Re: John and Anna Wyss – Maries County MO – Late 1800s

I took a trip home this weekend and spoke to my grandpa (Clifford Wyss, Monroe's son). He had some family history for me. John & Anna had another child in addition to the ones you had listed. Her name was Lizzie and she died young. They told Grandpa it was from the "black measles". Dory was the youngest. He didn't remember Millie ever going by anything but that name, so I couldn't get that clarified for you. There was a big age difference between John and Anna. Grandpa has John's baptismal papers and I will try to get a copy of those on my next trip home and send to you. John was in the homeguard during the Civil War. Grandpa thought that Anna was living in Jefferson City, MO when they met. Monroe was 2 in 1883 when they moved to the last family location, which is next to where my parents live now. The original house was there when I was a kid, but burned down in a brush fire. My Grandpa's brother Lawrence owns it now with his son Bill and his family.

John & Anna's son William was a farmer who married late in life and had a son, John Henry. Grandpa's comment on the woman he married was that her "elevator didn't go all the way to the top", so when William died from lung problems, the boy was taken in by his uncle John (John & Anna's son) and his wife, who Grandpa called "Aunt Bet". John Henry was killed in a tractor accident, I'm not sure at what age. They lived on property on the other side of the original family farm from the land my parents own now. John Lewis Wyss currently owns the land where John & Bet lived. I'm sure he's a descendent but I didn't get clarification on how. Based on his age my guess is he is John's son.

I also stopped by the Kenner Cemetery and took some photos of the Wyss graves that were there. William is there, then John (senior), then Anna, then Lizzie. There are also two stones next to those. When I asked Grandpa about them he said it was two babies that John & Bet lost. I took a couple of pics of all of them together and you can see the stones on the far right side.

I talked with Grandpa after I took the pics and he said in a different part of the cemetery there is a Jennings that he knows was a Wyss. I'll try to get that the next trip home. Monroe is buried in Fairview Cemetery. You can probably see the dates in the photos, but Anna's dates are 1842-1936 and John's has the date of death as 1894 and says "aged 80 years". When I get the paper from Grandpa we'll D.O.B. Grandpa also has a book with information from all the local cemeteries, so that could have some information as well.

It's giving me some trouble with posting the photos. I'm not a paying customer to Ancestry.com, so I'm limited in what I can do. If you want to email me at n_hughes@sbcglobal.net, I'll send them to you that way.

Thank you for your very kind offer. I am related through John and Anna's daughter, Millie who married William Jennings.

My info on the Wyss family is pretty bare-bones. I would like to confirm dates on John (abt. 1814 - 1894) and Anna (1842 - 1946 - she's quite a bit younger than John). Do you know when or where they were married? Do you know when John came from Switzerland?

I understand that several of the Wyss family are buried in Kenner Cemetery in Hayden in Maries County. Is that where Monroe is?

Monroe was my great-grandfather. He had 3 sons, Clifford (my grandpa), Lawrence and Raymond. All are still living in Maries County. I live in Kansas City but visit my family there about once a month and will be making a trip soon for Mother's Day weekend. I'd be happy to get whatever information I can for you on John and Anna while I'm there. Is there anything in particular you are looking for?

Rose Wyss married Emil Kempfer. They were cheesemakers in Ashipun, WI. Rose's mother was Magdaline (not sure of spelling) Wyss, don't know father's name at this time but will keep looking. Rose also had a sister Magdaline who married John Reber (my great, great grandfather). Magdaline Wyss who was Rose's mother died possibly in Winneconne, WI. I have a photo of both Magdaline, Sr. and her daughter by the same name. We may have a photo of Rose, Emil and family also. I'm also working on the genealogy at this time.

John and Anna Wyss – Maries County MO – Late 1800s

I am looking for information on John and Anna WYSS. John's dates are abt. 1814 – 1894. Anna's are 1842 – 1936. Both are buried in Maries County, Missouri as are at least some of their children. What I'm able to piece together from cemetery, census, and death certificate information includes:

John was probably from Switzerland and Anna was from Ohio.
Anna's maiden name was SCHMIDT.
They may have had 10 children. I have identified: John Crystal, William, Amelia (or Millie or Mildred), Monroe, Sopha, and Dory.

Does anyone else have any information on this family?
Laura,
We may very well be connected however I do not know exactly how.

My great aunt ALBERTINA SCHENK(1881-1963) married JACOB WYSS (1877-1961) in Stark County Ohio in 4/25/1903 which borders Tuscawaras. They probably married in Alliance Ohio which is where her parents (my grandparents) settled at a later date. (I have a number of relatives that lived in both counties in the early 1900s.)

