Gerri,
My new email address is: schang007@sbcglobal.net.

I recently visited Southern Missouri and attended two family reunions: Dilbeck (Pat and Edith Writer Dilbeck) family in Cassville and the Writer (offspring of Harold(Shorty)and Capitola (Potter) family in Green Forest, Arkansas. I also did research in the Archives in Kansas City, Independence, and Columbia, Missouri with little luck.

I came home with a few more clues to research but have not done so yet. One was that the first Writer who immigrated from Ireland really died at sea and our great grandfather (first name unknown - P.A. or Clark?)orphaned and grew up in Canada where he married Percilla Ann who was Canadian.

In one of the census records I have for James A. McMillan and Esther (Writer) in Arkansas - she says her father was born in Dublin, Ireland and her mother was born in Canada.
I have to look back in my data base for the year and county in Arkansas.

Another cousin remembers Charles Marion saying he could see Pikes Peak from his window when he was a child. (I haven't researched in Colorado yet, have you?

I am extremely busy right now with family issues but will let you know when I find more results.

Keep in touch.
Shirley Writer Chang

I have some information on Elanor M. Writer who married Lucius W. Mithcell. Elanor/Elner was my great aunt. Her brother, Frank, was my grandfather. I don't have any information on her husband or children. She was born 15 Feb. 1854 in PA to Benjamin Newkirk and Anne E. (Eliza) Waldron/Walton. ( I have their pictures.)She married in Effingham, IL to Luke Mitchell on 20 May, 1874, signed my H.M. Campbell,M.G., Book B, page 96. I also have a list of her siblings and families. If you have other info on her husband or children, please let me know. I would also like to know where her parents are buried.
Kay Wofford
garrywofford@hughes.net

The stories I've read state that Jasper and a sister came over together and the sister died on the voyage. I had never heard about being an orphan. However, if the ship he sailed on was known the manifest might list the village of orgin. Once you have that research in Germany is fairly easy as they kept unbelievable records.

Do you know any more about Theodore Writer who went to Passaic County, NJ.? About when he went there? How old he was when he went. Passaic County is where my Rose family lived. It'd be fascinating to find that Theodore Writer, or one of his sons, is the one who married Alpharetta Rose.

Hello,

Jasper Writer went to Mercer County, NJ. Isaac S. Rundle, the son of Anna Writer went to Sussex County. George S. Writer was in Flatbrookville, NJ but I don't know the county. Sanford P. Writer was in Sussex County and Theodore Writer was in Passaic County. All these descend from the same common ancestors Jasper Writer and Eve Kortright. Some of the family names are Rundle, Shay, Van Tuyle and McKeeby.

Do you know where in New Jersey your Writers moved to? Most of my Rose family left Orange County and Sullivan County, NY after the D&H Canal closed and settled in Passaic County and Bergen County, NJ to work on the Morris Canal. I don't know if Alphretta Rose married Mr. Writer in Orange County before they moved, or in Passaic County after they moved.

In an obituary for her brother, Albert Rose who died in 1970, she is called Mrs. Retta Writer of Midland Park, New Jersey.

"Writer"--Slovak trans. to Pesaric/Pisarcik

The "Writer"s I'm looking for are a bit different--they were originally from Czech/Slovak/? and that is what theri name means in english. Some of them changed their names when they got to the USA. I am particularly interested in a Paul Writer of PA (possibly Vandergrift) who would have been my ggrandfather's (Jacob Pesaric/Pesarcik(originally))brother. I know they also had a brother Andrew who lived in PA and was a steel mill manager. And another brother Carl who we believe moved to California. Any connections or info would be appreciated.

That's an interesting story. I've been researching family history for 30 years and you're the first one researching this family that has mentioned this story. But it certainly bears checking into. Do you have sources for this story that could be checked? I do know Jasper lived to be over 100 and served in the Revolutionary War. I also know the name was spelt Reiter in Germany. I've no idea when he first came to America, but the are many verified stories about him. Some of them are in the Orange County history books. Dr. Theodore Writer, his great-grandson, wrote he immigrated to America about 1760 and he was married in 1772. The story states that between 1760 and 1770 he was living in Little Britian, Phillipsburg, New York. It mentioned nothing that I noted about what he did those 10 years. I will have to check again.

Margaret Writer 1774 New York

I am descended from Margaret Writer born March 1774 in Orange County, New York. She married Ziba Rundle (Randle) and the family moved to Ohio. Her parents were Jaspar (Caspar) Writer (Reiter) from Germany and Eve Kortright from New York. Anyone else out there researching this family?

name variations

Another possibility is that the name had been changed from Rider to Wrider. I just communicated with someone who found one of our missing Riders in KS had changed his name to Wrider. Thoughts, comments?

Jasper married Eve Kortright whose family held land grants in NY. Eve's cousin married President Monroe. Her father was a tavern owner in NYC and lost everything during the battle of Harlem. Jasper and Eve came in possession of some of the family lands and that is where all of the Writer farms are located today.

I cannot verify the story of Jasper, only that it was handed down from my Grandmother. Jasper is buried in Mt Hope, NY in the same cemetery as my grandmother and many other ancestors.
