Thanks for the information. I've been in contact with Alex Wyatt, compared DNA, and it appears we are not related.

Do you know of an up to date conversion chart for comparing DNA results from different companies? My test results are from SMGF, with testing completed in the last 2 months. If I go by their conversion chart, which relates everything back to the NIST standards, the results are equivalent to FTDNA results except for markers 441 and 442. If I follow the conversion instructions on Ysearch.org I get a completely different set of numbers. They can't both be right, so I'm wondering which I should use. As an experiment I put both into Ysearch and compared myself, I have a genetic distanc of 13 between my two results. Since I'm apparenly not even related to myself, I think I need to do the testing with FTDNA to see what values I get.

Shane
Thanks Shane.

Since you said that you can trace your line to Sir Thomas through Haute Wyatt I assumed that you had some type of documentation.

I tested with both FTDNA and SMGF and I have also loaded my results with Ancestry and Ysearch.

Here is some info for you and others :
For those of you who have participated with any Y-DNA analysis company, you can manually load your Y-DNA data to Ysearch.org.

For those of you who have participated in the Family Tree DNA test, you can automatically upload your Family Tree DNA data to Ysearch.

Ysearch is a division of FTDNA and is a free service. You can compare DNA results to anyone else in the database but it does not calculate generational distance & probabilities.

Here is their web site : www.ysearch.org

There is a monkey-wrench for many of us.

I don’t mean to be a skunk at the party, and Dr Steven Perkins can correct me if I am wrong, most of the Wiatts/Wyatts who have tested have a haplogroup of R1___
and some have the haplogroup of I1.
Wiatts/Wyatts in group R1 are not related (within 10000 years + ) to those in I1; at least not through their male line.

What this means is that men in Group in R1 and those in I1 can NOT be both descended from Hawte. I suppose that it is possible that men in neither group are descended from Hawte.

There are three Wiatt/Wyatt clans who have tested with FTDNA that have been matched with each other in a I1 sub-group.

What makes their group unique is that each family has
documentation that puts their male line in Gloucester County, Va in the 18th century. Each family claims a different son of Conquest as who they are descended from.
The family that claims that they are from Francis (b. ca 1670) has very, very good documentation.

Other than these three families, I know of no other
Wiatt/Wyatt family in the world that can place (with documentation) their ancestors in Gloucester County in the18th century or earlier.

Of course these facts do not prove that these 'I1' families are descended from Hawte but I know of no Wyatts in the R1 group that has similar documentation.

That is what I think I know.

FYI in case anyone is interested - Alex Wiatt is publishing an updated edition of his 1980 book "the Wiatt Family of Virginia" soon.

Best wishes,

W W
My haplotype is R1b1b2, I'm told it used to be called R1b3.  I had my DNA tested by the Sorenson Molecular Genealogy Foundation, which reports some markers differently than Ancestry.com.  I converted them according to Ancestry.com's guidelines and entered them manually.  I wouldn't say I trace my line to Haute Wyatt with little doubt.  This is how I believe it goes;

Haute Wyatt b. 1594 England
Edward b. 1619 England
Conquest b. 1615 Virginia
James b. 1674 Virginia
James b. 1710 Virginia
William b. 1730 Virginia
George b. 1764 South Carolina
George b. 1810 Kentucky
*Charles Crittenden b. 1841 Kentucky
Jesse Oran b. 1884 Missouri
Oran Newton b. 1909 Colorado
Jesse Allen b. 1940 Colorado
Shane Allen b. 1968 Wyoming

The Charles Crittenden Wyatt marked with a * is the question mark. I know my descent from Charles is correct, and the descent from Haute to Charles was documented in a book called "On Down the Line". I have scanned copies of the pages from this book documenting the descent. It can also be found on the LDS site www.familysearch.org.

The problem is that the Charles marked may be two different people. The author of the book swears his Charles's middle name was Colby, but I know my Charlses's middle name was Crittenden. The book's author says Charles's middle name comes from an uncle, but he has a paternal uncle named Colby and a maternal uncle named Crittenden. Both Charles's were born in Kentucky 3 Dec 1841. I have a cousin, descended from another child of Charles's than me, that claims to know Charles's father was George Wyatt Jr. But I've never seen any written proof.

