I simply would like to say that all I know is that my Great Grand Father was Phillip Zenner who was born in Dubuque Iowa, and that his parents were from Luxembourg, he married my Great Grandmother Emily Craft from Berne Switzerland.
My Grandfather was born in Portland Oregon - Arnold Steven Zenner, and then my father Richard Arnold Zenner, and then myself, Lance Richard Zenner. We have 5 generations of Zenner's who have lived out west here in Portland , Oregon.
I do know that our origins come from Luxembourg.
My Grandfather who was born here in Portland in 1903 had a story that he told me about two Zenner twins who came over on a boat from Europe and had split up once they arrived in New York. The story goes that they never made contact with each other after that. So we have assumed that we surely have Zenner relatives floating around the eastern half of the U.S. at least.

I am tracing David Zenner b1819 who appears on later census in Northumberland at Newcastle upon Tyne. The family connection is son Martin Zenner B1849 Newcastle upon Tyne. Martin's son David CarterZenner B 1878. This David Carter Zenner was my partner's grandfather. The census of 1871 etc show both David and Martin born in Bavaria. But there is a David Zenner shown born in St Andrews Newcastle. But David Zenner B 1819 was definitely born in Bavaria.Any help appreciated.

Hi Deborah;
I am working on a BISSEN family at the Houston Co., MN village of Feeburg (near Caledonia). Could be just coinkydink, buuut...

Peter BISSEN b. 1844 along with his father, Theadore BISSEN b. 1811 settled in Freeburg after 1875. They had briefly settled at Johnsburg, Mower Co. MN after leaving Lemont, Cook Co. IL. Peter m. Katherine PETERS, of Lemont, in 1871. (Peter is the brother of my ggm, Anna Marie BISSEN KRELL, b. 1846.)

These BISSENs are Luxembourgers, from the Brachtenbach area and nearby Daleiden, Germany.

Your Anne-Marie does not appear in this line, even though I have a reliable genealogy going back to Johann BISSEN b. 1775.

Do you know what part of Luxembourg Jean Peter and Anne-Marie were from?

If you want to learn more about the BISSEN line in Luxembourg, I suggest you contact Chuck Van Den Eeden. We worked at connecting our two lines a few years ago, without success. I don't have an address at hand, but I'm sure you can get it from RSL.

Apologies for the multiple responses. I am reading your posts one at a time and replying. I think there is a connection! Our family records say that Otto Joseph Zenner, b. 01DEC1880 at Buffalo NY, married Pauline Roth 04FEB1802. Otto was the son of Joann Zenner II (later known as John P.) and Magdalena Geisendoerfer. As of May, 1925, he was living in Niagara Falls NY. Magdalena died 08SEP1881, and is buried in Pine Hill Cemetery (Buffalo?). John P. remarried, on 15JAN1883, to Barbara Louise Huppuch.

We have always thought the name Zenner was German, but no body has tracked the family history back before the Zenner's came to Australia.
If you are interested I would be interested in talking to you about the Zenner ancestory. If not, I'd be interested in talking to another "Catherine Zenner".

A little about myself. I turned 40 yesterday, I am an accountant. I have 3 children. I live my life.
Hi, thanks for replying! I don't have a birth certificate for Anne-Marie BISSEN, so I can't be sure. Her son (and my great-grandfather), J. P. ZENNER, listed her birth date as 1840 with no month.

The only "documentary" evidence I have of her possible birth year is from her gravestone in Luxembourg. I've attached a photo of it. It's in french, but translated it states that she died on May 25, 1915, at 70 years of age. According to this, she may actually have been born in 1845.

So, let me know if this fits better with the info. you've found.

Thanks!

Deborah Babb

My Grand father Jempi had 6 son's... One of which must be your grandfather.. Harrold is my father... but uncles include Paul, Peter, Joe, Andy, and Al (deceased). J. Peter lived long enough to meet my youngest sibling... Dana Rian Zenner born in 1980. I presently farm in Craigmont Idaho.. About 5 miles west of Uncle Joe's farmstead ( referred to as the Breier Place)... Yes much sounds familiar.............

John Zenner (1826-1892) came to US in 1853 with his mother and sister.

He married Catherine Geissel and they had 13 children in the St Cloud, Minnesota area.

I am trying to make some contact with relatives in Germany. He was born in Ferschweiler, and his gradfather, Nicholas appears to have been from Echternacht. Anyone out there working on the same family???

Our family lived in Ferschweiler after about 1810, but before that they attended church at Echternach very near the Luxembourg Border.

My ancestors include Zenners from known places in Luxembourg.

Your post needs more information: immigration to where in U.S.; names and dates; other known info about origins. How do you know your Zenners are from Lux?

Please take a look at this:
http://genforum.genealogy.com/zenner/
See if any of the posts ring a bell.
Let me know.
Mary

Diekirch, Lux, Zenner families

Good! My family is also from Canton Diekirch, from such towns as Reisdorf, Hoesdorf, Bigelsbach, etc. I haven't had time to find Beauforte yet, but all those towns are just stones throws from each other. My gggrandfather was Nicholas Jacob Zenner who came to Chippewa Co., WI, around 1867 and married a Bohemian named Mary Migel. His parents were John (Jean) Zenner and Catherine JUNGELS from Canton Diekirch. Their family was large and 5 of the children settled in Chippewa Co.

I have found so much information since I learned to locate Lux microfilms and read the essential info from them. Let me know if you have not discovered these sources of data. You will need to do that if you want more on your family. It would be nice to add cousins!
Mary C.

