As a member of the St Louis Matthew Zavadil family, let me correct this information. Matthew [referred to as "Jr" in Deb's message] was the son of Matthew (aka Matej) and the brother of Anna, William, Joseph, Marie, Albert, John and Lillian. Bob is his son and my father.

I am not a member of the St. Louis Zavadil families but I have a smidgen of info that may be useful to you. I know of two different Zavadil families from the St. Louis area. In one the grandfather, Matthew came to the US from Bohemia.
Then there was a Matthew, Jr. and his children were William,Albert, Joseph and Lillian. There is a Bob Zavadil related to this family who has a photography website on line. You might try looking him up for more info.
Then there is a 2nd Z. family in St. Louis - the Father was a Frank - he had a William and Frank, Jr. they came to St. Louis from Prague in 1905. Frank Jr. married a Cizek and had 3 sons. Frank IV worked for the St. Louis News Dispatch. I hope this helps a little bit.

Do you have any more information on the Lucie Zavadil you mention - who possibly is the originator of many of the Zavadil families? Any help would be appreciated.

For what it's worth, there re a great number of Zavadil listings on the manifests for Ellis Island enterng the US from 1865-1917 and frm the same general areas in Eastern Europe. Most list the name of children traveling with parents and often grandparents and from what exact town or city from which they originated. There is also a faily group of Zavadil's forming on Facebook extending to Australia, Czech Republic, Hungary, USA, England and other countries. believe the originater is still Lucie Zavadil of Prague.

I don't know if your e-mail is still the same since your posting was so long ago. We are also Czech Zavadils. My husband's family came to the US in the Mid 1800's and settled in the Nebraska/North Dakota area. I have researched our side of the family and am now trying to track how many main Zavadil families are in the US. When I first started the project in the 1970's I thought our branch was the only one, then one by one I started adding more families. I am up to 6 or 7 main families - yours in Texas is new to me. I will be happy to exchange more Zavadil information if you are interested. Thanks. DZ

zavadil family tree

If there is anyone with info regarding any Zavadil from St. Louis area i.e. William, Viola, Arnold, etc. please contact me. I am having a great deal of difficulty getting past the basics and am trying to complete a family tree. Thanks a lot!
