STEVE & AGNES ZALESKI
Mr and Mrs Steve Zaleski came to Kittson Co, MN fra the state of Illinois where they had lived for some time.

They settled in the township of St Joseph and farmed for a living. There were six children born to them:
Helen Zaleski
John Zaleski
Stella Zaleski ( married Carl LUPINSKI)
Frances Zaleski
Agnes Zaleski
Mary Zaleski

In 1919 Mr and Mrs Zaleski were divorced and the property was sold at auction. Then Mrs Zaleski moved to Minneapolis, taking the younger children with her.

Steve remained in the area and farmed until his death.

His brother John with his wife also settled nearby. They too, had chosen farming as their occupation. During the time he was actively farming, John also found time to be an active school board member and town board member. His wife died in 1918. There were no children born to this union. When he was left alone he decided to sell his property - this he did and moved back to his former home in Illinois.

--page 471 Kittson Co, MN Centennial Book

His companions have not been arrested.
Because of the attack on Zalenski, Mrs. Anna Stoner, wife of William Stoner, saloonkeeper at 3403 Halsted street, was terror stricken last night when she learned that four men were in the basement of the saloon, over which the family lives.
She ran to the Thirty-fifth street police station almost hysterical. The police arrested the men, who said they were tramps and had gone to the basement to sleep.

I've just found this website so I have no idea which John Saleski (Zaleski) you're talking about, but perhaps you can help me. I'm looking for any kind of information concerning John Saleski originally from Austria. Unfortunately, I have no idea when he immigrated to Canada - he's my grandfather and he married Josephine Reiger from Neudorf, Saskatchewan in the early 1900's and had 15 children. He farmed around Neudorf and then retired to Grenfell, Saskatchewan. My grandmother Josephine was from Austria also. I would appreciate any help you could give me, even if it's just suggesting which websites to look at, etc. Thank you for reading this. Best Regards, Marilyn Prentice

Have you looked for the coroner's record? It must exist since it is listed on this database.

http://www.cyberdriveillinois.com/GenealogyMWeb/cccirsrch.ht...

Cook County Coroner's Inquest Record Index, 1872–1911

NAME OF DECEASED VOL. Some did exist but they weren't required. However, there was a need to prove age around the time that Social Security started. That is when a lot of people applied for delayed birth certificates and had to use affidavits from relatives old enough to know a birthdate or church baptismal records or school records, etc. That is apparently what happened in the case of your relatives. This situation is not at all uncommon.

I suggest that you post on the Rootsweb Cook County (where Chicago is) list. It is very active and helpful. Ask for help finding newspaper articles about the murder, for example. Choose the first list on this page. Also ask for lookups in the city directories.

http://lists.rootsweb.com/index/usa/IL/cook.html

Maybe your person had a will. Check with this archive.

http://www.cookcountyclerkofcourt.org/Archives_/Archive_Hold...

http://www.cookcountyclerkofcourt.org/Archives_/Archive_Sear...

Judy
Zaleski/Zalewski Surname Study

Looking for Zaleski/Zalewski researchers! We need your help to find out as much information as we can about the Zaleski surname and where it comes from. Is your Zaleski ancestor related to one of the many Zaleski families being researched by others?

With advances in genetic testing, genealogists now have another tool to aid us in our family history endeavors. The Zaleski/Zalewski Surname DNA Project was recently organized using Family Tree DNA to determine whether there are genetic links between the various Zalewski families throughout the world. It can also serve to validate research within established lines, and to prove or disprove relationship theories when no documentation has been found through traditional research.

If you are researching a Zaleski family, we invite you to participate in our study! The success of this project depends on the number of participants, so please pass this information along to other Zaleski researchers!

More information and a FAQ area can be viewed at the Zaleski/Zalewski Surname DNA Study page at http://www.zalewskifamily.net/wiki/index.php?title=Zalewski_...

Interestingly, all of my uncles had birth certificates which show the name spelled as "Zalewski", which they said was incorrect and they all had to get their name changed to its proper spelling of "Zaleski". Obviously, these kinds of errors have caused obstacles in tracing Zaleski family history.

