I am beginning a search of my family's history. My father's name was Miguel Reyes Samudio (originally Zamudio but it was changed to Samudio by the schools). My father was born in Mexico (maybe in Coahilla or Chihuahua). The exact location is uncertain since he was there only until he was four years old.
My father's father was Gabriel Zamudio. I believe he was born in Spain and that he was half Basque and half Castillian, but this is also uncertain.
The story that I have is that in about 1909 Gabriel and his wife emmigrated from Spain. They passed through Lisbon, Portugal then on a ship that took them to an island in Canada, then to Cuba and then to Mexico where they settled and my father was born. They were trying to get to Arizona where they had some friends (family?) that had emmigrated earlier.
When my father was 4 years old, my grandfather Gabriel left his wife (and maybe other children)in Mexico, took my father and hitched a ride on a freight train to Arizona (maybe Phoenix area). Gabriel found his friends and settled there for a while.
My grandfather remarried and had a child (maybe more) and then died around 1922. After my grandfather's death, my father lived with a German family for several years before going out on his own.
Does this sound like the family history for any other Zamudio families?
My Samudio half-brothers (Mike and Richard) and my half-sister (Olivia) live in the San Diego, CA, USA area.
I live in Portland, OR, USA. I was born in Vallejo, CA, USA in 1947.
My cousin Gabriel Zamudio, named after my grandfather (it is his great-grandfather), has done a great deal of family research, but his results don't match exactly with my father's accounts.
My Spanish is very poor, so if possible English responses are better. However, with the help of my dictionary I can read Spanish.
