseph, and Mary. James and Sarah appear to have traveled to Rutherford County from Northampton Co NC because of lands bought in 1754 and sold in 1775 before James is on the Rutherford Co. NC tax roll in 1777. James Wren appears to have died between 1780 and 1783 when the widow Sarah goes to court.

I will see if there is any connection to Person,Guilford, or Caswell counties.

Many thanks, Dan dwren@ou.edu

I am researching Wrens/Rens/Renns/Wrenns from Person County, NC who have ties to some of the Wrens of Guilford County, NC

The Wrens of Person include James Wren who married Mary Hamlin ca 1800; James and his wife seemed to have been born in VA, but cannot find the exact location. James had a brother, William who began in what was Caswell County, but Person was set of from Caswell shortly thereafter. William had lots of descendants in Guilford.

John Fox
Winston Salem, NC

Shadrack Elizabeth Wren

I would like to connect with someone having information on Shadrack Wren born 1750 in Rutherford, NC. and died in Boone County, MO. He married Elizabeth Reynolds in 1789/90 in NC. She was born 1768 in SC. Their known children were: James; Joseph; Berryman; George; Charles Edward; David; Polly; Hyman; Priscilla; and Martha.

Hope someone knows these people.

Josiah Wilson WREN[N], who is likely a descendant of immigrant Francis WREN, had a daughter Sarah who married John BARLOW in 1795 -- perhaps in Isle of Wight Co., VA. Seeing a WREN (Bates) and a BARLOW (Nancy) show up close to Isle of Wight Co. in what is now Greensville Co. suggests that Bates descends from Francis. I have yet to see a descendant of immigrant Nicholas WREN in this part of Virginia.

Mary Richardson
mrichson@ix.netcom.com

Based on her location, I'm confident that your Elizabeth WREN GRAVATT descends from immigrant Nicholas WREN of Lancaster Co., VA.

Charles FAGG and Judith GRAVATT had a daughter Catherine "Caty" who married Wm WREN in 1807 Spotsylvania Co., VA. William was b. ~1782, so Elizabeth WREN GRAVATT was at least a generation ahead of him. There was a Betty WREN, b. ~1735 to John and Hannah WREN in King George Co., VA. I know nothing further about her, but she could be your Elizabeth.

Betty's brother William m. Mary STROTHER in 1747 King George Co., VA. We've only found three sons and a possible daughter for them. There could be other children -- perhaps your Elizabeth? (Wm WREN and Mary STROTHER's grandson was the Wm WREN who married Caty FAGG.)

Mary Richardson
mrichson@ix.netcom.com

Re: Jefferson GA Wren Family - John 1786

I have not found a connection between my branch of the Wren family and the branch for which Wrens, Georgia was named. Of course, that doesn’t mean that there wasn’t one.

In the early 1800s, one of my Wren ancestors did live in Georgia in a county close to Jefferson County where Wrens is located. My 3g-grandfather was Bates Wrenn (Sr.), born 1760 in Brunswick County, Virginia (in the part that was later made into Greensville County, Virginia). He served during the Revolutionary War from Virginia and stated in his pension application that after he was discharged in 1781, he continued to reside in Virginia for about 12 years, then resided in Halifax County, North Carolina for about 8 years, then resided in Columbia County, Georgia for about 8 years, and finally moved to Edgefield District, South Carolina where he lived until his death in 1843.

Bates’ parents were James Wrenn & Elizabeth (?).
Bates’ siblings were Henry, James, Jones, Martha, Elizabeth, and Mary.
Bates married Nancy Barlow (1787 VA) and they had Nancy (b. c. 1790 VA).
Bates then married Clarissa Jones (1792 VA) and they had William, Bates Jr, Allen, Mack, Sarah, Silvesta, Andrew Jackson, and Elizabeth (all between 1796 VA and 1816 SC). Elizabeth married Joshua Harris (c. 1828 SC), and they were my great-great grandparents.

