Zirkel (ca. 1917 Chicago area)

I recently found a large photograph with the inscription
Ladies Night Banquet and Dance given by the Zirkel November 21, 1917 (photograph by Spandau & Coultry at 117 N. Dearborn St. Chicago)

From the looks of the canvas photograph, it was a Mason event that my great grandfather Herman Rau attended with my great grandma (although I cannot locate them because of the huge number of people in the picture).

Does anyone know what "By the Zirkel" means? Since Herman was born in German and Zirkel is a German word, I am assuming this is an old German organization????Does anyone have history of it?

Hello,
I am hoping you still check the message boards. I have
Grandparents, Josef Novak b. 1875 and Julia Burgermeier Novak b. 1878 who came to the U.S. in 1903 from Ploschitz, Hungary. I have recently found out we might have ties to
Laban relatives and now I see your post mentioning Labans from the same village. I know nothing of our grandparents
families so am eager to learn more. I also have obtained a
book of Ploschitz photos from someone else searching family ties in Ploschitz. It is loaded with various family photos and information.

My email paninnj@mindspring.com

Zirkels in Shenandoah

I am researching my Hoffman family. John Hoffman born 1808 married first Christena Zerkel in Mason County, WV. Both John and Christena's baptisms are recorded in the Solomon Church Baptisms, 1793-1850. It is a transcription of the records listing many, many Zerkels and Nehs (Nease). I own this book. The families moved from Pennsylvania to Shenandoah and eventually to Mason County together. Christena's father was Henry, mother was Elizabeth. Has anyone run across my Hoffmans in your research, any information would be appreciated.
I have a funeral card for Martin Zirkel. It states:

Martin Zirkel,

Died November 11th, 1891
In the 79th year of his age.

'Tis hard to break the tender cord,
When love has bound the heart,
'Tis hard, so hard, to speak the words,
Must we forever part?
Dearest loved one, we have laid thee,
In the peaceful grave's embrace.
But thy memory wil be cherished,
'Till we see thy Heavenly face.'

Memorial card was printed in Philadelphia, PA. I think he was from Switzerland originally and was a minister in PA.

I am looking for relatives. Please send an e-mail to me.

Hi,

Martin Zindel was my grandfather Frank Zindel's brother or father. Martin Zindel was born in 1845 in Switzerland and married Charlotte Frank, b 1844 in Hessia. Martin, Martin's son, was born April 5, 1868 in Erie County Pennsylvania and died in 1933. He was married to Rufa Maude Day from Kansas. Your photo could be of either one as they both lived in Pennsylvania prior to moving. The Zindel family moved to Grand Rapids, Michigan. Is this as much information as you need? I would be thrilled to have a picture of Martin. Please let me know if this satisfied your requirement.

Zirkel family

Thank you Marcy for your interest. I have a book compiled by a family member which puts our branch of the Zirkel family in Estonia in 1709. The were Kahza Ivan and Podza Mari and they had eight children. Where they came from before then I do not know, but it is a German name, and Estonia was ruled by the Germans for hundreds of years. There are many names on this family tree, they all had very many children, but the names seem to have carried on in the generations. For instance there was a Madli there, and a Mari and a Liis and these are my names and my sisters. Jakob, Juhan and Hendrik are very prolific. If anyone has any information on these families I would love to hear from them. Also if anyone wants more information about names and dates, I have these at my disposal.

Albert-Johannes Zirkel

I wonder if anyone can help me? I am searching for any relatives of my father or of his branch of the family. He was born in Estonia on 28 August 1911. He had one brother called Karl-Aleksander who was born in 1904. Their parents were Oskar-Aleksander Johannes 1873-1930 and Pauline-Ida Marie Kevend born 1881. All were from Tartu Estonia, and the family seems to have been there since 1709. They would originally have come from Germany before then;. I know very little about my fathers side of the family as he was killed in 1944 in the war, and would appreciate any news of any branch of the same family. Thanking you.
Baltimore Arrival January 1901

We have information that our family arrived in Baltimore on January 28,1901 on the Stuggart. This information came from a luggage tag. However there is no record of any ships arriving on that date. From anyones past research, was it common to be scheduled for one ship and switched to another?

