Erin, my mother has probably contacted you already, with not much more information. My oldest brother Joe (Jan 1964) is a son of Santo Giuseppe Zoda, and although my mother was married to him, she didn't know much to pass along. But Joe is now very interested in his own paternal roots, and nobody seems to know anything helpful.

The Zoda family that you typically find listed in Indiana originally spelled their name Zody. Some branches of the family started spelling their name Zoda instead of Zody in the late 1800's. This Zoda (Zody) family originally came from Germany. Heinrich Zote, also spelled Zode, eventually spelled Zody in the US, originally came from the village of Arfeld, Germany in the late 1700's. His wife Louisa (Marie Luise Althausen) came from the village of Richstein, Germany. They married in 1796 in Bremen, Germany, and came to America directly after on the ship Batavia.

Your post is quite old and I don't know if you will get this. Bill Zoda is a distant cousin. His mother and my mother were Amodios. I don't know anything about your Zoda roots but can give you Amodio information to before 1800. We are all descended from Carlo Amodio and his wife Aurelia Foggi. I come from their son Joe and you come from Joe's older brother, Fedele who died in 1869.

frank Lumia

I am very curious as to why, after a year, I have not gotten any response to previous requests for information regarding family history. I am again asking for some help in finding something out about my two sons paternal grandfather. All I know of him is his name is Santo (Sandy) Zoda. He had one son (that I knowof), which is my ex-husband, named Sam. He was stationed in El Centro, CA in 1950's and then in Alaska before it was a state. Anything(even if it is to say we don't talk of this person) would be greatly appreciated by my sons as well as myself.

My two sons are interested in their name. Their father was born in El Centro, CA on April 28, 1958. His name is Samuel Russell Zoda, his father's name is Santos or Santo Joseph Zoda, he was stationed at whatever military base was or is there. The only other things I know of is there were quite a few members of the family living in New York with most of the men being named Samuel and many of the women had the name of Sarah. Am needing to work on my issues with my ex-mother-in-law as she knows a few more details but we aren't on good terms at all. Appreciate anything!

Jacob and Hattie with their children, Ella M., Charles, and Harry are recorded in 4th Ward City of Mansfield, Richland Co., 1870 Ohio Census. I believed they had a son in 1871 named Dexter. The two boys plus Dexter are listed as living with relatives in 1880 Indiana Census. I would like to if you have any informations as to what happened to this family.

Sam's real name was Emilio. He had three children:
Tom (Buddy), Mary and Caroline. All are now deceased. Tom had two children after he moved to Texas. I've since lost contact with them. I don't know of any other living relatives with the Zoda surname in the U.S.

I know that both Sam and Vincenzo met untimely deaths, but have no idea of what happened to the other siblings, except for Eugene. He lived in New Jersey for a long time, and I think both his son (also Tom) and grandson (Eugene?) may be deceased.

A cousin of mine tried to contact a person he thought was the grandson's widow, but had no success. He also tried to contact what seems to be the last relative in Sicily, but got no reply.
Dexter Zody was born May 31, 1871in Wood County, Ohio. His parents were Jacob Zody and Esther Harvey she was born in Wisc. Dexter died in Howard County, Texas on May 18, 1930. He was buried at Marion, Indiana. This information was taken from his death certificate.

I found Jacob and E. A. Zody died August 1872 in Wood County, Ohio of sick stomach. Alot of this was listed at this time period for cause of death. I do not know what this was. His age was 37, her age 35. This information came from Death Records, Wood County Probate Court Vol. 1 (1867-1887) page 36. I can not find any cemetery records for them. Dexter is not listed in the birth records of Wood County, Ohio. But there are guardianship papers for Dexter and others. I will send for this in the next week.

Also found Solomon and Mary Zody Smith were in Wood County, Ohio. Mary is Jacob Zody's sister. Solomon Smith died June 1911 and Mary died October 8, 1907. They are buried in Webster cemetery in Bloom township. Henry Zody was there too but I can not find any information in the death records. There is an estate in the year 1896.

That is all for now.

Elizabeth

Joe,

Thanks for the information. It is just what I was looking for.
I do believe that Catherine Ebersole Zody was the daughter of Abraham Ebersole d. 1845 Bedford County,Pa. He leaves a will naming all nine children. Catherine intermarried with (It looks like Jacob Lody) but on other papers it clearly has Jacob Zody on it.

I never have been able to pin point where in Virginia the Ebersole's once lived. Abraham is in Bedford County, Pa. in 1796 and then disappears till 1817 and from that point he stays in Bedford and is traceable.

Could you send me your files through my mailing address?
Elizabeth Stager, 376 E.
Heinrich Zody and Louisa Zody, ( possibly spelled Zotte in Germany), were the first of our line in the US. I don't know the dates, but I have it shown in my records that Louisa Zody was born in 1773. I don't know her maiden name. They had 5 children.

Their son, Jacob B. Zody, born 8/4/1807-died 9/17/1885, was married to Catherine Ebersole, born 11/8/1804-died 6/8/1879. Jacob B. was born in Franklin County, Pennsylvania. Catherine was born in Virginia. Both are buried in Sante Fe, Indiana. They had 10 children.

Their son, Jacob was born in 1834. I don't know the date of death. He was married to Esther Harvey, born in Wisconsin. They had three children. I have a copy of of an 1860 census page from Miami County that show Jacob as a 28 year old farmhand, ( this a couple years off from adding up right).

Their son, Diexter Zody was born 5/31/1871 and died 5/18/1930. He was married to Mary Miller. I have a copy of Diexter's death certificate.
The spelling I have on my records shows the spelling Dexter, also, but it is written as Diexter on the death certificate.

I have made PDF files of all of my records. I can send them to you.

Joe Zoda

Sorry, I don't have anything on this family. Has anyone gotten a death certificate for Dexter? This would have his parents names on them.

I will check at Hayes Presidential Center in Fremont, Ohio to see if they have anything on Richland County, Ohio. When I was at the Ohio Historical Society in Mansfield last year, I looked at the cemetery records and copied off all Zody entries. His name was not there. However he could be buried in an unmarked grave. I also copied off all Zody marriages, too. I do know that Jacob's brother was is Mansfield so there were plenty of relatives. For now this is the best I can do for now.

Elizabeth

Researching the Jacob Zody family of Miami County, Indiana. Could his Jacob's wife Catherine's maiden name be Eversole, daughter of Abraham Eversole d. 1845 Bedford County, Pa.? According to Abraham Eversole's will, he names his daughter Catherine intermarried to Jacob (looks like Lody). Other papers pertaining to his estate names a Jacob Zody among other family members.

Does anyone have the deathdates for Jacob and Catherine Zody?
