Former Sheriff, Dies Monday
Jessie L Yancy, Sr, 74, died in his sleep at his home in Bruce, Mississippi early Monday morning. He had been in ill health for a number of years. Born in Calhoun, he was a son of the late William L Yancy and Martha Bratton Yancy.
As a young man he tauht school for 17 years in Pontotoc, Lafayette and Calhoun Counties. He owned and operated a grocery store in Bruce for 15 years.
Mr. Yancy served Calhoun County as sheriff from 1948 to 1952. He also sevred as night marshall for a few years. A veteran of World War I, he was a Mason and a member of the Methodist Church.
Services were held at Bruce Methodist Church at 2 Tuesday with Rev. E. A. Bailey, Indianola, Rev. William Carroll, Tupelo, and Rev. Royce Linton, Bruce, officiating.
Burial was in Bruce cemetery with Cook Funeral Home in charge of arrangements.
Active pallbearers were T. Z. Massey, Rudolph Brown, J. B. Ingram, Bob Buchanan, C. V. Plunk and Q. T. Crowson.
Honorary pallbearers were Willie Joe Reid, Jimmy Hnery, Albert Winkler, Harold Inman, John Clark, Arlis Campbell, Gene Edwards, Rupert Collins, Joe Grist, Jim Ray, W. W. Beckett and Bedford Zinn.
Mr. Yancy leaves his wife, Mrs. J. L. Yancey, Sr Bruce; a son, Jessie L. Yancy Jr. of Bruce; a daughter, Mrs. C. R. Easley, Jr. of Bruce; a brother, Jack Yancy of Bruce; three sisters, Mrs. Maudie Mize and Mrs. Virginia Hipp, both of Memphis, and Mrs. Jettie Cain of Bruce, and 5 grandchildren.
