Dear "familyseeker141,"

YES! Ebenezer Yenney (My father's grandfather), was born - according to a letter he wrote to dad in 1935 - in Carver County Minnesota in 1861... He was 1 year old when the Great Souix Uprising occurred there and nearly wiped out the family... Ebenezer, we are told by Dad, struck out alone in his teens and settled in New Jersey, where he ran a hotel, I believe in Ocean City?? Dad was born in Wildwood NJ. I think we know that Ebenezer ended up in N. Carolina, and is buried there. Somewhere. He was married to Emily Riley (or Reilly??) and had Grandpa, Warren William Yenney (the 1st) and Esther, I think..... DO you know more???
Please email me directly at kyenney@yahoo.com.
THANK YOU!... Kris

Kris, we have recently been researching our Yenne/Yenney family who were Swiss (Bern canton) in origin and lived in Bleecker New York state. There was a brother named Christian (sometines Christopher)to my Great Great Grandfather, who we believe migrated to Minnesota in the 1850's, then to South Dakota in the 1880's. One of Christian's sons Ebenezer was born in Minnesota in 1861, but ended up in New Jersey (via Pennsylvania in 1891-96 & North Carolina from 1898). We found Ebenezer in New Jersey censuses in 1900, 10, 20.
Does this bear any relation to your Ebenezer ?

Yenney name variation and Bleecker, New York

Hi All,

I'm hoping someone has been able to get a lead on researching the German Swiss Yennys. I believe our branch came from Switzerland via France, or that's the family folklore.

My grandmother's grandparents John D. Yenney and Mary Ann (or Marion) Dean, daughter of Jonathan Dean, emigrated to Ontario, Canada from Rome and Bleeker, Fulton Co. New York in 1859.

Both John Yenney (townclerk) and Jonathan Dean were on the Bleeker council in the mid 1800s. Beyond this, I am absolutely stuck on how to trace this family's arrival in the US or other family members for John.

John D Yenney's dictionary, which my grandmother had at one time in her possession, had the name "Jaen" written inside--could this have been a spelling for "John" or a variation of "Yenney" do you think?

Any help and advice will be gratefully appreciated.

Thanks

She is listed in the various census' as Lillie G., M. Grace, and Grace E all in Mahaska. I believe she is the daughter of John H. Yenney and Nancy McFall.

Siblings are: George S.; Frances E; Fred J; Charles A; Emma J; Sarah A and Berniece G.

I found a book: The Eastburn Family in America
Chapter 7, Section 1
Page 163
that I drew information from, but have not documented their facts since I did not make a connection to my Yenney Family with this one.

The parents of John H. Yenney were John George Yenney [from Germany] and Mary Catherine King. Again, not documented.

Check out Mahaska County in 1860 under "Geaney" and 1870 under "Yenne" in the same county, and you will find this family in the census.

I did find a microfiche I am going to order, it has John George listed in it. Will let you know what I find. There is also another book I found I need to look at in Salt Lake. Again, I have to go to look at it. I will be going in May. I am also going to see if I can follow your steps on finding the exact date for him. right now I have it narrowed down to 3 possibilities in Baden, Germany and his exact birthday would help a lot. will keep in touch.

Hi, Did you see the message from Diane. Thanks for the monkeywrench Diane (grin). All of those dates had me confused to. I have a copy of the census where he states he was from Baden, Germany. Switzerland is landlocked so had to go through another county to leave. The only way I can figure he left from Switzerland was if he was in Freiburg (which changed from Germany to Switzerland and vice versa every couple of years). Due to some info in a bible we have an exact date for him. I have not been able to verify this yet. That book turned out not to be much help-the one in Salt Lake. I am currently trying to find the address to the relations that have the bible. In fact I am getting ready to write up a short history on JG Yenne for the family site at http://www.familyshoebox.com/family/genealogy

It is believed that he was born in Stausborg (now Germany) At the time he was born it was in Switzerland. About every two years it would go back and forth between Germany and Switzerland. When he came over it was under the German Reign. I think this is where all the confusion has come from. I am still researching. I found a record stating he came into Pa so I am currently looking for those ship records.

Charity

Hi.. Not sure if this is any help...but My Great Grandfather, Ebenezer Yenney (an americanized spelling of a Swiss name from Bern..not sure of the original spelling, perhaps Jenney, Jenni....?) was born into a large (11 children , Dad says) family in 1861 in Watertown, Carver County, Minnesota.... His letters say his father, Christopher Yenney was born in Bern in 1800(!)..
Ebenezer headed East to New Jersey and PA, but I also know of a James Yenney, who founded the YENNEY MUSIC store in Olympia, Washington.. You might check with the new owners of that store (Not Yenneys, but they kept the store name...and know a bit)...

The name may originally been Jenni. It was originated in Germany and then some went to Switzerland (In Switzerland it was spelled Yenne and then an H was put in front of it (Hyenne).

