Carl Christian Ziehl (aka Charles Ziehl) was born on November 23, 1829 in Locknitz, Uckermark, Brandenburg, Prussia to Christoph Ziehl (born 1794) and Charlotte Jagow. Census records indicate that Carl immigrated to the United States in 1852. In Niagara County, New York, he joined other “Old Lutherans” who had migrated from Bradenburg, Germany as early 1843. Carl died of Tuberculosis on May 15, 1901 in Pendelton, Niagara County, New York and was buried on May 17, 1901 in Martinsville, Niagara County, New York.

Carl married Maria Friederike Drager-Reck (aka Reek) on April 25, 1855 at Holy Ghost Lutheran Church in Bergholz, Niagara County, New York. Census and Church records indicate she was born between 1831-1834 in Prussia. Marie’s marriage to Carl Christian Ziehl was probably her second. Their marriage record at Holy Ghost Lutheran Church in Bergholz, and birth record for son Ferdinand Friedrich Ziehl, note her name as "Maria born Drager". Other records their spell her married name as Reck (rather than Reek as many researchers state). This indicates that Maria was first married to a man with the last name of Reck and that her maiden name was Drager (or Draeger). Maria Ziehl's death record at St. Paul Lutheran Church in Martinsville gives her birth year as 1834 (no specific date) and confirms her death date of December 16, 1869.
