Hi - I've done lots of research on the Zeoli's in America including the ones in Westport, CT. The township of Saugatuck was even referred to as Little Italy. Though there are many Zeoli families spread across the U.S., all of them came from the area near Santa Croce del Sannio, Italy which is about 45 miles n.e. of Naples.

His great-grandfather, Frank (Francesco) Zeoli had an older brother named Joseph (Giuseppe), b. 12 Jan. 1848 in Santa Croce Italy.
Dear Maureen,

I'm just checking in with the ancestry message board and saw your post. My grandmothee was Marie Faletra, your grandmother's sister. I have some old photos of the Picciutos and Gattos that I'd love to share. Do yiu have any Faletra or Zeoli photos, or any other old family photos. If you'd like, please write me directly at faletram@gmail.com.

I grew uo two doors down from the old Zeoli homestead next to the Clapp Memorial Field on Broad Street, and I remember that old house well. I even have a copy of a photo that fell out of the walls of that old house when they demolished it -- it's of Mario Zeoli, I think. Anyway, I look forward to hearing from you.

Antonio Zeoli

Greetings!

I'm researching lineage on my father's side. I have relatively little information. My paternal grandfather was Antonio Zeoli b: 3 Dec 1903 d: 23 Sep 1989 in Palm Beach, Fl. m: Ariel Borison. Resided in Lantana Fl from 1939 until his death.

He had at least two sisters: Pauline L (Paulina/Pasqualina?) b: 23 Aug 1916 in MA. d: 4 Jun 1986 in Walpole, MA m: John Penza. Resided in Walpole, MA from 1935 until her death. I believe there was also a sister Angelina, but I have no information on her other than word of mouth.

Again, word of mouth says their father was Joseph (Giuseppe?), born in Italy, more than likely in the Benevento region.

If anyone has any information, I would most appreciate it. I've found Naples ship manifests and NY census records that are interesting, but nothing even remotely conclusive. Thanks!

Mike

Video of Zeoli farm in Santa Croce

My husband Mel Zeoli came across this really neat video shot by a guy named Walter Fitzgerald. He is related to the Zeolis but through a female ancestor, thus the name. He and his (I think) aunt visited Santa Croce a few years back to search for their Zeoli roots and stayed at the Zeoli Farmhouse. We have written to Walter and are waiting to hear back if it is privately owned, a B&B or what. Anyway, the link is - http://vimeo.com/user477296. Enjoy.

Santa Croce to America (MA, CT, WV, RI, CT, NY)

My husband's ZEOLI ancestors came to Weymouth, MA from Santa Croce, Benevento province in Italy via NYC. I have the death certificates on the Weymouth branch and am currently awaiting microfilm from Salt Lake City of the civil records in Santa Croce so will soon have more to share. As many of the Zeolis from Santa Croce went to NY, WVa, CT, and RI, I will try to gather all the info I can and share as requested. Unfortunately the LDS records from Santa Croce stop in 1860. I am very happy to share any and all information I gather. Our immigrant ancestor was Francesco (Frank) Zeoli and his wife Rosa Gioia who followed Franks' older brother Joseph to settle in Weymouth.

Janice Zeoli
janzie55@yahoo.com

Good reading relating to Italian miners in WVa. - look up info on the Monongah Mine explosion in 1907. 3 of the miners killed were named Zeoli and 13 of the dead miners were supposed to be from Santa Croce. "Our" Zeolis went to Weymouth, Mass. but those killed in the Monongah mine in 1907 were most probably related in some way. Anyway, it's a tragic story. They don't even know how many people were killed - official # was 352 but there were many more in the mine who were not listed. So many of those killed were Italian immingrants.

Zeolis from Weymouth, Mass

Hi, My name is Janice Zeoli. My husband, Mel Zeoli, Jr. was born in Weymouth as was his dad Mel, Sr. and his dad Antonio (Tony). Tony's two older brothers Sebastian and Carmine were born in Santa Croce del Sannio, Italy and came to America in 1893 as young children with their parents Francesco (Frank) and Rosa Gioia Zeoli. I'm thinking Frank had already come over about 1889 to get established then went back to get them. Frank was born about 1855 and Rosa was born about 1862, both probably in Santa Croce. I got their death certificates from the Weymouth town hall that say Frank's parents were Antonio Zeoli and Maria Antonia Testa. Rosa's dad is listed as Carmine Gioia and mom's last name is Anzorino. Francesco Zeoli had an older brother named Joseph who also lived in Weymouth where he and his wife raised 4 kids. There was yet another Italian immigrant in Weymouth named Oreste Zeoli but I haven't determined what, if any, his connection is. Mel and I are researching his Zeoli roots in Santa Croce del Sannio, Italy and will update info as we find out new stuff. - Janice Zeoli (janzie55@yahoo.com)

Mel said the Zeoli branch in Whitman are all his uncle Frank's kids. Frank had a brother Anthony but he is still alive and living in Hawaii.

Hi Michael,

My mother's mother was Clementina Zeoli from Weymouth. I remember the Faletras living on the other side of her house at 505 Broad St. Weymouth. My mother's name was Lena Barbuto. The other siblings were Antonio (Skeets), Frances Frances Chella, Rose DeSenzo of Rockland, Theresa Fucci, Guido and Mario. Mario is the only surviving one. He moved to California many years ago.

I think that I would be able to recognize a picture of my grandmother.

Her brother was named Dominick Picciuto, her sisters were Clara Mezzeti of Quincy, Pasqualina Gatto of Weymouth and Marie Faletra of Weymouth.
Her husband was Carmine (Jack). They owned the Jumbo Market on Broad St. in Weymouth.

I have a picture of Rose and Anthony taken on October 23, 1941 and 1944 school pictures of Anthony and Charles.

Maureen Barbuto Welstead
mjwelstead@comcast.net

The Jospeh to which Shanna is referring died in 1973, at age 63. I have photos of Nicola and Angela Marie, with their children. However, the family portrait I have was taken before Joseph was born, so he isn't in that particular picture; but my mother can point out Frank and Victor, Joseph's brothers.

Can you tell us more about your relatives? You seem to have a more-than-coincidental family naming convention.

-Ed

Hi Shanna,
My grandfather is Joseph Zeoli (one of Nicola's children).
Joseph Zeoli married Mary Fiero and had two children; Nicholas and Marilyn (my mother). Joseph died in 1973, when I was 5 years old. My grandmother, Mary, died in February 1999.
Nicholas, the son of Joseph and Mary, married Mari (don't know her maiden name) and had one daughter, Hiromi. Nicholas died early, in his 40's of cancer.

I am aware of Joseph's brothers, Victor and Frank. I found out recently that Rosa was born and died at two years of age in Italy.
I would like to hear back from you. Take care!
-Ed