I was going through my info tonight and found where I had written the ciites down. I found it on Microfilm # 6053507. It lists yenny, Yenni, and Yenne. It said Les Nams de famille suisses Fr. Morlon*-Vuadens a GE Carouge b. I hope this helps you. If you are interested in see the Yenne family site, let me know, we are always open for suggestion. With Yenne (any variation) it is possible somewhere along the line we are related.

Yenneys in Switzerland - where?

My g-grandfather was George Yenney, but not your Pennsylvania ancestor. My George Yenney immigrated from Switzerland with his wife and children in the late 1870s, to Ohio finally Missouri. I know their children were born in canton Bern, but I would like to find out exactly which town in Switzerland the Yenneys came from. I have other Swiss ancestors, and by knowing the original ancestral town, I was able to trace their lineage back to the 1400s, due to excellent town records. Even though the children might have moved to nearby towns, the information about them was recorded in the original ancestral town. So if you know of some possible towns where Yenneys might have come from, I would love to have that information.
Thanks for your help, Rosemary

Hi. I just came across some information from the US Census in 1860, August 8, Martin County Indiana, Halbert Township, page 929 (9th US Census) records John George Yenne as age 79 and born in Baden Germany. The Children were Elizabeth and Katherine born in 1816, Henry born in 1817, George born in 1819, Anna born in 1824 and Joseph in 1828. Of interest is there also is a daughter Susan who was born in 1871. Hope that helps clear up where John George was born. I have to assume he is the one who told the Census Taker the information used.

I am searching for information on my great grandfather Yenney. I do not know his first name. The only information I have is the following. Married Joanna Schmit or Schmitt, lived in Tacoma, Washington. Had 2 daughters named Helen and Celia Frances Yenney. 1 son I think named Robert that vanished while in the Navy. Mr Yenney was killed in a railroad accident in Grays Harbor, WAshington in about 1924. My source is an 82 year old uncle. He belives that his grandpa Yenney may have had family in Main. Any information on the above would sure help.

I, too, have been researching the Yenneys. The parents of your Henry J. Yenney were John Jasper Yenney and his wife, Diena. John Jasper Yenney was my great-grandfather; I am the granddaughter of Fred Yenney (who was brother of Henry J. Yenney). John Jasper and Diena Yenney had 7 children: Willie, John R., Henry J., Fred (George Frederick), Bert, Chris, and Bertha. My mother knew all of these people except John Jasper. I have more info...and would like to learn additional info from you, as well.
Yenne...Yenney??

Your message suggests that the names "Yenne" and "Yenney" are spelling variations of the same name. Is this the general thinking?? I had heard in my research that the name "Jenney" and "Yenney" were the same and that the "Y" spelling occurred in the US because the German pronunciation vocalized the "J" as a "Y" to Enlgish-speaking ears. Any thoughts on this? I am looking for the ancestors of John Jasper Yenney (B:early 1850's; married in WI or IL; descendants primarily in IL/NE). Anyone know a conncection here?

I am researching the Yenney name...particularly John Jaspar Yenney (b:~1850). I recently came across info pertaining to a "Caspar Yenney" as follows: "Caspar Yenney, Allegheny Co., PA, 1856...applied for Naturalization Papers". The source for this info is: "A List of Immigrants Who Applied for Naturalization Papers in the District Court of Allegheny Co., Pennsylvania" publ. by Western PA Gen. Soc. (3vol); vol. 3: 1856-1869. Since PA and NY are so close, it could be pertinent to the "Caspar" you are looking for. Hope this helps!

Tennessee/New Jersey Jenny/Yenny

My GG Grandfather Caspar Jenny, came to Newark, NJ from canton Glarus, Switzerland c.1865. I believe he traveled to the Swiss colony of Gruetli, TN c.1871 to marry Annie Barbara Alt, though they left soon after for Chattanooga and Memphis, eventually returning to Newark. One of their sons, my Ggrandfather Caspar Jenny ended up in Massachusetts, but they may have had as many as 4 other children, completely unknown to us now. His name is spelt variously as Jenny, Jenney, Yenny, Yenney in old records, so perhaps the other children ended up as Yenn(e)ys. If anyone thinks they have a TN or NJ link, I'd love to hear from them.
Cheers, Frank

Yenne, more b'dates

Hi Linda, I see you've been in contact with Charity.
Well to really throw a monkey wrench into the mix, I have totally different dates for John George Yenne.
1) He was born near the German border in Switzerland, about 1785. He came to America, from Switzerland (age 18, 1803) - making the year about 1784-85.
2)He was born 1782 near Strassburg, province of Alsace-Lorraine (France) during German supremacy.
3) from Bible records in possession of Miss. Ruth Yenne (Mrs. Harry Parnell) of Boise, Idaho says died Oct. 20, 1864 age 81 years, 7 mo., 28 days. (b.Feb. 21,1783).

So take your pick!! These all came from the Yenne book (1960's) that is microfilmed at the LDS.
Nice to meet you. Do you have more on the children of John W and Melinda (Studebaker) Stephen?