To complicate things I found a person in Texas who submitted DNA results from a Wyatt cousin. Ancestry.com estimates we share a common ancestor within 14 generations. He traces his descent from Haute differently from me, and the only common ancestor we would have on the Wyatt side is Haute.

I'm hoping to find someone with a proven descent from Haute so that I can compare my DNA to. If it matches, then the Charles listed above is correct.

Shane

What company did you test with ?

Can you really trace your line to Haute with little doubt ??

I know only one Wiatt/Wyatt family in the US that has the papers to trace their line to Conquest.

Thanks.

William Wyatt
Bessie O Wyatt was my grandmother. I have a Bible that belonged to John Wyatt who died July 3d 1865 (Probably at Gettysburg)at 42 years 2 months and 1day, which means he was born May 2, 1823. Not much is legible but it also says that F.P. Wyatt and E.J. Waldrup were married in the year 1812. It also says that John Adams Wyatt was born on Aug 1, 1858. I am starting to track my family history and would like for you to get in touch with me. I live in Weaverville, grew up in Asheville (Grace). My mom was Mary Elizabeth (Betty) Bagwell. Thanks, Mike House housefamily4@verizon.net

Two John Wiatts in Gloucester County in the Late 1700s

Dear list,

There were two John Wiatts listed as property owners in Gloucester County, Va in the 1780s and 1790s.

I am trying to figure out how they fit into the larger Wiatt/Wyatt clan of Gloucester County.

Does anyone have any information or ideas of how they do ?

Looking at the Gloucester County land tax rolls found at
http://www.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~vaggsv/

(there were some years that there were no records)

There was a John Wiatt who had 360 acres.

In 1782 he was listed as John Wiatt.
In 1787, 1788 and 1789 he was listed as John Wiatt Sr.
In 1790 and 1791 the property was listed as the estate of John Wiatt Sr.
It looks like that in 1792 John Wiatt Sr has dropped off the tax rolls.
So it appears that this John Wiatt died in 1789 or 1790.

I have a hunch that this John is a grandson of Conquest Wyatt (b. 1655) but this is something I can not prove. Does anyone have knowledge of a John Wiatt who died in 1789-90 ?

I also believe that this is the same John Wiatt who resigned from the Petsworth Parish Vestry in Dec 1785. (see page 377 in the Vestry of Petsworth Parish by Chamberlayne [1933]).

As a side note, in 1792 two new property owners appear on the tax rolls.

Thomas Wiatt with 281 acres and James Wiatt Jr (listed as James Wiatt in 1792) with 79 acres.

John Wiatt Sr had 360 acres when he died in 1789-90. In 1792 Thomas has 281 and James has 79 acres.
281 + 79 = 360. Is this just a coincidence ?

Thomas and James are the names of the surviving sons of John Wiatt Jr who died in 1795. Did they inherit the land ?

More on John Wiatt Jr.

There was a second John Wiatt who owned property.

A John Wiatt Jr owned 340 acres in the years of 1787 through 1796. John Wiatt Jr no longer appears on the rolls after 1796.

I feel pretty confident that John Wiatt Jr died intestate in 1795. The Gloucester county platt book shows that the land was divided up between his heirs, Mary, Elizabeth, Thomas and James.

Am I correct that having one John listed as Sr and one John listed as Jr does NOT infer that this was a father and son pair. They are probably related, but how ?

There is a long list of the Descendents of Haute Wyatt that has been available on the internet for many years.
One is named Haute Wyatt Genealogy as an example.
But these John Wiatts do not seem to fit nicely into that tabulation.

For those of you who study the Wyatts of Gloucester County, does anyone have an idea of who either John Wiatts were and how they fit into the larger Wyatt clan of Gloucester County ?

Any info or suggestions welcomed.

Thank you,

W W
I was “gifted” with a box of genealogy having to do with one of my family lines after a researcher passed away. In the box is also a lot of other family lines that aren’t mine. I would presume that these files in the groups would go to a researcher as a unit.