We had someone search on microfilm and they could not find the ships arrival. In doing a microfilm check at the NARA we noticed that there were different microfilm rolls that are suppose to have arrivals for the same time periods. The service we contracted with only mentions looking at one of the referenced microfilm.
Does anyone know what the diffeence might be between the lists.

Are these records suppose to be fairly complete and accurate?

I noticed one of the microfilm descriptions mentions a federal list. Are there different lists depending on where the ship docked?

SInce the ship they were suppose to have arrived on belonged to the North German Lloyd line which must have had their own facilities, is it normal that there arrivals may not appear on the "so called" official arrival lists?

Re: FESSMANN

Dear Susan,

I came across your posting in regard of "Christian Fessmann, born on November 24th 1838". I have a family tree of the Fessmann family from the Nuertingen area in Germany. I am listed as #502. The person you are looking for is listed as well as #195.

His name is Christian Friedrich Fessmann, born actually on February, 26th 1838 in Nuertingen (Swabian Alb area). My family tree does not list any further information such as date of marriage etc. since Christian ?immigrated to North America in 1860?.

We are not direct relatives. The relationship extends back for 5 generations before our two lines merge. However Christian is listed in my family tree.

He was the seventh of ten siblings. The parents are Johann Georg Thomas Fessmann, born on July 29th 1799 in Nuertingen, died on April 23rd 1879 in Nuertingen and Christina Katharina Muehleisen, born on July 25th 1806 in Nuertingen, died on November 19th 1851 in Nuertingen. They married on June 4th 1826 in Nuertingen.

Johann married again almost two years later on July 17th 1853 in Nuertingen. His second wife?s name was Maria Rosine Margarethe Kurz. Since all of Christian?s nine siblings have a date of birth up to 1849, the nine siblings are all children of Johann and his first wife Christina.

My (and by extension Johann?s) family tree goes all the way back to our ?#1? Michael Fessmann who lived in Heudertheim in Oberelsass (next to today?s German-French border) between 1540 and 1600.

If you want to know more, please let me know. There are 8 more generations between Michael and Julie.

Best regards

Volker
Dear Mary,

I came across your posting in regard of "Julia Fessman". I have a family tree of the Fessmann family from the Nuertingen area in Germany. I am listed as #502. The person you are looking for is listed as well as #365.

Her name is Julie Friederike Christiane Fessmann, born on August, 7th 1871 in Unterboihingen (Swabian Alb area). Married on October 10th 1891 to Eugen Zirkel, born on December 25th 1864 in Deggingen. It also lists Mr. Zirkels as passed away on June 1st 1930 in Maplewood.

We are not direct relatives. The line extends back for 6 generations before our two lines merge. However Julie is listed in my family tree.

She was the oldest of seven siblings. The parents are Karl Philipp Fessmann, born on March 17th 1844 in Nuertingen, died April 5th 1921 in Nuertingen and Pauline Sofie Johanna Klumpp, born on September 4th 1847 in Stuttgart, died on July 10th 1872 in Unterboihingen.

Karl married again a year later on June 10th 1873. His second wife?s name was Sophie Friederike Mathilde Wurster. Since Julie?s oldest sibling Sophie?s date of birth is given as April 11th 1874, she (and all other five) must be half-sisters.

My (and by extension Julie?s) family tree goes all the way back to our ?#1? Michael Fessmann who lived in Heudertheim in Oberelsass (next to today?s German-French border) between 1540 and 1600.

If you want to know more, please let me know.

Best regards

Volker

Our Fessmann line can be traced back to about 1540 in Alsace-Lorraine. The Fessmann's were early followers of Luther's Reformation and migrated to the Nurtingen region of Germany (south of Stuttgart).
My great-grandmother, Julia Fessmann Zirkel immigrated to Newark, New Jersey around 1892. She had two cousins, Frieda and Heinrich Fessmann arrive in New York in 1893. Frieda later married a man with the last name of Glattes and had a daughter Helen. I do not know what became of the Heinrich Fessmann branch of the family. Please let me know if this connection fits in with your family

My husband's mother was a Zirkel from Brooklyn,NY. Her name was Marjorie. She married George William Benecke and had 3 sons, George,Jr(my husband), Dwight and Ronald. She died in Oct of 1949. Her family still lives in the Long Island, NY area and his cousins there have a large history research on the Zirkel family. If anyone of you know any of them, they could give you what they have in research. I understand there is a website, but I don't have the address.
