WOW. Yes, it seems the family was / is big. The Yamashiro family grave is in walking distance from the Himeyuri shrine. I have photos from when we were there of the grave site, its amazing.
From what you wrote, we could be related. I don't have many relatives here, Hawaii, but there is supposed to be a larger group of relatives in Brazil.

not sure how safe this site is so if you want, please send me your email to d.shiro@ymail.com. Not my mail email but one I do use. Sorry, sometimes internet can be scary

Hello!
Well first of all, thank you for replying. I didn't think I was going to get a reply at all. Well anyways, how interesting, I have heard that the Yamashiro family was big, but not to the point where the whole town was related.
I don't know about the shop, but I know that my mother was from around that area of Himeyuri Shrine.

Hi!
Wow, I had forgotten I posted on this account! Not sure original post I had put but I have gone to Okinawa, met relatives and have a little more information. I was told by the Yamashiro's from Komesu that if I should stumble across a Yamashiro from Komesu, that they are all related.
They kept a great family record.
A grand uncle owned a gift/soba shop rght outside of the Himeyuri shrine. It is now run by his son I believe

Hi!

I happen to stumble upon this and found some similarities.
My mother is from Okinawa and her maiden name was Yamashiro, and from what I've heard, my Yamashiro family is from Komesu as well. I'm not very familiar with the areas, but Itoman has come up a lot in topic of Okinawa and so has Makabe. I'm not positive, but I think I have a great great grandfather by the name of Kamata. So hopefully something will click somewhere!

Thank you!

Hi

I just got back from Okinawa and found my relatives. After talking and meeting with them I discovered several things:
1) There are many Yamashiros, my relatives are from Komesu. 2) There are many of my Yamashiro relatives who married "distant cousins" or "cousins through marriage"...thus a Yamashiro married to a Yamashiro...many of these
3) According to the relatives I met, "any Yamashiro from Komesu are related - though may be distant."
4) My great grandparents are Kamata and Uto, which I also found out, there are MANY Kamata, Uto, Kama names
5) My great grandparents came to Hawaii. My grandfather was born on the Big Island. He has family in Itoman and Komesu in Okinawa and Brazil
Would love to connect the family

My father, Yukio Maetoku, was born in Okinawa in 1936. He later moved to Argentina after WWII. He said to us that his grandparents were either Argentineans or lived in Argentina for a long time. His mom, Fusako Yamashiro, was born in Hawaii and later moved to Okinawa where she married Hideo Maetoku. They had 3 children and they both died during WWII. So... if we're talking about the same families, your greatgrandparents moved from Argentina to Hawaii and then back to Okinawa. But I don't have much more information to confirm all this. I believe that my father's grandparents were Koki and Uto Yamashiro. Do you know your great grandparents' names?

If and when I find the disk, if I can get more info on it, I will let you know as well.

Bunhei Hanshiro 1852-1949 His descendants are as follows:

Kamado, Busuke, Buskichiro, Seimatsu, Buyu, Bunsaburo, Bunshin, Kami, Aki, Ushi.

They were most likely born from the late 1800's to early 1900's. One of their children might be who you are looking for. I will have to try to search for the disk.

Mary

My grandfather, Kama Yamashiro, came to Hawaii in 1906 from Guishikawa, Okinawa. He and my uncle came to work in the pineapple and sugar cane fields. I'm sure we're not related, but I find it interesting that others are trying to find their roots. I received a copy of a document from the Japanese Consulate when I was in Hawaii in 1997; I presume it contained the information of my grandfather (and possibly other family members) when he arrived in Hawaii. It is written in Japanese and I don't read Japanese. Good luck in your search.

Yamashiro

Yes, that is right. "Yamashiro" does mean "Mountain Castle", actually, depending on the kanji -- but in the case of those individuals whose ancestors came over to the US from Okinawa, it is the most common kanji. (The other common kanji would mean, "White Mountain"). It is true, Yamashiro is a very common last name in Okinawa -- so trying to find one's relatives there would be a daunting task.

I lived and worked in Japan for three years (in Hiroshima-ken where my mother's paternal side of the family is from) -- and actually met a fair number of my long-lost relatives there -- and have also met some of her maternal relatives as well (from Nagano, but moved to Tokyo). I'm digressing here, though.

I, too, would be interested in finding my relatives in Okinawa -- but figure it'll be quite difficult. I do know that my dad's paternal side is from Urawa-shi and my dad's maternal side is from Naha.

Other information about me? I am currently living in Seattle, WA, but grew up in Orange County, CA. If anyone is interested in getting in touch with me, feel free to email me...perhaps, we could try figuring out more about our "Yamashiro" family trees together(?)

family tree

I am currently working on my "Yamashiro" family tree and am having some difficulty with some ancestors. I am supposedly, the thirteenth generation of a Yamashiro clan from Okinawa. My grandmother's maiden name was Hanashiro. My grandparents moved from Okinawa to Kaneohe, HI. I am trying to find info on the brothers and sisters of my grandparents who probably all resided in Okinawa. If anyone can help, I would appreciate it. I will try to help anyone else who is trying to trace their heritage. e-mail is fine.

just some small tips for you guys

Yamashiro is a name which is either from the island of Okinawa or near the city of Kyoto. There was a country/province called Yamashiro which is now known as Kyoto. There are also hundreds of people named Yamashiro in Okinawa, and supposedly, in the past, they were related to the monarchy of Okinawa.

Hi, I'm just looking for anyone who might be related to me. And maybe find out more about my ancestry.

Here's a little BG info:
My great-grandparents on my dads side moved to Hawaii from Japan around WW1. My grandparents lived in Hawaii for the rest of their lives, but my dad moved to Fullerton, California(which is where i grew up and where i live today).

I'm not really looking for anyone in particular, but I really want to find the Yamashiro's that are related to me, but never moved out of Japan.(And they supposedly do exist)

So please, if you might be related to me, give me an e-mail.
