Hi. My husband and I are doing some work on the Civil War veterans in the Washta, Iowa area. I found your posts about him on Ancestry. I see that he is listed as a Civil War veteran, but I can find no record of anyone by that name in the Civil War records. Do you have any idea what, Regiment, Company, etc he may have been in? Would it have been in Wisconsin? Any info you have would be appreciated. Thanks.

I unfortunately do not think I have anything that will help you in your search, but my father's name is Frederick Zender also. I thought that was a coincidence. He is still alive and living in Schofield, Wisconsin. His health is not perfect though. He has a bad memory. I have been starting to reasearch my family tree and my relatives also come from Switzerland. I have traced it back to 1786, when Joseph Adam Zehnder was born in Einsiedein, Schwyz, Switzerland. He married someone named Dorothea Steinauer. They both died in Ohio.

Nancy Zender

Most were RK back in those days...especially when the ruler was maybe a German Kaiser or..Friederich III...Roman Emperor, mid-1400s.

I never followed up on the Zender line and by chance saw the family returning to the ZENTNER surname when they got to Galicia.

Lots of info in this Search engine...Saarland, De.and,
Of course Duchy Lothringen .

Adam Zenner, aka Zender *1510. The family surname then became ZENNER !

I realize this is an old posting, but I just found it. You have alot of things that match my family, so I'll list it and if you think it is correct, please let me know.

First of all the last name is spelled Zehnder
She was born in Switzerland about 1869 to Fredrick and Susette Christen Zehnder. They came to America from Switzerland in April 1881. Fred died from sunstroke in July 1881. Susette later married Melchior Suess in 1883.
There was an older boy Jacob (Jake) Christen, he married Christina Klass Gross and had one son Carl.

Then Elise (called Lizzie) born about 1869
Mary "Marie" born July 28, 1870....Married a Matter
Rosa Zehnder died June 16 1889
Fred Zehnder born April 14, 1876
then my great grandmother Louise Susette Zehnder born May 4, 1879 Louise married William Henry Gross
Lizzie married Edward H. Bohlman son of Henry and Sophia Frankie (I believe that was her name)Bohlman. I am not sure what year they were married or where they were married. I can't seem to find any of that info. Edward Bohlman was born June 11, 1865 in St. Louis Missouri and died April 21, 1926 in Catawissca, Franklin, Missouri and was buried in St. Louis, MO. They had the following children: Edward, Nelda, Alice, Rose, Leslie and Raymond.
Not necessarily in that order. I have alot of missing information and would love to fill in the blanks.
Thank You
Sally Peiffer

It looks like you have found my Margaret Zupp. The Zupp family did live in Hillsdale Michigan for a while. Peter Zupp was Margaret's brother. who served in the Ohio Regiment. Other siblings were Christina, Caroline, C.C. (my gggrandfather),, Henry and John. I believe Elizabeth died in Ohio and the father, Peter died in Michigan. Thanks for your help! Please let me know if you have further information.

I have been doing research on Christopher C. Zupp for someone in Sioux City, Iowa.
(C.C.Zupp, Civil War Veteran) ~ the son of George Peter Zupp.
C.Z. Zupp came to Ida County, Iowa, in 1868 and settled in
Douglas Township with a few other Civil War veterans.

I have been researching the "Ish" family. I have a Margaret Anne Zupp, daughter of Peter and Elizabeth, who married Nicholas Ish. My Margaret was born in France and died in Hillsdale County Michigan. I have found a Mary E. Zupp, w/o Peter Zupp buried in Lutheran cemetery, Tymochtee twp, Wyandot Co., Ohio. She died 10 May 1849. I have not found when or where Peter died. In the Hillsdale County death book, Margaret's parents were both listed as born in France, but that information is only as good as the person who supplied it.

Hi Christine,

I am related through marriage to a Nicholas Zender born March1858. He married Catherine Mann born April 12, 1854 (nee Roos) my 2nd great grandmother. They resided on East Delaware Place in Chicago. Their Children were Catherine (Paul Plant) children Paul Jr. and Virginia, Christina (I knew her as aunt Bess) her letter to one of my aunts got me started in the family search, I dont think she ever married. Then Joseph and Mathew, whom if we are related, it would be through one of them. I have no information on their children.

I don't have much else on Nicholas other than he drove horse teams in Chicago, my father remembers him as a child ... said he belives he was a steam ship captain or worked on a steam ship ... he isnt real sure.

Let me know if any of this fits and if there is any relation ... I would love to fill in the Zender, Plant lines if we are indeed related.

Thanks,

Ray
