We were in Sohnstten, DE in Sept 2009. This was our 3rd visit to the village. One of the gentlemen that helped us with the Haltiwangers is writing a book on the decendents of families that left Sohnstetten and came to SC. If anyone is interested helping us gather families for him to contact, we would appreciate it. Thank you Betty Haltiwanger Seabrook and Lynn Haltiwanger

ZIEGLERs in Ontario

I am having a really hard time tracking down my immigrating ancestor's early Canadian info... and his parent's names. I know that he (Henry G.) stated that he came to Canada in 1846. I haven't found an obit. His marriage was by banns, so no parent info there. I haven't found him on the 1851/2 census (not in Canada west or east).
So I am beginning to work on his siblings in hope that they will lead somewhere. They are: Aron, Albert, and Lizabeth. Does anyone have these names in their tree? Any suggestions on finding parent's names? I can't even be positive that he came over with his parent's; in 1846 he was 12. He could have come alone, I suppose.
Thanks in advance for your thoughts!
Shawna

Ana (Ida) Ziegler (1907-1977)

Hi!
I'm looking for family connections and more information about Ana (Ida) Ziegler.
Ana was one of 13 children. After her father was killed, her mother fled Russia with the kids to the USA, and did live in New York at some point. Some of Ana's sisters were Fanny, Sally, Manny, and Lena.
Ana married and had a son named Samuel in the 1920s. In the 30s she married Bernard Heller and they had 2 children, George and Marilynn. Samuel died young in an accident, I believe.
At some point Ana changed her name to Ida (I'm not sure when or why).

Any help would be great. Thanks!

Try this.....
- use the advance search page
- 1st line change "all words" to "exact phrase" & type in Henry Ziegler in blank field beside it
- in the field after the blank one where it says title change that to text

Now hit search & this should pop up the references you want.

I see Sask. has an oline BMD index but they're only up to 1917 on their deaths so far - how annoying is that!

Cheers

Randall was allowed to plead guilty of murder in the second degree because of his youthful age and received a life sentence.
We are trying to find out more of the details of this event.
ZEIGLER Kitchner, Canada & Oden, MI

I have posted here before, but I am trying again with better info:
I am researching an elusive family line: a line of Zeiglers born in Germany (Wurttemburg?) that immigrated to North America. I know that they lived in the Waterloo / Kitchner area of Ontario and near Oden, Michigan (Emmett County). The line I am working on goes like this:
Henry & Margaret > Christian & Elizabeth (nee Horn) > Herman & Helen (nee Pope) > Luman & Phyllis (nee Norton).
Luman and Phyllis are my grandparents.
I don't know their point of entry. It appears as though Christian is already born when Henry and Margaret emigrate.
Does this line ring a bell with anyone?
Thanks in advance.
Daryll,
The only thing that I am 100% positive about Henry's death is that he in fact did die, and he did so in 1922 in Saskatchewan. No obit, no place of burial.

I know nothing of Aaron, Albert or Elizabeth except their names. This information came to me from what I now realize to be an unreliable source, so this requires further investigation.

When Henry married, it was done by banns, so would there be any other marriage record? The minister was a travelling one, so no specific church is associated with him. This informaion comes from the library at Kitchener, ON.

They did move from the Waterloo region. They came to Michigan for a short time, and then moved on to Saskatchewan in 1910.

I will begin searching for a death record, but from what I have been told by a few Canadian researchers is that death records are sketchy at best.

Shawna

Hi Darryl,
Thanks so much for your thoughts on this. Your assumption is correct, this is the family I am researching. I didn't want to post an overwhelming amount of info, so I did mostly the names to see if there was anyone who might have some insight. That was the whole reason for the posting - I have no information on Aron, Albert or Lizabeth.
I have been aware of Ludwig. I wondered about their relationship.... their ages are very close to one another. Close enough that I would probably need the months of their birth to determine if they are in fact brothers. I have thought that they might be cousins? Do you have any suggestions on how I might verify their connection? Was it from Ludwig's marriage record that you got the information about his parents and his birthplace?
I appreciate your help.
Shawna

I am having a really hard time tracking down my immigrating ancestor's early Canadian info... and his parent's names. I know that he (Henry G.) stated that he came to CA in 1846.
Shawna

Jenny, I have the marriage record of Caroline Meyer and Bernard Ziegler and the deed which Bernard gave his property to Frank, I believe. I'd have to look it up. No, I haven't done any research on the Meyers as they are not directly related. But the name Oswald interests me as Bernard's first wife, Magdalene was an Oswald and she had a son, Jacob, when Bernard and she were married. So that would have not been her maiden name. Maybe there's a connect in the Oswald side. I have some of the census for Bernard when he was in this country. You can email me direct. bjroberson@hotmail.com Be sure to put Ziegler in the subject.

Shawna

You are not really giving a lot of detail for us to help you. Where did he live? Who did he marry? When did he die? Any details about Aron, Albert or Elizabeth.

I am assuming you are talking about Henry G. Ziegler who married Margaret Kress in 1854 in Kitchener. If so One of witnesses was a Ludwig Ziegler of Woolwich. Henry was known as Henry G. G is usually the name of the maiden name of the mother.

Ludwig married in 1859, his birthplace given as Neidenstein, Baden, Germany and his parents were George Ziegler and Katherin Gasset. Which would fit in as the G. parent of Henry G.

Henry G. Ziegler named one of his children. Lewis which is the English version of Ludwig.

Ludwig and Henry G. are possibly brothers.

Darryl
My father's dad Carl Ziegler died when my dad was roughly 2 years old. I really don't get any information from my father cause he just doesn't talk about it and doesn't think it really matters knowing about him. I though on the other hand is interested. Now all I know is that my father was born in Baltimore, MD and his brother John who is a year older. Carls wife's name was Sophie. Carl was an only child I did find that out and we have family by the name of Mayo I want to say or something like that name. I could be wrong about that. Well anyhow, if anyone out there has some information on Carl and our family, could you reply.

