Hope this reply gets to you as it is 6 years later. My great, great grandfather was August(ine) Zeleznicky, immigrated from Russia/Poland to the NY & CT area in about 1893. His son from his first marriage was Michael, who changed his last name to Ertman. Michael was my great grandfather. Michael served as a sharpshooter in the 8th Battallion in the Spanish-American war, later was a customs deputy for NY harbor, later moved out to California (early 1900's, San Francisco area). Michael's wife's name was Patricia Louise Curtis (Korte) and his sons were Fred H, Henry, George and Wilbur. Fred H. was my grandfather, my father's father. Michael died in 1932 in a freak accident while on vacation - fell into a ship's hold. I am told that Augustine Z re-married and his 2nd wife's name was Pauline. Their children were Henry (1st marriage, I think), Mary (1st marriage I think - stayed in Russia), Felix (married Helen Mirasewki), Pauline (married Dan Kudlick) and Helen (married Henry John Curtis-Korte). Could we be long lost cousins?! You can reach me as jswiens@comcast.net.

Susan Ertman Wiens, San Jose, CA

Hi, joan. I repsonded to your post because I noticed that your Zelesnik family came from Izby and settled in Bayonne, NJ. You mentioned that they came to Bayonne because relatives were already there.

My great-grandparents (Mary (Dombrowski) and John Popka) also came from Izby and settled in Bayonne for several years. I believe they also went to Bayonne because relatives were there. Since Izby is such a small town, and both our families ended up in Bayonne, I thought perhaps there may be some connection.

I'll check with my grandmother and see if the Zelesnik name rings any bells with her. Thanks.

But in the chance that you do, My great-grandmother Mary (Dombrowski) Popka was born in Izby in 1896 and settled in Bayonne, NJ around 1914 (Not exact on that date). They later moved to upstate NY (Utica area). Perhaps there is some connection here? I believe I remember my grandmother telling me that they moved to Bayonne because they also had relatives there.

Just thought I would throw this info out there.
Thanks for the reply; I would guess that lewis Seleznick was a great-uncle. His son was David O Seleznick the producer.. Note the similarity of given names in the family. Myron was David's brother. My father's name was morris and my middle name is David. In hebrew the name morris is Moses. and Murrary also often has Moses as a Hebrew name. The Zeleznick family in Keiv was composed of 17 children. So this explains your many cousions. My father came to the US in 1916 alone and never indicated that he knew of any relatives other that Seleznick. Good to meet you cousin.

Hi,

yes you are right. I know that in Slovenia it's a kind of dish. Zelnik comes from the slavic word 'slevo' that means settlement. In addition ... Zelnik can also be found in Transylvania (now Romania). Although there's difference in the pronounciation.
Actually, the Zelnik family originates from the former Highland (Felvidék - in Hungarian) where it lives since 800 yrs. according to my genealogy research. It was the name of a river (now called Suchy potok) and a settlement in lipto.
My family moved to Trenchen in the XVth century and most Zelniks live around that place.
It is an old noble family, so if anyone would like to deepen in this subject... I suggest to take a look in archive databases.

Best regards,

Csaba

Hi there,

My name is Csaba Zelnik and I've been dealing with genealogy for 10 yrs now, so know the histors of the family pretty well. The history goes back to King IV.Béla who ruled in the XIII. centuries. Unfortunatelly I do not have an English version to offer (250 pages in Hungarian).
To make it sure: it has nothing to do with Zelenik, Zelenak, Zelnyek, Zelensky, etc. Your name must have changed if you"re sure that once it was Zelnik.
Though it is also a name of a food..., ZELNIK originally was a name of a small river in Lipto.
This is a noble - Highlander - family, did you know?

Csaba
Zeleznik

I am writing to suggest, for the unfamiliar, that there apparently are Zeleznik lineages, though I suspect that even they are one if you look before, say 1800. There are the Catholic (usually Greek or Byzantine Orthodox) families; and there are the Protestant families.

Ultimately, we came from similar regions of Europe, but it may be helpful for you to specify religion when trying to identify your own geneology.