Group 1:
Smith – Thomas Leslie Smith, Missouri, born Pittsylvania Co, Va to John Wesley Smith and Sally Saunders Claytor Leftwich
Leftwich – Bedford Co., Va.
Gregory – includes Minter, Adair Co., Ky, other Ky counties, Powhatan Co, Va., John Gregory Rev War Vet, (quite a bit of research)
Minter – Fayette County, Ky, Powhatan Co, Va.
Re: Virginia Clark Wyatt

Hi Dolores:

I have found a little more. I located a Virginia Wyatt, possibly your great grandmother, in 1870 in Millers Tavern PO, Essex Co, VA. She is 24 and is listed first on the census entry, indicating the head of the house, although she is shown as "keeping house". Immediatley below her is a William Wyatt, 18, farm laborer. Then we have Monroe F Wyatt, 4 and Dorothy A, 1. All show born in Virgnia. The 1870 census does not show relations so it is a guess if William is Virginia's husband. It's possible, but then what I found in the 1880 census tends to suggest he is not Virginia's husband. In 1880 I traced Monroe F Wyatt, now 14. He is living with William Wyatt, now 27, and is shown as William's BROTHER. William's wife is Mildred, 25, and they have a daughter, Mary (H or M), 4. They live in the Tappahannock District, Essex Co, VA.

On rootsweb, there is a family tree, "Brownson", that includes a William Thomas Wyatt, born Tappahannock, VA, November 29, 1873, died January 15, 1932 in Baltimore. Only one child is listed, Dolores, born February 3, 1928, as she married a Brownson. Logic would say that the William Wyatt of Tappahannock, Essex Co, 27 in 1880, is probably father of William T. Wyatt, born 1872/73, but I cannot find William T in 1880. The 1880 HeritageQuest Indes includes ALL family members, not just head of house, so William T, age 7 or 8 should be there, but I can't find anyone that works.

The William Wyatt of 1870 at 18 is too old to be Virginia Wyatt's son. Perhaps they are brother and sister and Monroe and Dorothy are also brother's and sister's to them. In other words, maybe they were all orphans by 1870 and Virginia took care of them all.

Going back to 1860, there is only one Wyatt listed for Essex Co, VA in the HeritageQuest index - Polly Wyatt, 35, living in Lloyds PO. With her are V.E. Wyatt, 12, a female (most likely Virginia E. - note same middle initial as the later Virginia E.), and William Wyatt, 8. So William and Virginia are brother and sister and Polly appears to be their mother - again no actual relationship shown in the census.

Going back to 1850, we find Polly Wyatt, 27, living with George Wyatt, 50, and three year old Mary. They live in Essex, VA where George is a shoemaker. Is George Polly's husband or her father. He is old enough to be her father. Who is Mary, 3? A daughter of George and Polly? Where is Virginia? who should be about 2. Perhaps the Mary of 1850 is the Virginia of later years?

Then, in 1850, I find a two year old Virginia Wyatt, who appears to be the daughter of Estus Wyatt, and his wife (?) Mary, both 24. They live with a Mary Hatton, 44, who may be Mary Wyatt's mother. Also living in this house is a Mary Tierney(?), 20, and Elizabeth Hatton, 11. Maybe Polly, 27, and this Mary, 24 are sisters. Perhaps the George, listed with Polly is a widower. Certainly is murky!

So, this probably just adds to the confusion, but you will have lots to discuss at your reunion. If I find anything else I'll be in touch. Enjoy the reunion - tell everyone cousin Harry says hi.

Harry Wyatt

I have found your grand father in the 1910, 1920, and 1930 census in Baltimore.

In 1910:
William T Wyatt, 38, head of house, married - for a SECOND time, married for six years. He is born in VA, his father and mother are born in MINNESOTA. He is a salesman in a candy shop.
Wife is Anna M. Wyatt, 25, married for the FIRST time, married for 6 years, born MD, father and mother born IRELAND, mother of 4 children, all living. Children are:
Anna M, daughter, 5; Ethel N, daughter, 4; George E, son, 2, and Andrew C, son, 1/12.

In 1920:
At 1917 Gough Street, Baltimore, MD
William T Wyatt, 47, owns his home, free of mortgage, married, he is born VA, father born PENNSYLVANIA, mother born VIRGINIA, occupation is huckster.
Wife is Anna M Wyatt, 35, born MD, father and mother born in IRELAND
Children are: George M, 12; Andrew C, 9; Annie M, 15, Ethel N, 14, Ruth T, 4+, and Virginia E, 2+. All of the children are born in MD.

