Hello,
I cannot say I have done much research into my Yost line but I wanted to post what I have found so far in hopes that someone might know more about the VA/ MD Yosts and provide me with information that might help me determine where my Yost ancestor came from.
George Yost born 1787 virginia (census information) died 1865 roane county tn
Married Margaret McCanley born about 1789 virginia died after 1865 roane county
NOTE: from the book “Prominent Tennesseans” page 89 grandson James Gideon D’Armond. States grandparents were George Yost and Margaret McCanley (only found reference to her maiden name)
Possible marriage record in the abstracts of marriage bonds Staunton VA page 558 january 19 1808 George Youst to Peggy Cawly (I know...)
Also noted in the book “Dearmond families of America” pg 60 (talking about Samuel J DeArmond sr…He married second Margaret Ann Yost (b.july 4 1830) Claibourne county TN, daughter of reverend George W Yost (b. MD 1787 d. 1865) and Margaret (b. VA). She came to Kingston with her parents at the age of 2 years and was of German –Irish extraction. (footnoted: East Tennessean Kingston tn Thursday march 4 1897: Obituary
Mrs. Margaret Ann D”armond, wife of SJ D’Armond sr was born in Claiborne county tn July 4, 1830 and died at her home in Kingston at 20 minutes to 6 o’clock Monday (January 18 1897) morning of pneumonia aged 66 years 6 mo and 14 days…She was daughter of Rev. George Yost and Margaret Yost … her father was reared in MD and her mother in VA…
(MY note: I am wondering if the obit writer mixed up the birth of Margaret's father with where his family originated in the Untied states...)
Children:
George w b 1812 va died 1871 roane county
James c b. 1822 Tennessee
Eldridge A b. 1824 TN
Margaret A b. 1831 d. 1897 TN
Catharine E b. 1832 TN
Allen H b.1837 TN
Census records:
1830 census Clairborne TN
1840 census Roane TN
1850 census Roane TN
1860 census Roane TN

And from:
http://www.yosthistory.com/
In the list of the improverished religious agitators of the Emmen Valley were given the sons and daughters of Christian with their ages: Jacob, age 18; Gasper, age 16; Chartharine, age 14; Heinrich, age 11, Barbara, age 8; and John, age 4.
...
x. JACOB YOST, b. 1754.
...
The children are listed as: Elizabeth Yost, Jacob Yost, John Yost, Rebecca Yost, Henry Marshall Yost, Polly Eleanor Yost, James Casper Yost, William Yost, Fletcher Harris Yost, and David Greiner Yost.
...
For instance, in the "Children of Henry Yost" Jacob Yost's biography mentions, twice, a brother George, who was a minister and moved to Clareborne, Tennessee.
...
There are nine children listed there, they are: Elizabeth, Jacob, John, Rebecca, Henry Marshall, James Casper, William, Fletcher Harris and David Greiner.
...
JACOB YOST, b. Bet.
...
Second, it is mentioned that George left Virginia early in 1819 with his brothers Henry Marshall and Jacob via Clareborne, Tennessee, where George settled.
...
Jacob Yost was the second child of Henry Yost and Polly Waggoner, born 1773/74 in Virginia.
...
The Yost brothers, Henry Marshall, Jacob, and George left Virginia early in 1819 via Clareborne, Tennessee, where George settled.

So I am wondering if anyone can supply me information about
my George yost and if he might fit into jacob/henry yost line. I have his will and some of his land transactions in Roane county and have a pretty good handle on his life in Roane county but would appreciate any discussion on his early years.

I found in an antiques shop a photgraph taken in the early 1900s; written on the back is "Kathleen Yost, 18 years of age". I suspect the picture was taken in the midwest, perhaps Illinois.

I would like to reunite this photo with the nearest relative. If I am unable to, I will donate the photograph to the LDS archives.

Do you think this might be your relative?

I hope you are still checking these because I really want to get in touch with you to check on some information you have. Your grandmother Catherine Handley would have been related to me. Her father was Paul Handley and her mother was Anna Marie Coleman. My great-grandfather was William Handley who was brother of Paul Handley. Are you sure that Catherine Handley lived at Sylvan Heights? I have a 1920 census that shows that she lived with Catherine Handley in Steelton in 1920, as did most of the children from Paul and Anna Handley when Paul died. I think one of the children ended up inheriting the family home in Steelton. I have lots of information on the family that I want to share with you, including some things that belonged to Margaret Coleman, the mother of Anna Marie Coleman Handley. Please contact me if you can. My home email is boligjb@pa.net. My father was Victor Handley, son of William Handley. He still lives in Steelton. Thanks for the help!

Jill

Thabk you so much for the info. I found in are local, newspaper a article on a Elizabeth L. Yost The date of the article was Jan. 7 1847 she was invovled with the estate of David G. Yost who was a lawyer in Hagerstown Md. He was a wealthy man, and lost it all, and took his own life. The article states. I don't know if this is the same Elizabeth Clark Yost I'm searching. It is strange about William Yost Jr. How could he be so lost, maybe killed during the civil war

Elizabeth Clark was the third child of Joshua and Mary Ann Porter Clark. She was born in Morgan County, Virginia approx 1828 she was listed in the 1850 United States Cenus for Morgan County Virginia with her father Joshua Clark age 54 a Farmer. Missing from the family census was Elizabeth's oldest sister Martha, who was listed with her husband, and a younger brother Stephen who was 21 at the time, but was not married his whereabout in the 1850 Cenus is unknown. Thank you. I would appreciate any insight, Elizabeth has been very differcult to follow and a lot of un-clear information.

The Porter connection is interesting. Levi Yost married Martha Porter in Morgan County in 1832. He was a son of John Yost (ca 1769 - ca 1855) and Elizabeth (unknown). Levi's sister was Nancy Yost, and her husband Samuel Merchant was the bondsman for the marriage of Levi Yost to Martha Porter. Nancy and Samuel are in my line.

Levi and Nancy also had a brother William, and at first glance your William Jr. might be his son. At least the time period matches. But there is an 1870 court case about the estate of John Yost, and in that case it states that John's son William Yost left Morgan County about 1820 for Muskingum Co OH, died there about 1840 and left a son who moved to California. William married Betsy Miller in Morgan Co in 1812 and married a second time to Mary Lewis after migrating to Muskingum Co OH.

If your William Jr was his son you'd think that would be mentioned in the court case. So although the Porter connection points to a relationship to the other Morgan County Yosts, I don't know of any records to identify William Jr.'s father.

Kathleen Yost, early 1900s

I found in an antiques shop a photgraph taken in the early 1900s; written on the back is "Kathleen Yost, 18 years of age". I suspect the picture was taken in the midwest, perhaps Illinois.

I would like to reunite this photo with the nearest relative. If I am unable to, I will donate the photograph to the LDS archives.

I don't know about Conrad. There was a Conrad but maybe in Reading, Pa. I have seen Conrad married Amanda J. bright. I do have Edith Mae Yost that married a Charles Zeiglus Weber Bright. Born about 1827, d. abt. 1927 Reading, Pennsylvania. I believe she got married 1910. I believe she may had sisters but I don't know the names. Edith was born in Churchtown, Pa. and maybe met Charles Zeiglus Bright in Norristown, Pa. and later moved to Reading in Berks Co., Pa. I don't know if they had children. The names you have maybe be tied into mine. I have no pictures of Edith and hoping someday to find one. Hope to hear from you soon. Edith's father may have been George W. Yost.
