Cancer and BRCA2 Mutation in the WYGAL/DEAN Line

Are you related to the WYGALS of West Virginia?

Is there a high rate of cancer in your WYGAL aunts, uncles, and cousins (especially breast, ovarian and pancreatic cancers)?

If so, your family may have the BRCA2 mutation.

My wife and her Aunt are cancer survivors, and have both tested positive for the BRCA2 690delAA mutation. They are direct descendants of Catherine Jane DEAN, daughter of Hiram DEAN, and grand daughter of Ellis Dean, Jr. This mutation is dominant and carriers have a 50% chance of passing it on to their offspring.

Catherine Jane DEAN died of breast cancer around 1905.

I hope this is not the case, and don't want to scare anyone, but early detection of this mutation can save lives. If you think the mutation is in your branch of the family, talk to a doctor about getting a genetic test. Have them look specifically for BRCA2 690delAA as this test will be a lot cheaper.

This WYGAL line is descended from Clinton WYGAL, Sr., son of Elbert and Edith WYGAL, Edith's parents were Ellis DEAN and Martha KEITH. Elbert WYGAL was from Tiptonville Tennesse. I suspect it was the DEAN ancestor that introduced this mutation into the line.
The WYGALS of Wise County, West Virginia that are direct descendants of Ellis DEAN AND Martha KEITH may carry the BRCA2 mutation.

My wife and her Aunt are breast cancer survivors and have tested positive for the BRCA2 690delAA mutation. They are direct descendants of Hiram DEAN. This mutation is dominant and carriers have a 50% chance of passing it on to their offspring.

If you are in this line, and have a high rate of cancer (especially breast, ovarian and pancreatic cancer) in your WYGAL relatives, please talk to your doctor about genetic testing. Specifically mention BRCA2 690delAA as the test will be less expensive.

I don't want to scare anyone, but early detection of this mutation can save lives.

Re: WYGAL'S IN TEXAS

About Martha Perrie Wygal & Edna Alice Wygal Barr:
I visited Perrie & Edna back in the 1950's in Lyford. They were sisters, & cousins to my grandmother. Their father is Sylvester (known as Vet) Wygal, born 1 December 1846, in Newcastle, Pennsylvania [second son of Daniel & Mary (Cubbison) Wygal], and their mother was born Carrie Williams, m.1880. My great grandfather, Frank, was Sylvester's next younger brother. There were 6 sons & 4 daughters in the family. Daniel was born 23 September 1820 in Pennsylvania and died 4 September 1894, I think in Paola, Kansas. All that I know about Daniel's father is that his name was spelt Weigele; he was born 29 May, 1781;and he married Jane McFadden (b.1785) 27 December 1804. Should you find out more, I would be glad to hear about them.

Wygal Family Information

I am James H. Rogers II, the grandson of Elizabeth (Lizzie) Wygal Rogers, daughter of Harvey Clinton Wygal, born in Lee County, VA in 1899. I would love to get more information on the family. I am considering making a trip to Lee County in the near future and I would love to know if there is any family that remains there and the location of the farm. I would love to see the place that my gradmother told me many stories about. If anyone out there has any info, I would love to share. I tried contacting many people that had posted on this board years ago, but most of the emails are dead ends now. Thanks for any help that anyone can provide.
Re: Jack Wygal/Noe

Dear Sherree, Thank-you so much for the information. I am pleased to know that the Noes enjoyed having a son. I was able to research a bit more and find out that in the 1920 census my grandmother was married to John Wygal. Her name was Bessie C. Wygal and they lived in Los Angeles, CA. I have heard two very conflicting stories about how Jack C. Wygal came to be adopted and I won't go into them here. For fellow researchers, my grandmother's madien name was Bessie Cornilia Thomas and she was born in Praire City, Oregon in 1898 or 1899. In 1920 she married my grandfather Lucius Lamar Farnum and they had three living children, Delmar Durell Farnum, Roselyn June Farnum and Thomas Lamar Farnum, Sr. Roselyn married Rex Pollard and had a son, Michael Lamar Pollard. They are all now deceased. I have heard that Jack C. Wygal recently passed away and by the looks of some pictures that I recently aquired, it looks like he had a good, long life. Thanks again for your research, Thomas

