Question about the surname Zirkus?

I have been doing a little research on my grandmother's family. She is a native of Germany and her maiden name is Zirkus. Until the early 1990's I always thought the name was of German origin, when I looked it up in a book of German surnames I was not able find it, even though the word does exist in the German language. The families in Germany with the surname Zirkus all live in the city of Bruehl in the vicinity of Cologne and are Roman-Catholics, but live nowhere else in the country

The first time I was able to find any reference to another person with the name Zirkus was at the yadvashem.org site and there were many with all sorts of variations. I saw that Zirkus was one of the common Jewish surnames of Galicia in the book by Dr. Alexander Beider.

A cousin of mine has found that none of the Zirkus families were in the Bruehl 1809 census. So they must have moved there after. My question is Zirkus a Jewish surname or a central European one?

Thank you very your help.
