April 30, 2007 marks the 100th anniversary when Aristidis Zompakis (Zombakis)arrived at Ellis Island from the Greek Island of Chios. The economy during this period was in horrible condition, so politicians encouraged immigration in anticipation that their men would find work, send back money and return with savings to restore financial stability. In 1907 alone, 42,086 Greeks would arrive in the USA, so Aristidis made the difficult decision to temporarily leave behind his family and boarded the S.S. Californie. He eventually journeyed to Chicago, Illinois with its sizeable Greektown and worked for several years before returning to Chios circa 1911. Despite the anti-immigrant prejudice of the times, the Greeks enriched this country by working in mills, railroads and factories across the USA. Aristidis died on December 7th, 1942 while Chios was still under Nazi occupation