In 1930:
At One Curley Street, Baltimore, MD
William T. Wyatt, 58, owns his home valued at $4,200. Is married, since age 30, born VA, father born VIRGINIA, mother born VIRGINIA, is a retail merchant selling produce.
Wife is Annie M. Wyatt, 45, married since age 18, born MD,father and mother born Irish Free State (Ireland). She too is a retail merchant, for groceries.
Children living at home are:
Ruth T, 15: Virginia E, 12; William T, Jr., 8; Calvin, 5; Ella G., 4 5/12; and Dolores, 2 1/12. All born in MD

I have tried to locate William T, Sr. in the 1880 census when he should be listed as 7 or 8 years old and should be in the HeritagQuest index - no luck. As you will note he lists his parents as from different states for each of the '10, '20, and '30 censuses. Daughter Virginia, born about 1918 is no doubt named after his mother.

Note also that in 1910, William T shows married for a 2nd time, so Anna was not his first wife. I also can't find any of his siblings that you mentioned. This is a tough one. I don't see where he was a sea captain unless this was before he married.

Hope this helps you some. I don't think I'm related, though my Wyatt's are from Maryland - Worcester County. If I find anything else I'll let you know. Good luck.

Harry Wyatt,
Perkasie, PA

Re: DNA - James Morgan Wyatt (1828 VA - 1905 TX)

Hello, Cousin Dorothy. I am happy to share all I have about your family. Let me clarify one thing up front -- there were two men named James Morgan Wyatt. My James Morgan Wyatt (1828-1905) is the uncle of your James Morgan Wyatt (1856-1920), so in my research I dub them James Morgan Wyatt I (mine) and James Morgan Wyatt II (yours).

Why don't you contact me by email at joanbusiness-genealogy @ yahoo.com? When I get your email address, I will send you some history of your direct line of Wyatts. I can also grant you access to my online family tree on myfamily.com where you can explore the Wyatts to your heart's desire.

The father of your James Morgan Wyatt II was John R. Wyatt (1835-?), son of Edmund and Margaret Wyatt of Russell County, VA. John Wyatt married Elizabeth Rasnick/Rasnake about 1855 and moved over to Kentucky. They had two boys -- James Morgan Wyatt II (1856-1915?) and Charles William Wyatt (1858-1890). The marriage apparently broke up and she moved back next door to her parents in Russell County, VA and later remarried; she kept the two boys. No one seems sure what happened to the boys' father, John R. Wyatt, but it is rumored he moved to Tennessee and remarried there.

In 1880 your James Morgan Wyatt II was in St. Jo (Montague Co.), TX, having apparently accompanied his aunt, Mary Wyatt Carothers, from Virginia to Texas where Mary's daughter had died and left a husband (Dr. Granville Kemper) and two very young children. James Morgan Wyatt II stayed in Texas and married Willie Jane Robison in St. Jo and had 7 children, 4 of whom survived. The couple eventually moved to the Murray Co., OK area where he died about 1910-1916; no one seems to know for sure where he died and is buried. If you know, I'd appreciate your sharing that info.

When you email me, tell me more specifically what information you would like to have and I'll try to help.
Hi Jeanne.

If you really want to go all out and have about $ 169 (US), you can get your father or a brother to take a Y-DNA test for genealogy.

I do not know what are the requirements of your assignment are and how much flexibility you have, but you could write a report on how DNA testing is used for genealogy research.
You could do this without having a test done.

Good luck,

W W
Grandsons of James Wyatt (b. 1674)
Dear list,

Assuming that you agree that Conquest (b. 1594) had a son named James (b. 1674),
can anyone provide me with their opinion of what you believe the names of James' children are ?

Do you think James (1674) had a son named John, b abt 1710 +/- a few years ?
Do you think James (1674) had a son named James, b abt 1710 +/- a few years ?

Did sons John or James have a son named John born around 1735 ?

I can trace my Wiatts/Wyatts to a John Wiatt who died intestate in 1795.

He owned land in Gloucester County, Va and the Gloucester county platt book shows that the land was divided up between Mary, Elizabeth, Thomas and James.

Thomas is my 4th great-grandfather and we estimate his birth as the late 1750s.