For my family, none of the names and histories here sound familiar to me, and then they all do, but I don't think I can be of much help.

hellow,
my name is Zeleznik Ziga and I live in Slovenia (Slovenia was part of Yugoslavia and before that part of AustroHungerian Monarchy). First I must said that Im not looking for my relatives - I have some in USA but they are migreted with other names.
I want only explain that as I know Zeleznik is typical Slovene name, and of course if you thinking that yours ancestors were migreted in USA from Austria you are probably right - when it was happened in years before 1916. But I doubt that they are from Slovakia.
And yes, first letter Z (in name), have in original Sloven character set a corone and it is pronounced as 'zh' in 'doctor Zhivago' or 'su' in 'measure' or 'leisure'.
Good luck in your searchings!
Ziga

I am trying to get Michael's Social Security application in hope there will be a thread to work with there.

You may be one of those families who came across an uncaring immigration official who just put down what he thought he heard.

Were your father and aunt born in the US? If not they may still have their immigration papers...or that of their parents (I found my husband's maternal grandfather's naturalization papers behind a wedding picture...apparently a fairly common practice)

Good luck...if I find anything more, I'll post it.

My husband's grandmother was Helen Zelesnik and she came from "Austria" around 1905. The village (Izby)is now in Poland on the Polish/Slovakia border. That is the area of Poland that was part of Austria after one of the Partitions. I'm just starting to research his side of the family and don't have much information. She had a sister who also came to this country. They settled in Bayonne, NJ and Helen married Onufrey Lyga who also was from the same area of Poland. Their language was carpathorussian (byelo-russian/low russian/rusyn). Could be from the same area as your ancestors--does anything sound familiar? Their religion was Greek Orthodox.

Hi Joan--Thanks for responding. As far as I know, only a sister and no other siblings came to America with Helen Zelesnik. Her sister's name was Mary and they came in about 1906-1908 from Austria, a very small town/village called Izby, in Poland. It's in the very SE corner of poland on the border. Do you know where your relatives came from. Mary (Sobolak) and Helen (Lyga) went to Bayonne, NJ. I don't know if they had any relatives there, but they must have known someone. She was born in about 1888 and her sister was younger.
Where were your Zeleznik relatives located here? And do you know the name of a village?

Good luck and hope to hear from you. Barb

That's pretty neat. I had always asked, but was told that we weren't related to David O., but that supposedly we came from the same "village" (Kiev) in Russia. As the elders disappear, it's so hard to get answers to things only they would know. I will speak to my dad today though and get for sure the names of my g-grandparents. I saw another post on here that looked even more similar with the lineage of the names; small world, right? Nice to meet you too!

Hi - don't know if you're still looking for answers on Zeleznick or not! But, my maiden name is Selznick, and I believe Lewis was either my great-grandfather, or my great-uncle. The lineage I know of is my deceased grandfather, Murray Selznick, who married my grandmother, Gertrude. I believe I was told as a child that the spelling of our name used to be Zeleznick before the family came from Kiev. Murray was just a baby at the time they arrived at Ellis Island. I believe you've found the right people. Murray and Gertrude had 4 boys, all still Selznick's of course, all still alive, ranging from their 40's-60's- Steven, David, Michael (my dad), and Edward. There's a lot of people in this family; I could go on forever - but the majority reside in FL, CA, then trickles to a few remaining in NJ, NY, PA, and AZ. Please let me know if I can answer anything else for you, or put you in touch with a particular person!

Hi,
Little luck in searching my surname Zelnik. I wondered if the name changed somewhere.
My father John, born Jessup PA from Slovak or Slovenian ancestry, but orphaned about age 6 or 7 (1920). His mom Sophie, father Joseph. Country of origin unknown. I have an aunt Joan or JoAnn Zelnik who married into the Regan family, 2 sons, Walter and Patrick, who were 12 and 9 in 1965 when I met them (NJ).

My grandfather, Eliazer Zeleznick, never left the Kiev area, his son Moishe came to the USA via China then Japan landing in LA area and then settled in Chicago. He left two sisters in Ukraine that migrated in late 1980 to US. I am also looking for the extended family. My father indicated that Lewis Selznick was an uncle.
