Surnames: Zorda, Elmore, Brown
My branch of the Zorda family arrived in the US in 1894, when my grandfather Frank Zorda immigrated from Italy to New York when he was 18 months old. We know very little about his family. He always said he was born in Florence Italy March 27, 1892. From his Social Security Application (SS-5) we know his father was also named Frank Zorda and his mother was named Theresa Matzic. These are not typical Italilan names but more like the names in what used to be Yuygoslavia now Serbia.

In the 1900 US Census, Frank is shown as an orphan at St. Joseph's Orphanage in Queen County, New York. None of the computer indexes of the 1900 census that I have seen show any other Zorda family members living in the New York City area. However, sometime in the 1950's Frank returned to New York of the funeral of his brother.

After a brief hitch in the army during WWI where he served stateside in the enterrtainment grop at Camp Upton Long Island, Frank's career was in the carnival business. He traveled the country in animal drawn and then later motorized circus caravans. He was a magican and later ran the sideshow. He retired to Atlanta in 1964.

In the early 1920's he married Willie Gladys Brown from Troy Alabama (daughter of Frederick M. Brown and Louise Curls). They had three children Theresa Louise Zorda (my mother) who married John Cecil Elmore, Frank Zorda, Jr. who married Ethel, and Mary Alice Zorda who died in a car accident at 7 years of age. Frank and Willie were divorced sometime in the mid 1930's but seem to stay in close contact. Frank never remarried. All of these people are now deceased.

The family moved to the Atlanta area in the 1930's and the Elmores are there today. Frank Jr's family may still live in the Atlanta area but some of Frank Jr's children died very early.