Mabel, (I can't wait for a reply) you will want to go to (1st URL)

http://hometown.aol.com/VailCorp/lux11.html

There, click on Tables Decennales, about middle of page or (2nd URL)
http://www.lib.stthomas.edu/special/lux/LuxDec.htm

At the bottom of that page, hit Proceed button
Type in Zenner and pull down Beauforte. You'll probably get an error reading? Then go to each Canton and read the results. These are only listed as 1853 to 1863, so don't give up. Your Zenners could be living in a very nearby village. You can try any surname here and see what pops up all around the country.

Now go back to Tables Decennales (the 2nd URL above) and at the bottom, you'll see the phrase for Parish/Civil records. Click it.
At the bottom of that page, hit Proceed button and you'll be able to pull up records for EVERY POSSIBLE little town and village.

Pull down Beauforte in Canton Echternach and voila! lists of every possible event and the microfilm available at the LDS.

Don't forget to read all the info about the Tables Decennales. Too bad they only put the one 10 year cycle on the website, but it does give you a good feel for who lives where.

This is what I have discovered: one life time is not enough for all the fun I have doing this.
Also, note the recent post by Chris about his Zenners attending church at Echternach. Could be a connection there, too!
Good luck and have fun. Let me know what pops up.
Mary C.

Lux microfilm availability

Mabel, I've only found 2 sources of these microfilms: LDS which loans the films AT their sites and Luxembourg City archives if you're in the position to visit there. Apparently ALL the records of Lux were filmed, so no additional research is really necessary.

I have many Zenner cousins around Chippewa Co., but no contact with anyone in the Lux area. It such a small country...

You might be interested in reading these:
http://www.rootsweb.com/~luxwgw/research.htm
http://hometown.aol.com/VailCorp/lux11.html
and The Institute Grand Ducal which is
http://www.igd-leo.lu/
which is one I watch. They publich Genealogies of different towns; the most recent is "Genealogy of Stadtbredimus" in which they literally connect together all the people of the town from the films.
Great, huh? That's what we need for our towns! Bookmark this site. They've already done Remich, Wellenstein, Remerschen Burmerange. These were heavy emigration sites at one time which is why the authors chose them.
Anyway, keep reading and learning. And update this list when you can.
Mary C.

ZENNER, J. Peter connected to Caledonia, MN ZENNERS

My great-grandfather was J. Peter (Jempi) ZENNER (19 Jun 1885 - 21 Jan 1981).
His parents were Jean Peter ZENNER (8 Jan 1838 - 21 Nov 1900) and Anne-Marie BISSEN (1840 - May 1915).
Jean Peter Zenner's mother was Barbara FORCEE.

My g-grandfather J. Peter Zenner left Luxembourg to work in France and then England. He came to the U.S. in 1908, settling in Idaho where he remained until his death in 1981.

He states in his biography, "[Great?] Uncles Peter, Nickolas, and J. Peter came to Caledonia, MN, in about 1860...Uncle John Peter had learned the tinsmith trade and moved to Chicago, IL." "We were there several times and some of them here [in Idaho]." To me, that means that my great-grandfather visited with his Zenner relatives in Caledonia, MN.

Does any of this sound familiar?

Jean Peter ZENNER & Anne-Marie BISSEN were from Diekirch, Luxembourg if I'm not mistaken. That's where they're buried at least.

Hi,

I am researching this line. I my 4th Great grandmothers were Zenners, married to Joannes Redels/Rheles/Reles of Minden which it just south of Echternatch on German side of the border.

I have many Zenner parish records from all over this area, including Fershweiler. The Zenner family in this area appears a Vogtei family in the book, Shankweiler 1697 to 1899 by Werner Naumann. Shankweiler I believe is some kind of commune (so included many more towns than Schankweiler) and the lands were owned by a monstary, I believe in Echternatch at some point. It's in german and not easy to translate.

A vogtei was someone who handled the "blood punishment" when a crime was committed. Authority given to vogtei by the church, who by their oath to God could not hand out blood punishment.

This area is refered to bit castle country in the book. I researched this and found it was an area of many duchies that developed from lay nobles as they grew powerful thru the risen of the Hansectic (means guild) League. In order to try gain control the lands were given to the church.

The book is available on microfiche from the LDS. Unfortunately when we looked at this book we did not know we were related to Zenners.

If you interested please contact me.

Janice

Debi I came across your posting with a reference to Anne Marie BISSEN of Vichten, Lux. - I know of one or more but not with an 1840 birth. I am researching the BISSEN name in Vichten and Goesdorf [not Gilsdorf] and thought there might be a connection.

Are you firm on the May 1840 birth?

Chuck Van Den Eeden
Lombard, Illinois
Hi Gary I am still out here pluging away at the BSSEN surname. I came across Debi's posting re Anne Marie Bissen today and also found your response.

I recently had some good fortune and found a person in Vichten, Lux. who had access to some detailed records and it now appears our BISSENs are not related even though Goesdorf and Brachtenbach are about 12 km apart. I am having a hard time accepting it but it appears true at this time.

I recently have been touch with your Hawaii Bissens on another matter.

I have several Anne Marie Bissens but not with the 1840 birth year
I note Debi indicates the birth in Victhen and death in Gi[?]lsdorf, Lux. [Goesdorf?] so I thought there might be a connection w/ my research and will check with Debi re birth year for Anne

Best wishes to you

Chuck Van Den Eeden
Lombard, Illinois