John Wiatt is my 5th great-grandfather and we estimate his birth as the mid 1730s.

I can not find the names of his parents.

I do not know how many sons John (d. 1795) had but I know that there were two that survived him. Thomas and James.

Maybe the names of his sons provides a clue ?

Based on what I think I know, and on a hunch or two, I think I can eliminate the other sons of Conquest (Francis, Conquest, Edward and John) as the grandfather of the John Wiatt who died in 1795. But I have no direct proof tying my John Wiatt (d. 1795) to James (b. 1674).

Your thoughts and opinions are welcomed.

Thanks,

W W
Thank you for the information.

I googled "Raymond Daily Nice" and I found his work, or at least part of it.

The generations that I am most interested in were missing.

Those are generations (assuming I counted correctly) 12, 13 and 14; specifically Conquest (b. 1655), his five sons, and his grandchildren.

Mr Nice's genealogy seems to be connected to that of Steven E Wyatt, which I have seen before.

Anyway, thanks again for the info.

W W
Hi Steven,

Thanks for the posting.

I am a little confused.

Are you saying that Mr Raymond Daily Nice had the info to break through your Brick Wall, or are you saying that you are needing the same info that I am ?

BTW – FYI - Alex Wiatt is publishing an updated edition of his 1980 book "the Wiatt Family of Virginia" soon.

Also, have you done the Y-DNA test ? I have a haplotype of I1.

Best wishes,

W W
My Grandfather Thomas Bonner Wyatt lived with a sister after he was orphaned. She came from a family headed by William Wyatt whose children listed in the 1880 Federal Census, Smith County,TX were Nancy, Alonso, Hellen and Lilly(who md. D.J.James/Jones).Grandfather was born 25 Dec 1882, someone wrote in my babybook the info that William McIntosh Wyatt was my gr.grandfather and he had been married to Elizabeth Tuggle at one time,my father was named Thomas Lawson Wyatt and my brother Thomas Gordon Wyatt. I have not found W.M.Wyatt records anywere and wondered if the census taker mispelled gr.grandfathers name on the census.

I researched in Seattle Public Library in their vertical file I found pages from a Wyatt Family History by Raymond Daily Nice, Sr..his interest was Generation 20.Page 24 C.
It was a copyright date c. 1981. It included the Nice Family and the original spelling of the name Wyatt (Guyot) when his ancestor came over to England from Normandy with William the Conqueror in 1066.It starts with Adam Wyatt 1320-1385 and ends (#16)William Wyatt, son of William Edward Wyatt, who came from KY in 1814 to Union Co.,IN in 1814. Alston Wyatt b. 1805 was 9 yrs. old. He married Elizabeth (born 1810). One of their daughters married Thomas Franklyn Nice and Raymond Nice Sr. named a son Raymond Nice Jr.

wyatt's Berkshire England

Looking for more information on my Great Grandfather John Wyatt born 1845 in Hillingdon, Middlesex, England lived in Uffington Berkshire. Cannot trace him after 1851 until he arives in New Zealand in about 1870. Parents were John Waytt and Harriet Palmer from Uffington. John was a tailor. Had brothers Albert, William and Edward and sisters Ann, Jane, Cordelia, Sarah and Maria. Hve traced some of these to all parts of Berkshire. My Gradfather James talked about a family property in London which woudl have been in family until early 1900's as he visited it during the Great War but cant figure out how to find out. Would be great to have any information.

Thank you so much for the information you sent...I always thought there was a chance my grandfather had been married before, because in one of the census with my great-grandmother Virginia, there is listed another William along with Wm. T. and he's about 3yrs. old. I was also curious as to way they, Annie & Wm.T., never named a son after him until their third son was born.
Like you, I found a lot of contradition in the census'.
Again, thank you for you quick response, we're having our annual reunion of the Wyatt Family in October and this will be a great help with my records.
If you find anything else, please forward to me.

e-mail address:
dolores11@comcast.net

I don't think there is a connection with the William Thomas Wyatt I'm looking for, he was born in Virginia to Virginia "Clark" Wyatt. I'm actually looking for his father.
Willian Thomas Wyatt, my grandfather, was born on November 29, 1872, in Tappahanock, Virginia.

Thank you for your reply,
Dolores