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
So often I must say, "All I know is what I learn on Ancestry." Jack was the nephew of Flora Wygal. Her brother, John W. Wygal, is listed as father of Jack. Type in Jack Wygal to see his father's name. Then, click on John's father and see what is below. I do not know why he was adopted by Flora Wygal Noe and husband Wilburn or what happened to him. The person I researched for said Flora and her husband really enjoyed having a son. Hope this helps.
Wygal, Trolinger, Pulaski, VA

In a book I purchased I found an obituary for a James T. Trolinger, age 91, of Pulaski, VA. It is VERY lengthy, but here is the pertinent genealogy info: "Mr. Trolinger was a son of John and Mary Wygal Trolinger. April 8, 1886 he married Mary E. King and to this union the following children were born: John Edwin Trolinger, Henry Lewis Trolinger, William Pierce Trolinger, William Pierce Trolinger, Ellen King Trolinger, and twin girls who died at birth.
He is survived by one son, Henry Lewis Trolinger, of Johnson City, Tenn., one daughter, Mrs. Walter Price, Pulaski, and four grandchildren, Mrs. Stanyarne Little of Johnson City, Tenn., Mrs. R. J. Waugh, Pulaski, James T. Trolinger, Elizabethton, Tenn., and Lewis S. Price, Pulaski." The article also states "He was born and reared east of Dublin. His father, John T. Trolinger, named that town, and joined with Stephen Trinkle, grandfather of former governor E. Lee Trinkle in donating the railway station site, and he was 12 when the first train ran to that stop." The article names numerous pallbearers and flower bearers, with many famiy names included. There is no date on the article, but based on articles on the backside, I think the year of death would be 1935. If interested in a copy, please contact me.
jlwychor@charter.net

I have a WYGAL relative by marriage - Edna WYGAL, b. 8 May 1884, Paola, Miami, Kansas. Unfortunately on her death certificate her parents' names are "d.k." (don't know.)
The informant on the certificate was M. Perrie Wygal. Can you identify Edna's parents? She married Joseph J. BARR. They are buried in Lyford Evergreen Cemetery, Lyford, Willacy, Texas.

I'm a great-great granddaughter of William Wygal of Texas. I have heard some family info...and I have heard of a Wygal reunion in Virginia. No one I know has ever been there however, that is where my great-great grand daddy's Daddy migrated from. I am sure my mom would love a copy of that newsletter: apatton260@aol.com. Thank you.

I am the former wife of Joe Campbell, Aunt Sue's foster nephew. I can remember Fred,Sr., and Fred, Jr. visiting the farm. Joe's mother and father were James and Pat Campbell, Pat, of course, was Aunt Sue's sister. Aunt Sue belonged to the DAR and discovered that my family tree merged with hers and she had it traced back to the 1700s when the Slemps moved to this country from Holland. So, obviously, your family is the same as Aunt Sue's. Perhaps I could be of some help there. Maybe your dad remembers us. I had two beautiful children with Joe, Jason Harrison, who is now 25 and married to Melinda Mann, and Misti Amanda, who is now 23 years old.

If you email me at
wwirises@aol.com I will try to send you what I have - I believe there is a connection to our family as the childrens names are very much the same, etc. Perhaps this was a brother to our George who settled in Augusta Co. VA after residing in Berkley County (now WV) Thanks Ellie

Hello Everyone, I am list owner of the Weikle-L on Rootsweb have found approx. 30 different spellings of the name including Wygal. So far we have traced our (my husbands family) to PA in the mid 1700's there are some on our mail list who have gone back to their original immigrant but we have not been so lucky, ours went to Berkely Co (then VA) WV then to Augusta Co VA then to Monroe Co WV some of the family went to Ohio Indiana. There are some Wygals residing in Monroe Co WV at present one of them is married to a Weikle but they don't want to talk about their ancestors so I haven't been able to find anything on them as yet. I think there is a definate link, especially to the ones who resided for a time in Wood Co WV came down from Westmoreland Co PA Philip his family - his children were named the same as our George's children, etc, too many similarities. If interested please drop me a not at wwirises@aol.com.
Thanks Ellie