Sometime between 1900 and 1918 my grandfather, Stephen Zaleski (Stefan) came to the Port of Baltimore, MD, allegedly with his brother or brothers. He stayed in Baltimore and his brothers went elsewhere. It is believed that at least one brother went to Pennsylvanian. His name is unknown. It has been told that the reason they fled Poland-Russia is because they "killed a Russian" soldier or authority that had been siezing their property. Nothing else is known. Stephen was born in 1885. He married Maryanna Kruszewski(nee Kowalska) in 1918. It was said that my grandfather was a "well educated man" although he was resigned to be a laborer in Baltimore. Very secretive family.

I'm sorry, but I do not recognize any of those names. I was researching William Joseph Zeleskey who is my father. He is from Texas. Perhaps we are not related. How many Zeleskey or Zaleski do you think came to America? Maybe our paths cross somewhere. Good luck to you.

Zaleski...or Zaleckis?

In researching my great grandfather, Witold Zaleski, I found that he had always told everyone he was born in Lithuania. However, his name would appear to be Polish. But he was buried in a Lithuanian cemetery near Chicago. The registry showed him as something like Vytautas with a last name of Zaleckis. His gravestone, however, said Witold Zaleski. The only documentation on him that I have been able to find was his inquest record (in 1907 he was shot in the tavern he leased in Chicago) and his death certificate, both of which showed him as William Zaleski. My mother seems to think that Witold may have had relatives. But with a number of names to go by, and because he was shot at a relatively young age after coming over to the U.S., documentation is very hard to come by. We have no idea when he arrived, though my grandfather, his son, looks to have been born here in the U.S. in 1901 (though my great grandmother actually signed his birth certificate about 20 years after his birth!). Argh! Any suggestions on where to go next???? Thanks!

I am looking for anyone who knows of a Stanley Zaleski, who has half-brothers named Peter (b. abt.1884) and Thomas KUBOWSKI, who immigrated to the US abt. 1905-1906 from Poland, and settled in Plains, Pa. area. He was listed in my g-grandfathers obituary (dated: 5/26/1936), as his half-brother. According to some of my relatives, they remember his mother's name as JULIA. We don't know anything else about their parents or any other siblings. If anyone could help, I would deeply appreciate it. Thank you. ~ Cheryl

I'm looking for any information on Frank Zaleski. He was born on 25 February 1883 somewhere in Poland. He and his wife emigrated to Toledo, Lucas County, Ohio with their daughters Catherine and Sophia in 1911. They had five more children; Michael (changed name to Zales), Harold, Jeanne, Steve, and Genevieve. He died in December 1970.

I have one problem - on one census form he is clearly referred to as Mark. I know it is the same person. Has anyone else experienced this while researching?

Any help is appreciated.

My records show that Robert Kilisch married Sophia Zaleski. They lived in Poland. Their son Stanley Kilisch was born in Poland in 1885. Stanley Kilisch came to the US in the early 1900's and married Johanna Pilarski. They lived in Brooklyn, NY. This looks like a match with Susan Haas' information. I have more information if you would like to review.

gdreier@sbcglobal.net

Thanks,
Gary

My wife, born Jacqueline Eva Zaleski, Jan 1947, Roswell NM is searching for info re; her family. Her father was Joseph Rudolph Zaleski b. 30 Apr 1918, CT. Mother was Roseline Moore, b. 30 Sep 1919. Her grandfather Rudolph Paul Z. (wifes' name unknown) immigrated to the US around 1906 and settled in CT (we believe) possibly Naugatuck and had a butcher shop there. There was apparently some kind of falling out in the family relative to Jos. and Rosaline's marriage and contact with that part of the family has been lost. Jacqueline would appreciate any leads to her aunts, uncles and cousins and any other members of the family, thanks.

I have a great uncle named Leroy Zaleski. I don't know if this will help, but I'll tell you what I know about my Zaleski heritgage.

My paternal great-grandfather's name was Vincent Zaleski. He had many siblings. He married a woman named Leona. They lived in the Chicagoland area. They had 3 sons: Paul, Richard, and Leroy. Paul Vincent Zaleski was my grand-father. He married Loretta Gertrude Adamchek (phonetic spelling). He had 3 children: Paul John Zaleski (my father), Nancy Zaleski, and Timothy Jude Zaleski. Paul Vincent Zaleski (my grand-father) was in the military, not sure which branch. He died around 1985. Richard Zaleski I don't know anything about him. Leroy Zaleski I think moved to Hawaii, that's about all I know of him as well.

If you know anything, please contact me. I'm so curious to know where I came from.

Thanks.
