Dee Yancey Moore Sr.

Dee Yancey Moore Sr.,84, died peacefully on Saturday September 26th at the Johnston Nursing Facility on the Hilltop campus. He was born on Nov. 21, 1924 in Mt. Vernon, Texas, the eldest son of the late Jess L. and Willie Frances (Yancey) Moore. Dee Y. was an active member of the Maine and Endwell communities, where he, together with his wife Carol Jane raised their family and operated Moore's Chevron. He graduated as valedictorian of his Mt. Vernon High School class and chose to serve his country in the US Navy instead of accepting a college scholarship. He proudly served during both WWII and the Korean War. While stationed in Pensacola, Florida he met and married Carol Jane Clark a young Navy nurse from Maine, NY to whom he was married for over 60 years. In later years, they enjoyed vacationing at the family cottage on Sylvan Beach, Oneida Lake and travelinge, especially "home" to Texas, until her death in 2005.. Dee Y. was a member of the Maine Federated Church, Sylvan Beach Union Chapel, Maine American Legion, Nanticoke Valley Historical Society and a past master of Maine Masonic Lodge #399. Dee Y. retired in 2002 after more than 50 years of caring for the automotive needs of his customers at his service station on Watson Blvd. in Endwell, NY. Perhaps most noteworthy was his deep rooted love of horses; known on a local level as the Founding Foreman of the Maine Mavericks horse club, and on the national level as a magnificent rider and showman. Dee Y. continued riding until well after his 83rd birthday.

Dee Y. was predeceased by Carol Jane and his brother Allen Moore. He is survived by his "lovely lady", friend and companion Dianne Lindeborn, his children and their spouses, Diane and Bud Ames, Cortland, Dee Yancey and Linda Moore, Maine and Tanya and Randy Pifer, North Bay. Also surviving are his brother and sisters-in-law, Kenneth and Lavon Moore and Dottie Moore. He was blessed with the friendship of Bob Avery, Tom and Laura Jones, Terry Stever along with many others.

The family will receive friends at the Maine Federated Church, Main Street, Maine from 6-8 pm on Friday October 2 and again from 9:30 to 10:30am on Saturday October 3.
OBITUARY - TONI YANCEY

MASSARO: Toni Yancey taught her students how to succeed
By Gary Massaro, Rocky Mountain News

Published June 7, 2008 at 12:05 a.m.

Toni Yancey taught hard and got a lot out of her students. But returned kindness was probably at the top of the list.

On her death bed in the hospital, she'd mention she had a craving. And whoever was nearby, a former student, a colleague, would rush off to fulfill her request.

"They brought her root beer floats, chili cheese fries, green chile," said her sister, Carmela Gonzales of Broomfield. "All she had to do was say one little word and they were off going to get it for her."

Mrs. Yancey died May 28 while waiting for a liver transplant. She was 59.

Her given name was Antonia. But most called her Toni. She was born June 2, 1948, in Pueblo to Mike and Mercedes Montez Martinez.

She grew up in Pueblo's Bessemer neighborhood. She graduated from Pueblo Central High School in 1966 and what is now Colorado State University-Pueblo in 1972.

She took a summer job in Boulder, and then began her teaching career in Denver, starting at Skinner Middle School. For about the last 20 years, she taught English at George Washington High School.

She was also faculty adviser to the cheerleading squad as well as to student council.

"She was the person who cared that students knew the right thing to do," said former GW student Meghan Quiat, who was elected to student council four years. "It wasn't a math class where there's a right or wrong answer. She was making sure that students learned the lessons that would help them succeed in life."

Quiat noted that GW has a diverse student population, and that Mrs. Yancey encouraged students to see the positives of getting along.

Quiat visited Mrs. Yancey in the hospital, telling her she was volunteering with Colorado Youth at Risk.

"They asked me why I wanted to volunteer," Quiat said. "I told them because I know how important it is to have the interested adult know that you know the right thing, to care that you succeed in life."

Mrs. Yancey had a calming affect on people, often coming up with ways to make things work without a lot of hollering and arm-waving.

"When we were living with our parents, we got in a sisterly fight about the neatness of our shared bedroom," Gonzales said. "So we put tape down the middle and coexisted in neatness and mess. I won't say who was who. Those people who know Toni and me could figure that out."

About 30 years ago, she met Jack Yancey through mutual friends.

They were married March 20, 1982, in Denver.

"There was a lot of give and take, a lot of cooperation," Yancey said. "It wasn't really that big of an effort for either of us."

Mrs. Yancey was always thinking of doing some kindness for others, Gonzales said.

"She was just a really giving person. That's all come back to her," Gonzales said. "Every time we would go shopping or out, she wouldn't buy one of it, she'd buy 10 of it. She had that many people she wanted to give it to."

She had no grandchildren.

"She adopted hundreds of kids that she taught," Quiat said. "There are hundreds of stories of people that she left a mark on."

She doted on her son, John David Yancey, Gonzales' children and grandchildren.

"She started a birthday tradition with my grandchildren," Gonzales said. "She would make them a necklace that included tied dollar bills. Every year they waited to get her present because they knew they got $20 from Auntie Toni that added to their birthday tally."

When facing death she continued to think of others.

"Even when she passed away, she donated her corneas," Gonzales said. "It's another way that she gave back."
Cecil Henton Yancy (b. May 23, 1921 in Jackson County, Alabama)is my step-father. He served in WW II in the US Army, first in NYC as a telegraph operator. He was subsequently posted to San Francisco and then to the Pacific theatre. I don't know if he was ever posted to Greenland. He now has Alzheimer's disease, and I doubt he would remember that detail.

http://www.haigh-black.com/obituary.aspx?MemberId=54404&...

In Loving Memory
David Yancey
10/22/1952 - 1/29/2009

David Yancey, 56, died at home surrounded by family and friends on Thursday, January 29th after a four month battle with cancer. David was born in Fitzgerald, GA and raised in the small nearby town of Abbeville, where many members of his family still reside. He attended Middle Georgia College in Cochran, GA and Columbus College, majoring in Music Composition, and touring the South with his band in their bus.

He moved to Florida after falling in love and marrying Ginny Camp who crossed his path while walking on the beach in Ormond. They went on to raise four children while he was playing music professionally with many bands in the area. He managed Strings N' Things in Titusville, FL and moved the family there for 8 years before moving back to Daytona Beach and opening their music store, Yancey Music Center, in Ormond Beach in 1993.

David's dedication and love for music has positively influenced countless lives as a performer, business owner, friend, and teacher. His unique spark, personality, and outlook on life touched everyone he encountered and will be sorely missed. But his passion and joy will live on as those he affected celebrate his life and his legacy. In addition to playing music, David also enjoyed boating, fishing, scuba diving, teaching, riding his motorcycle, playing piano in church and just cutting up and being silly. He just loved Life and his family so much!

David is survived by his wife of 35 years, Ginny; his sons and daughters; Melissa, Greg, Daniel, Lara, and Andrew (in-law); his sister Mary Hollis and Ron Hollis; and father-in-law Greg Camp. David was predeceased by his parents, D.C. and Geraldine Yancey of Abbeville, GA, his brother-in-law Ed Camp, and mother-in-law, Stoie Camp.

Music wove melody through the fabric of David's life from the time he started playing piano at five years of age, playing in bands from age 11 until his children played for him at the end, edifying his heart and soul.

A memorial service for David Yancey will be held 2:00 p.m. Saturday, January 31 at Oasis Christ Fellowship, 85 S. Tymber Creek Road, Ormond Beach, FL.

In lieu of flowers, a donation may be made to a charity of one's choice in his name.
