Between the time I posted my original inquiry and now, I have determined (from the Clementina Zona - Nicola Rocco Antonio Zappone marriage document) that Clementina Zona was the daughter of Guiseppe Zona and Luisa Denza. The Giuseppe Zona who married Maria Giuseppa Prata is a different Giuseppe Zona.

I changed the ancestral chart on the MauleFamily website (which is mine, incidentally), but did not yet change the ahnentafel because it is undergoing a substantial revision.

Out of curiosity, are you related in any way to the Zona or Zappone families?
Re: Zonas in Eastern Europe

Here's an update to my original post . . . three years later. Maybe three years from now one of the respondents will read this post. My father (also John) was the son of John Zona (we're really creative with our first names) and Anna Melacharek (guess what my Dad's sister's name is). I think my grandfather is from Chvojnice (in the Nitra region of Slovakia), and my grandmother and father are from Vrbovce (also in Nitra, I believe).

Grandfather moved to New York, and remained there until he died. I recently tracked down his social security number (via census info) and requested his social security application for any information I can gather from it. I also found a Vrbovce website that had my grandmother's maiden name dating back to the 1700s. The Slovak heritage website also had records of my grandmother's and grandfather's surnames, and I have requested further information from them.

My father has post depression-era memories of having an uncle in Michigan (I believe on his father's side). My father also has memories of someone (I think he said his sister???) marrying someone with the last name Hussar. After discussing ancestry with my father, I'm pretty sure my father's side of the family comes from what is now Austria and perhaps what is now Hungary. I don't know of any connection to Pennsylvania.

Laura,
We are interested in any information on Slovak Zonas. My Grandfather, Stephan Zona, came over as a small child in the 1890's. He settled near Wilkes-Barre. PA. He married Julia Hayer, another Slovak immigrant about 1924 and had 4 children. He died about 1945, well before I was born. My family never had much contact with the Zonas after Stephan died. I believe there are still some distant relatives in the Wilkes-Barre--Scranton area in addition to my two uncles who are in their 70's. Neither one of them has much of a clue about any family history of the Zonas. All they know is that their father came over from the old country.

I read thru all the Zona posting and it seems that there was two Assunta's discussed. I would like information on Assunta's Husband and her parents if possible.

I am interested in any family history you may have on Zonas. I am aware that my great-grandparents, her name was Assunta Zona, came from Italy. My grandfather, Albert, was actually the second born and lived most of his life in North Huntingdon, PA.
(dob: 17 March 1912 died: 24 Nov 1991)
Though I am uncertain which city his parents actually came from I do know that it was indeed Italy.
I thank you for your input and help.

Wendy,
Nick is the deceased brother of my deceased grandfather, Albert "Bucky" Zona. They were the two older boys of our great-grandparents. I am at a lose for his name but her name was, Assunta.
They were married in Naples Italy and migrated to PA before any of their children were born, according to my records. Both Nick and my Grandfather were registered in Italy, because their parents had hopes of returning to their home country.
Out of the 9 children, only two are still living, both still in PA. (There were 7 boys and 2 girls.) I would love to hear more from you and perhaps exchange information. I have only 3 or 4 generations completed on the Zona lineage. But my grandmother is still living and has a vast knowledge of the famliy history.
Thanks,
Avarey

Assunta was married to Enrique Zona, also from Naples. She and my gret-grandfather had 9 children all born here in the USA. I am not certain what their parents names are buut I know I have that information somewhere in my file banks. I am wondering if your Assunta is a sister of my great-grandfather's. I know several of his family members came over from the Old Country. But I am interested in knowing more about this and plan to search tomorrow and call my grandmother to ask if Enrique had a sister named Assunta as well. Please feel free to email me, I will continue to watch for posts.
Thanks, Avarey

Zona surname in Trieste

Maria Zona wrote her son, Gianetto, in Charleston, SC in 1870 from Trieste. She mentions her brother Laschi and Uncle Zona who have died. She also mentions Gianetto's brother, Pinni. Gianetto changed his name to John Edward Jones when he came into the US. Does anyone have anything to add to this information? John Edward Jones married Catherine Rose Morgan and they had Vincent, Daniel, Catherine, John and Thomas George.
Ann Rose
