I have just found William Wyber born 1823 Cape of Good hope on 1881 census living at Dapdune Road Guildford. Also the marriage of his son William Wyber to Mary Jane Cannon Aug 1881. They had son William James Wyber Feb 1883. Mary Jane went on to marry my grandfather Henry Hickmer in Guildford and I am wanting to find more info about him. If any Wybers can help it would be appreciated.

Malcolm, I received notification about your message to Elizabeth. I have been in contact with Eliz. in the past. My search shows that her James was the brother of 'Rev'. John Wyber and Margaret Kinnaird.(Children of Isaac and ? Robertson) They in turn are the ancestors of John Wyber, etc. (deceased) of Au. His brother David Keith Wyber has taken up the ancestry search. Joyce Nichols of Massachusetts is also related. A lot of history in this branch of the Wyber's.
I believe the Relief Church. Anna Wyber Dunne

Re: Wyber

Elizabeth

Your people are dissenters. The overwhelming majority of
Scottish dissenters were Presbyterians who belonged to the Associate, Burgher, Relief or United Secession Churches. The Free Church did not exist until 1843 and many of the older churches united in 1847 to form the United Presbyterian Church.

As it happens, there is a marriage proclamation entry in the parish of Old Kirkpatrick (Dunbarton or possibly Stirling, the parish is right on the border) in 1815 for the couple you mention. There are various references to the family of a James Horsburgh in the same parish and this family has all of the characteristics of a dissenting family, just like your own. Marion Horsburgh may well have been the sister of this James.

James Horsburgh is very likely to be connected to my family as he should be the son of William Horsburgh and Jean Brash. Was James Wyber or any of his children papermakers or involved with paper mills (where lots of labourers were employed in addition to the skilled papermakers)?

If you are interested in understanding about dissenters and how they appeared in the OPR record, you will need to refer to my paper that is contained in the conference notes of the 2nd Australasian Scottish Genealogy Conference (held in Melbourne, Australia, in 2006). Copies of the notes can be purchased via the Genealogical Society of Victoria website: www.gsv.org.au.

Do you have any extracts from OPRs for this family (including the marriage)? There may be internal clues in whatever you have been able to find to indicate which of the dissenting churches your family belonged to. You may also find this information from marriage certificates from 1855 onwards, but there is no guarantee.

Regards

Malcolm G. Horsburgh

Linda - My maiden name was PHILBEY - I reside in Tasmania, Australia.I am trying to get some family history. I believe there is a Philbey clan (with all various spellings) gathering in Suffolk at that particular church area every 2 years. I think a branch of Philbeys settled in Australia somewhere between the 1840s - 1860s. I think there is a Philbey crest/coat of arms with three nails(!!!!!????) on it. Please email me with any info. Thanks.

I got in touch with the hospital at Livingstone and they sent me some records (or at least info from records) I will need to dig them out, but you are welcome to have what I have.

I am researching the life, and particularly the First World War service, of William Wyber my Great Uncle (eldest brother of Robert, Margaret, John, Andy, Sammy, David, Minnie, Alfie and son of William and Mary Wyber). I would be very interested in any further information/photographs regarding William since very little material relating to him appears to have remained here in Scotland. I know that many of his family moved abroad and am quite sure that a couple of his relations are on this message board (I am Gregg Wyber's cousin!). I have compiled a lot of information about William Wyber's military background from the PRO, local newspapers, museums etc. and would be grateful for any further assistance in my research. Thanks,
Dianne.

Joyce, I tried to e-mail you direct, but your address is 'not known'. I found your family! You are related to John Wyber in Australia. You have a couple names wrong, but close enough to say for sure that you are one of his family.
William Delamoriniere Wyber b.1846 = Elizabeth Amelia France b. 1853. Child=Annie Gertrude b. 1877 = Hugh Spencer Houlder in 1901. Brothers of Annie Gertrude- Frederick George b. 1879 = Isabel King. Wm. Francis b 1876=Beatrice Louise Holland b. 1877. Are you in the New England area? I also came across an Eliz. Amelia Wyber at Ellis Island age 66 coming to visit her daughter! Don't remember all the details.
If you want to know more, e-mail me. pandadunne@qwest.net
Regards, Anna Wyber Dunne

My grandfather was born in 1911 (Frances Wyber was his mother), so I know that they lived there before that time. It was rumored that her family moved to Ireland in the mid 1800's. I hope that helps!

Hello Linda, Just was browsing and came across your message. I have a William Wyber born Cape of Good Hope in
1822. His father, my GGGrandfather, James Wyber, had as his first son, John born in 1817 @ St Helier, Jersey, this, is my GGrandfather. John would have been your Williams 'big brother'. First, I must say that I have been trying to connect with the 'Wrong James and John' for a year now! Finally had a researcher go into Kew. He came up with this information on the Wyber's. It all seems to fit! Would love to meet you and compare notes. Regards, Anna Wyber Dunne Contact me! pandadunne@qwest.net