Thank you for reading.

Greg

I am looking for information you might have about Sebastian Ziegler (b 20 Oct 1894 in Elsass, Russia). I think his parents were Johannes Ziegler and Johanna Mack, but that is all I know at this point. He and his parents came to America some time in the late 1800s or early 1900s. They ended up settling in Karlsruhe, ND. He married Margaret (or Margaretha) Koble. I know more about what came afterwards, but as far as how to go further back, I am stuck.
Dan
We exchanged some information on Ziegler & Moerlein back in September. Margaret Moerlein was married to James B. Ziegler. His father was Phillip - I assume this Phillip is the one you thought to have been married to Margaret. I have the dates, etc. on James, as well as all conections on Margaret, if you want them. I have all of this Moerlein branch from immigration to current, all documented. I'm at a point where I'd like the connection details regarding Marjorie Cunningham, and the rest of this branch. Are you related to this intersection of the Zieglers with the Moerleins? If so, we are probably related and I'd appreciate the branch connections back to you.
Dan
You asked for info regarding Christian Moerlein. Following is a short history. You do not indicate where you live now, but do you know that a line of Christian Moerlein beers has been re-introduced (again). It have proved to be a "huge hit" in the Cincinnati area according to my sister still living there. If you would like any further info, let me know.

Name: Christian Moerlein Manufacturer of Lager Beer, was born in Truppach, Bavaria, May 13th, 1818, and is the son of Conrad Moerlein. After attending the village school until he had attained his thirteenth year, he learned the trade of blacksmithing, and engaged in farming with his father. His uncle being a brewer, he obtained a knowledge of the brewing business, which proved ultimately to be of great service to him. At eighteen years of age he began life on his own resources as a blacksmith, and during the succeeding five years worked in that capacity for a Prussian dollar per week. Later, with a hundred guilders given him by his father, he started on foot to Bremen, with his tools and knapsack, and after travelling a distance of three hundred miles, reached his destination in safety. On St. John's day the ship "Rebecca" was in port, and advertised to sail within three weeks for America. While awaiting its departure he worked at his trade, and thus secured sufficient money to enable him to defray his passage expenses. After a journey of fifty-eight days, he arrived at Baltimore with a cash capital of twelve dollars, out of which sum he paid eight dollars for a passage by canal and rail to Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. But failing to secure work in this place, he started on foot for Wheeling, succeeding, however, in finding employment at Hendricksburg, Belmont county, Ohio, at seven dollars per month including board, which salary was increased afterward to fifteen dollars per month. He landed in Cincinnati in 1842, where he was employed first in digging a cellar at fifty cents per day. In the following October he commenced business for himself on Finley street, and in 1853 sold his blacksmith shop, and formed a copartnership with Adam Dillman, in connection with whom he erected a small brewery. March 1st of the same year the partners sold their first beer. A. Dillman dying in the ensuing May, he conducted the business alone for one month, and then formed a partnership with Conrad Windisch, a competent brewer. In 1855 the manufacture of common beer was abandoned, and that of lager beer initiated. During the winter of this year the product was about 2000 barrels, while, in 1866, 26,500 barrels were brewed. In September of the latter year he purchased, for the sum of $130,000, the entire interests of his partner, and two years afterward erected the main building of his present works. To the nine cellars then constructed, with a capacity of 9000 barrels, he has added four additional ones which, with the main structure, give a total capacity of 150,000 barrels. The building is 225 feet by 110, and four stories in height. In 1872 ten other cellars were built, with a capacity of 1000 barrels each, making a total capacity of 35,000 barrels. He has floor room for 125,000 bushels of barley, and his cooperage is done on the premises. He employs constantly a force of from 80 to 100 men, while from 35 to 50 horses are required to do the hauling for the establishment. In 1864 he erected three large houses on the corner of Fifteenth and Elm streets, under which he built two cellars capable of storing about 3000 barrels of beer. From 1866, when his sales amounted to about 25,000 barrels, down to the present time, his annual increase has been about 19,000 barrels. The sales of 1872 amounted to over 40,000 barrels; the sales of the current year amount to over 70,000 barrels. His extraordinary success is due mainly to inflexible integrity, unusual financial abilities, and a thorough knowledge of all the details connected with his vast business. His superb mansion, 168 Mulberry street, Cincinnati, is one of the noted ornaments of the city. In 1873 he was elected one of the Trustees of the Water Works. July 4th, 1873, the first building, insured as a malt house, fell from the weight of grain, over 20,000 bushels of malt being stored there. A new one was then immediately erected, at a cost of over $80,000, with a capacity of 100,000 bushels. He was married in 1843 to Sophia Adam, formerly of Strausburg, France, who died during the cholera season of 1849, leaving three children, one of whom died in the same year, and another in 1853. John Moerlein, the surviving child, is now engaged in business with his father. He was again married, in the fall of 1849, to Barbara Ochalso, a native of Bavaria, by whom he has had nine children, seven of whom are now living. George Moerlein and Jacob Moerlein, by his second wife, and John, by his first wife, are now engaged in business with him.

John had several children including my Grandfather Laverne (1881-1939) and Sarah (Sadie) Caldwell Ziegler (1871 - ?).
John's father was William (1821-1898. William Caldwell married Sarah Jane Beatty and probably lived in the Butler County PA area during the middle 1800's. One of William's children, Martha, married Peter Noah. One of his grandchildren, William, married Birdie Pitcairn.
At a family reunion, many years ago in the Pittsburgh area I met many of the Zieglers. If you happen to have Ziegler - Caldwell heritage, I would love to know more.
