Zambanini are ONLY from Val di Giudicarie Esteriori, Trentino, Italy orignially. Many are still in this area in our villages of Stenico, Seo,Sclemo, Andogno,Tavodo,Dorsino, San Lorenzo in Banale and Molveno and surrounding towns like Ponte Arche etc.. where their descendednts today have moved to. We have a very rare surname compared to other italian surnames. This area was once under the occupation and ownership of the evil Austro-Hungarian empire and people there had Austrian passports prior to 1918 when the Treaty of Versailles gave this area to Italy. The Austrians heavily taxed the area and there was much starvation and "miseria"...many dying of Pellegra (the vitamin B deficiency) because all they had to eat was Polenta. This is why my relatives came to the US in 1901: "to escape the g.d. Austrians" as he used to say.
My great grandfather was Pietro Zambanini of Sclemo and he brought over the whole family which consisted of my great grandmother Maria Fortunata RIZZI Zambanini (from Andogno, just over the hill, and originally Comano, just across the valley), my grandfather: Egilio Giorgio Emmanuelle Zambanini (later changed to "John ZambEnini") and my great uncle: Isidoro Valentino Zambenini. They came to Indiana to work in the coal mines near Terre Haute Indiana (Carbon, Diamond, Perth, Coal Bluff, Fontanet) in 1901. We were the ONLY Zambanini to come to Indiana - all the others went to NY, WVa or PA. I am 46yo and live in Bloomington, IN.I look forward to hearing from any Zambanini or RIZZI (who were from ANDOGNO and COMANO). The Rizzi name is extinct in our valley now and i have never ffound any Rizzi from OUR VALLEY until last week when i found some in NJ and CA. (a small family). The Rizzi surname is extremely common and diffused thruout italy. I am looking for more RIZZI who are from Val di GIUDICARIE (NOT VAL DI NON!!!) or Rizzi from other Valleys in Trentino such as Val di Non or Val di SOLE who might know how the heck our tiny family of Rizzi ended up in Val di Giudicarie in the first place (just about 20 miles south of Val di non and Val di Sole). I am thinking someone long ago must have come down a valley road from Val di Sole or Val di Non and took up residence in COMANO - You can contact me at: LZambeni@alumni.indnana.edu