If any of these seem to make a connection, please let me know and I’ll furnish any additional information that I may have concerning them.

Hope to hear from you soon.

Wren

J. Wren Harris, Jr.
Columbus, GA
The following is my branch of this family. I want to add it to this thread.

My gggg-grandparents were James Wren and Elizabeth (?) Wren.

My ggg-grandparents were Bates Wren, Sr. and Clarissa (Jones) Wren.

My gg-grandparents were Joshua Harris (c1788 SC – after 1870 SC) and Elizabeth (Wren) Harris (c1807 SC – c1879 SC). Joshua’s children by a previous marriage were Aramenta, Amanda F., and Mary. Joshua and Elizabeth’s children were Sarah Zeline, John B., Martha Sylvesta, Jennie C., Frances V., an unknown child, and Joshua Wren Harris.

My g-grandparents were Joshua Wren Harris (1848 SC – 1910 GA) and Martha Frances (Schenk) Harris (1850 SC – 1912 GA). Their children were Yancey Agnew, John S., Calbraith Butler, Frances Elizabeth, and Willie A.

My grandparents were Calbraith Butler Harris and Evie (Sumner) Harris.

My father was Joshua Wren Harris, Sr. and my mother is still living.

My name is Joshua Wren Harris, Jr. Besides my direct line, many of my cousins have Wren as their first or middle names – both males and females.

And that is my branch of the family, and I’m always ready to share any information that I might have.

Is there still a Wren family reunion? If so, when is it held and where, and who is a contact?

Wren

J. Wren Harris, Jr.
Columbus, GA
If anyone would like a copy, I took a picture today of the tombstone of Jeremiah Alonzo Wren, b. Nov 1832, York Co, South Carolina; d. Aft. 1913, Tishomingo Co, Mississippi

and his wife's tombstone:

MARTHA R. FARRIS; b. Nov 21, 1831, Chester Co, South Carolina; d. Oct 06, 1903. I found their names in the previous post, and thought someone would really enjoy seeing the tombstones. They are buried at Bethany Presbyterian Cemetery in Tishomingo County, Mississippi. Most of the people here were related, and I thought it odd to see Mr. Wren from South Carolina there, so I took the pictures.

Hello Wren,
Is your family connected to the Wren family in Jefferson County GA for which Wrens, GA is named?

My wife, Wren, descends from the VA line of Nicholas Wren of Lancaster Co., VA...thru William Carter Wren (b.1782) of Fluvanna Co., VA...to Charles Carter Wren (b.1811) of Bedford Co., VA.

When we moved to Georgia I became interested in the Wrens of Jefferson Co., GA but have not linked them with documentation to any VA Wrens. Can you help?

Below is what I have from a Presbyterian graveyard in Wrens, GA and other sources.
Best wishes,
Vince Howard

Gravestone Found at Wrens, GA
A. A station in the part of Jefferson County
was given the name of Wrens. In a published book by the late Dr. W. L.
Kilpatrick covering the period of 100 years from 1794 to 1894. He stated
"The town was named for John Wren, a worthy and venerable man, a member of
Ways Baptist Church" who was born Dec. 18, 1798 died Oct. 24 1869 and is
buried in the Wren family cemetery at Wrens ARP Presbyterian Church. John
Wren owned the land that comprises the town of Wrens and surrounding area,
having obtained this part of it from the Indians for two horses. This fact
is verified by Robert Ripley's book "Believe It or NOt".

With the coming of the railroad people moved nearer the station, and in
1884 the first public building was erected, a school was built on the lot
where the Baptixt Church Annex now stands. At that time, the late W. J.
Wren, a nephew of John Wren built a home and a general merchandise store,
and promoted the development of the town by giving building lots to school,
churches and worthy citizens.

In March 1901, the town received its charter.

A William Wren was living in Jefferson Co. and left 2 orphans, James and
Mary, guardian Nathaniel Holton, Daniel Kennedy sur., 9/2/1833.

Betty Wren
