My father was stationed in Germany during the Vietnam War and they pronounced Yopp as Jopp. Apparently, that is the German pronunciation, so that is perhaps why some have kept the Jopp name.

Hi,

I don't know if this will reach you or not.

My grandmother was Ethel Gay Yopp. Her father was Peter Yopp.
She had a brother, my uncle Fred, who was a dwarf crippled and she took care of him until a few years before he passed away in Beckley WVA at the "state home."
Ethel married Roy Vincen Derringer and they had 7 sons.
She was 13 and he was 15, however, they lied about their ages and said that she was 15 and he was 17, so their marriage license is not accurate.
I don't know if her sister Alice is still alive. I remember visiting down there once and she came over to visit. I think they were half sisters?
Any further info or an obituary would be great.

I also remember my grandmother telling me that she had a geneology trace done and that the origin of the name YOPP was in fact Jewish.

Dawn,
Did you ever find the parents of John Yopp, husband of Winifred? I do not have the birth date of my John Yopp, but his children were Samuel, Sally, Jeremiah (Jerome?), Molly, Winifred Ann, and John (b. ca1769). If that is the same John Yopp you are looking for, he was born in Northumerland County, Va, and died in Onslow Co., NC., will probated July 1803. I have a copy of the will which, of course, does not name his parents but lists children & grandchildren. If you have info on John's parents, I would be very grateful if you would let me know. Thank you.
Patricia P.
Magdaline YOP

I've recently received an Ohio death certificate and obit for an ancestor and both these documents list her mothers maiden name as YOP.
Can anyone tell me about this name, if its unusual or in what areas of Germany it may be concentrated?
The mother, Magdalina YOP Butzer Green (AKA: GRUN) was born in Germany c. 1813 and died in Youngstown, Ohio in 1896. She and family emigrated in 1854 under the name GRUN which was changed eventually to Green.
I checked dastelefonbuch.de and there was only one hit for YOP and that was in Eppertshausen, a municipality in southern Hesse in the district Darmstadt-Dieburg (per Wikipedia). Could YOP be a misspelling of YOPP or JOPP?

Thanks for any suggestions.
Captain Thomas and Bill Yopp (Laurens Co., Georgia)

Searching for information on Thomas and Bill Yopp. Thomas was the son of Jeremiah yopp and Bill was a servant to the family. Thoams and Bill were constant companions growing up. When the Civil War started Thomas was elected Captain of the 14th Georgia, Co. H Laurens Co., Georgia) and Bill accompanied him.

Bill was given the nickname "Ten Cent Bill," becausehe shined the shoes of the men in the Regiment and performed other duties for ten cents. He surrendered with the men of the 14th at Appomattox Court House.

After the war Bill moved from Laurens Co (Dublin) to Macon, Ga. He worked as bellboy at Brown House in Macon, a porter in an Albany Hotel in New York, was a servant to a family in California, and was a waiter on railroad dining cars. He served ten years as a porter on the privae car of a railroad president. Then he worked on a Navy collier and at Camp Wheeler. His varied career led him around the United States and the world.

In his later years, Bill returned to Georgia to find his former master Thomas destitute and in poor health. Captain Yopp now over eighty years old was moving into the Confederate Soldiers Home near Atlanta. Bill Yopp visited the home often. The board of trustees voted to allow Bill to stay at the Home for as long as he live. At the death of Captain Yopp, 92, Bill made an address expressing his admiration of the kind and generous dispostion of his old master and the respect of each other.

Bill died on June 3, 1836 and was buried in the Confederate Cemetery at Marietta, Georgia. His former master, Captain Thomas Yopp was also buried there. Bill Yopp was the only black person buried in the cemetery. The state of Georgia provided his gravestone, that reads: Drummer Bill Yopp, Co. H, 14th GA INF CSA

I'm writing a book on the 14th Georgia, Any additional information is greatly appreciated!

YOPP in Mississippi and Tennessee

I am searching for a Yopp family who may have had a daughter named Temperance, who married Elijah Sexton and appears on the 1850 census for Tippah Co., MS. In 1879 as the widow of Elijah Sexton, she grants a Deed of Gift to Mary W. Sexton Harper Hawkins in Hardeman Co., TN. I DO NOT KNOW that Temperance's maiden name was Yopp! It is also possible that Elijah Sexton's mother's maiden name was Yopp. I do know that Mary W. Sexton Harper Hawkins, born 1843, named two of her 6 children Ashby Alexander Yopp Harper and Lula Yopp Hawkins. ANY info would be most appreciated............Jim Smith
