Erma Amelia Lena Smith, the daughter of Otto and Lucille (Ufer) Ziemer was born May 25, 1910 in Freemont Township, Minnesota and departed this life on Sunday, May 8, 2005 at the Good Samaritan Center in Estherville, Iowa at the age of 94.
She received her education in Huntington schools.
On February 7, 1929, Erma was united in marriage to Loyal Smith in Dunnell, Minnestoa. Following their marriage, the couple farmed in the Wallingford area until 1940, when they moved into Estherville. Mr. Smith died in 1969. Erma then worked at Helping Hands Daycare Center and she was also a cook for Head Start for many years. For hobbies, she enjoyed quilting, gardening, sqaure dancing, and crocheting.
Erma was a member of Immanuel Lutheran Church, Ladies Guild, Lois Circle, Estherville Garden Club and she was a volunteer at the Dinner Date Program.
Left to cherish Erma's memory are her daughters, Carol Shipley and her husband, Rolland and Lavonne Kirk and her husband, Jim all of Estherville; 10 grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren and 3 great-great grandchildren; brothers, Elmer Ziemer and his wife, Flora of Rice, Minnesota; Marsellius "Bubbles" Ziemer and his wife, Sally of Minneapolis, Minnesota; sister-in-law, Gloria Smith of Milford and many nieces and nephews.
She has been preceded in death by her parents, her husband, infant daughter, Lucille Rebecca; sons, Larry and Frank, grandson, Jay Smith, granddaughter, Rhonda Shipley, and four sisters and three brothers.
