I am the great-granddaughter of President Rafael Yglesias Castro (through his first marriage to Rosa Ross Banuet). I am searching for documentation of this civil marriage - which took place in Cartago in the 1880's...app 1883-4?) There was an earthquake in Cartago in 1910 in which civil records were destroyed. I am fluent in Spanish as well, and live in Los Angeles. I have family documentation on this part of his life and would love to connect with direct descendants and collaborate on an article. Thank you so much, Liane Schirmer
rdcltheory@aol.com

Re: Yglesias in America

Dear Yglesias,
I see your posts are from years ago, therefore don't know if you are still currently undergoing research, but really hope that you are, and that we can get in touch.

My name is Maria Jose Yglesias, I am Costa Rican, amd currently 26 yrs old. My family, the Yglesias with Y of this country, have all been very interested in history and genealogy always. My great grandfather, Ruben Yglesias Hogan, held a seat at the National Genealogy Academy, and the National History Academy. Today, my grand father and father continue with his studies, and currently I am also doing so, by using all his and his ancestors' archives and studies.
It might be of your interest, since you have posted several queries about these subjects, that the first Yglesias I have knowledge of who came to Central America, was Ignacio de Yglesias y Sotomayor, son of the Spanish Captain Ignacio de Yglesias, there are records of him being in Costa Rica in the first half of the 1700's. Although he married in 1749 (with Agueda Garcia), he had an illegitimate daughter in 1748 allegedly with Juana Nicolasa de Vida y Martel. This daugther was called Juana de Yglesias. I have no record that he had children from his marriage with Agueda Garcia

Juana herself had an ilegitimate son, allegedly with Italian doctor and famous character of the time, Dr. Esteban Corti. This son is Joaquin de Yglesias, one of the Fathers of our nation, author of our first Constitution, and most relevant historical character, and who is said to have looked very much alike Corti, proof of his parenthood. In 1819 Joaquin married Petronila Llorente y La Fuente, sister of Costa Rica's first Bishop, Anselmo Llorente y La Fuente.
From their marriage, I believe there were several children, I do not recall the number at this moment, but of interest, their sons Francisco and Demetrio. Demetrio was the father of President Rafael Yglesias Castro, president of CR from 1894 to 1902 (Demetrio himself was designated as provisionary President twice during his son's presidency). Francisco on the other hand (Joaquin's other son), was father of Gerardo, who was father of my above mentioned great grand father Ruben Yglesias Hogan, who was father of my grandfather, Rodolfo Yglesias, currently living.
With this, 3 of your "posts" are referred to: Yglesias in America, Esteban Corti, and President Rafael Yglesias Castro. As you see, all of us Yglesias descendants, are allegedly also descendents of Esteban Corti.
I have a lot of very interesting documentation of all of these names and families, so please feel free to contact me for further info exchange, you can write to my e-mail myglesiasr@legalyglesias.com. Also I would appreciate if you have any information that can be of interest for me. I am also trying to complete and research my family's history, that is actually how I came to this site and your posts.
Best regards,
Maria Yglesias

Has anyone ever heard anything similar to this? A group of Iglesias young men, perhaps brothers, came to Central America from Spain. Then they split up and one went to El Salvador, one to Costa Rica, one to Guatemala (?), changed Iglesias to Yglesias. I'm trying to validate this piece of family lore. Thanks!

Guess what?? I was looking specifically for descendants of Pres. Yglesias and I've found you! What luck! Well, in my family, the story goes that three brothers, one carrying a small boy named Juan Yglesias, sailed from Spain to Puerto Barrios, Guatemala. I believe the three young men were Matias, Carlos, and Rafael. I have though found a little history on Rafael, such as his father, Demetrio Y. Llorente, who I hope is an ancestor or relative of mine. I do hope that you can maybe help me find any information about this story and the origins of these men. I'm a descendant of the young boy (possibly a son or younger brother of Matias) and am originally from El Salvador, but now reside in Texas. Thanks for any help; it will be greatly appreciated.-Daniel

Sons-in-law of Rafael Yglesias Castro.

I am tracing my Martin genealogy from Cuba to Costa Rica, probably during the second half of the 19th century. We know that a great-grandfather's brother with the Martin surname and the nickname "Piquín" went to Costa Rica sometime during that period and married the daughter of the President of Costa Rica. By my calculations, that president may have been Rafael Yglesias Castro. According to information gathered so far, he had 4 daughters: Luisa, Eudoxia, Margarita and Maria de Los Angeles. I believe tha Maria de Los Angeles became a nun, Luisa married Franz von Tattenbach and Margarita married Guillermo Esquivel. Therefore, if my ancestor married into this family, it could only have been with Eudoxia or in a second marriage of Luisa or Margarita. Do you have any information that may help me? My Martin surname id of French ancestry and was pronounced Martén in Cuba, although the spelling among my family there always remained in the original French, with an i. Your response would be most welcomed. You may contact me at mrmartinroper@att.net.

Thank you kindly,

Dr. Margarita Martin
University of South Carolina
Columbia, SC 29208

Yglesias History

Sir Name

Iglesias, Iglesia, Yglesias, De Iglesias, De La Iglesias

Origin

There are not a lot of information on this sir name, which is presumed very old and it's been traced to the times of the Godos.

Distribution

It's considered a progenitor of the lineage of Don Alvar de Iglesias or De La Iglesias, a very fierce and persistence warrior that around the time of 725 A.D. When the invincible Don Pelayo reconquered the City of Leon, they faced an attack of the moors in a church that was called ( San Pedro de Cavatuenta ) and with only one hundred and fifty men, they defended and held on to the avalanche of five thousand moors. They fought with so much intensity that they killed two thousand moors, the moors seeing the ferocity of the one houndred and fifty Spaniards, retreated and never came back to the the city of Leon in Northern Africa. In memory of such event it made the Iglesias name powerful which in time fell back to the patriarch marquees of total. Other houses of the Iglesias lineage settled in the Mountain of Leon, while others were found in Galicia, in the valleys of the Canagas and in the fellowship of Santa Eulalia de Trugulfe, judicial party of Mondonedo, and another in the Villa of Torreiglesias of the party of Segovia and finally another in the Carrascosa de Arriba of the judicial party of Burgo de Osma.

Historical Characters

In November of 1524, Rodrigo Galvan de Bastidas, organized with the kings of Spain the exploration and colonization of the new lands. In those times it was very difficult to find sailors in Cuba, the reason being that Hernan Cortes took them to help him conquer Mexico. Nevertheless, Bastidas was able to find some ships eventhough they were not in very good shape, he and two hundred and forty men disembarked near the Venezuelan coast. In this group of conquistadors was Diego de Iglesias Gajarte, whose place of birth is not known, first of which this last name came to the Americas.
