Hello Filipa,
I was fascinated by your recent post about your Portuguese Zacarias origins. My sons (Americans) are Robert and Carl Zacarias. Their father Joao da Luz Zacarias (still living and well) is from Faro in the Algarve. Joao's father, also named Joao, was from Almancil. Joao's Zacarias grandfather named Jose, was also from the Algarve -- he was probably a farmer. Joao da Luz is much interested in his Zacarias family; he also wonders if it was Jewish. Can you tell me more about your family --specifically were they were from in Portugal. Any information would be welcome. Thanks!

Hi, my name is Filipa Zacarias and i am portuguese. The 'Zacarias' branch of the family originally came from Belmonte, a well known ancient 'marranos' community in Portugal. 'Marranos' were crypto-jews forced to convert to christianity during the 14th and 15th century in Portugal and Spain. But there are other possilities such as corruption of nick names (like "Zé de Carias" for instance). Most family names were up to two or three generations behind me (i am 31) a fortuitous transmission. Hope this was of any help.

As I told in another message, my last name comes from Kafrun, Syria. It is the translation of Sajur which was the first name of one of my greatgrandfathers.
At least this is the origin of the Zacarias version here in Argentina
Bye