Jacob and Albertina lived in Monroe, Wisconsin where a number of their descendents live today as I have been in touch with their son Jacob (he has since passed away) and grandchildren.

Jacob was the son of Nicklaus Wyss and a Marie which is information I got from a cousin but I have no information on any siblings of his and so I do not not if your Frederick could be a brother or not.

I only have one photo of Jacob Wyss with Albertina but unfortunately he had on a hat and it put a heavy shadow on his face which I cannot compensate for to see if there is a resemblance to your Fred. I will do my best to see if there is a way to connect Fred and Jacob at some point and if I do I will let you know.

Tom

I am pretty sure that Nicklaus immigrated but cannot be 100% sure as yet. According to the marriage record for Jacob and Albertina Schenk Wyss, he listed that he was born in Stark County Ohio in 1877.

However, I am not convinced that at time people listed where they lived in that portion of the application for a marriage license. I say that based on another marriage record I found for a relative that I know was born in Switzerland but listed his birthplace as in the U.S.

I will try to pull out the marriage record I have a review it again to see if it gives another clue.

There is a Wyss genealogy on the web. Google Genealogy of a Wyss family and you will get the history of one of the familes from the Canton of Bern. My ancestor Alfred Wyss was the only one in his immediate family to come from Switzerland to the USA (Lowell, Mi) but he could have cousins anywhere. This web site goes way back in the Wyss ancestory so you could be connected. David Wyss Rudge is the creator of this wonderful web site.
John Wyss or John Henry Wyss

John Henry Wyss ( or just John Wyss) was my great grandfather, born 7 October 1820 ? in the canton of Berne, Switzerland. He immigrated to the U.S. 19 July1847 with two young children, John Wyss and Anna Barbara Wyss.
They settled in Cochecton (Sullivan County) New York, USA, where the father, John Henry Wyss died (Lava Cemetery 1887). The young son, who immigrated with his father was John H. Wyss, born 25 March 1846 in Switzerland. John H. Wyss (the son) put on a document that his mother was Elizabeth. Our records are that his mother was Anna Barbara Arni. We do not know if John H.'s mother died in Switzerland before the father immigrated or on the boat to America. There are no American records for Anna Barbara Arni.

Please let me know at wilsted@ccp.com if you have any information on John Henry Wyss or his son, John H. Wyss. Thank you, Joy Wilsted

I'm not so sure where this fits with your Wyss, but my Great Grandmother was Blanche Wyss Carey Chase. From what I have found out, she was born in Cochecton Center Sullivan County NY and married Harry Chase, who died in Port Jervis NY, then she married Vincent Carey who also died in Cochecton Center. I am on the Chase part of her leg of marriages. Ironically, I work in Cochecton! Small world! I have been told by my Uncle that she had several children, he remembered a Vera and a Dorothy. He said that Vera moved to NYC to pursue a dream to sing, and Dorothy married a man with the last name of Salisbury.

Lorry Chase King

When they died in a flu epidemic, their five children (among them my grandfather) were all young and scattered between Iowa, Missouri, and Kansas. The whereabouts of all of them are known to us, but the origins of their parents remains a mystery. If anyone knows of a link to this couple, I'd very much like to hear from you.

Who is your mother/father, grandparents, etc. that get you to Susanna Wyss?

The Wyss Family Reunion is held every 3 yrs on the Sunday after the Tillamook Co. My Sister, Kathy, our first cousin, Tiffany, and myself are the planning committee and we haven't met yet.

Have a great day - we will be inside since we are not having typical CA weather (sunny and warm) and our To-Do list is lengthy.

Marcia

He was the son of Karl Johann Josef Wyss and Katharina Helena von Arx, both from Harkingen, Switzerland. He emigrated to the United States and lived in Kansas and Missouri. He married Theresia Fohn 13 Nov 1886 in St. Louis. Johann Wyss drowned 24 Sept 1894 in the Missippi River, St. Louis, Missouri. Johann Wyss in the grand-uncle of the submitter, Walter Wyss-Sunier, Krummackerweg 31, 4600 Olten - Switzerland.

Hopefully, this snippet will provide just the right clue to a researcher.

I posted a while back about an Anna Marie Margaret Wyhs, but had some facts mixed. I believe it was her mother who came from Austria and not her. Anna's father was Henry Wyhs who was born in Missouri around 1860. I know there are some Wyhs families around St. Charles, MO. Is there a Henry Wyhs or Anna in your lineage. I think her bothers or uncles were Frank and George. Thanks! Molly Antonio
