Re: Williamsport, Pa. Zahns

My husband descends from Johannes Zahn, who came from the Wurrtemberg area of Germany to Lycoming County in the 1820s or '30s. His son, Johann Georg Zahn somehow became George Cahn (similar pronunciation) and his descendants are all Cahns. Johannes also had a son John Zahn and a daughter Barbara, who married Jacob Hauser, and at least 4 other Zahn children. Maybe your Zahns came to Williamsport because they were related to my group of Zahns? I'd love to be able to make a connection. Any other Lycoming Zahns out there?

Brian,

I am related maternally to an Otto Zahn, but I live here in Hockenheim / Reilingen Germany. The original house of Johann and Maria Zahn still stands. It was originally a town fortress that latter became a small working farm in Reilingen. The place is now known as the Wersauer Hoff. I took a photo of the family crest thinking that I may be related, but will need to look for it. If not, I will go take another. Good luck and feel free to write me anytime.
Your posting does not mention location or date, and Joseph is a very common name in the Vogel family.

My family tree lists a Franz Joseph Vogel b. 16 April 1858 in Sarnen, Obwalden, Switzerland. His death date is not recorded in Swiss records, so he may have migrated to another country. His sister was my GGrandmother, (Anna) Regina Vogel b.1863/64 in Sarnen -- she emigrated to the USA via NY in 1881.

Their father was Joseph Xaver Ignatz/"Ignatius" Vogel b. 04 Aug 1830 in Obwalden. Their mother was Aloisia Amstalden b. Feb 02, 1826. They were married 15 May 1854. They were German Swiss Catholics.

Auguste Zahn

My great grandmother Auguste Zahn (possibly Julia Augusta, records vary). Was born 23 Nov 1855 in the area of Pommerania, probably Prussia at the time. She married August Bugs in about 1875, and they immigrated to Hamburg Wisconsin in 1885. The name "Bugs" is almost certainly an "Ellis Island Name" but nobody knows what it was to start with - Buchs, Busch, something along that line?
Does anyone have someone in their family that matches up. I'm stuck.

Unfortunately only a few hundred copies were printed and it's very difficult to get them.

If you are interested, I can send you some scanned pages to the families you are looking for.

There is a book for Marktredwitz, where nearly all families are listed, sometimes back to the 16th century. According to this book, Johann Andreas Zahn (*24 Nov 1799 in Oberredwitz, +5 Sep 1887) was married to Anna Barbara Fickentscher (*13 Nov 1799 in Redwitz, +15 Jul 1849). He was a dyer in Redwitz, house number 77. His father is Johann Conrad Zahn, industrialist in Oberredwitz. Her father is Johann Georg Fickentscher, tanner in Redwitz. There are more information about the 7 daughters and 5 sons.

Johann Conrad Zahn (* about 1762 in Oberroeslau, +13 Nov 1842) married (30 Mar 1789) to Margaretha Barbara Pöhlmann (*16 Sep 1769 in Oberredwitz, +26 Jan 1845, daughter of Johann Poehlmann)

On the back of the picture is written:Anna Flavillah Zahn, Age 6 months
Chas. E. Zahn and Dora Zahn. According to Ancestry she was born in Missouri in 1890. The picture was taken at a studio in Kansas City, MO on March 1st, 1890.
If anyone is interested in this picture, please email me. I will gladly send it to you...it would be a wonderful addition to the Zahn family heirlooms.
lindaleebutt@worldnet.att.net

Hello,
We have a small bookshop in Upstate New York & purchased inventory from a shop outside of Saratoga Springs. In that group of books was a book called "Wedding Blossoms" which turns out to be a book of poems as well as a record of a wedding between George Zahn and Grace Houghton. He was from Castorland (I think), N. Y. & she came from Carthage, N.Y. They were married in Utica in 1910 on 12/8 or 18th.
Do you have any interest in this book?

His profession is listed as Trunk Maker. They had at least four children Valtine Zahn b. 06/1885, Martha Mary Zahn b. 07/1886 and Willie Wallas Zahn b. 07/1883. I am pretty sure all three of these children did not make it to adulthood.
This sounds interesting. I'll check it out when I have time-which never seems to happen.

My Jacob was married to Margaretta, but I think one of their sons was August. This Jacob came here in May 1864 at the age of 38 on the ship Japara from Antwerp. Do this fit with what you know?

Brian,
I have the parents of Andreas Zahn, born in Hockenheim 1789, as Hans Michael and Susanna Elisabeth (Fieser) Zahn. Hans Michael was born in 1759 and his older brother was also named Andreas. Your Andreas had a sister, Anna Barbara born 1784, who is the grandmother of my husband's grandfather, Jacob Zahn. Anna Barbara was married twice.

We have just compiled information on our ancestor Jacob Zahn born in Hockenheim in 1854 and immigrated to the U.S. in 1880 with his wife Marie settling in McGregor, Iowa for most of his life although he and his family were in Canistota, SD from 1901 to 1911 when they returned to McGregor. Jacob was in the King's Dragoons Cavalry prior to his immigration to the U.S. Jacob's lines are to both the Hockenheim Zahns and the Reilingen Zahns.

While in Hockenheim in 1999 we visited with Peter Zahn and were able to purchase a book from him about the Zahns of Hockenheim and immediate area including Reilingen. Although there are references to Zahns in the 1500's, the lineage begins in the 1600's with Johannes Zahn and his wife Catharina Englert.

We woould be interested in sharing information with others who are researching the Hockenheim area Zahns.
Joye

Would need more information in order to make any connections. There are many, many Johann Zahn's listed in the Zahn book. Do you have a second name for him and a month and day of birth? Without those or being able to connect the name of the wife, there is little possibility of finding a connection. The Zahn book for Hockenheim and area is very extensive and includes 7 lines of Zahns. There are many additional surnames listed via marriages, but I do not find a Drick.
Joye
