Zorn Family and Delilah the Indian

I am trying to track down information about my great-great-great grandmother who was Native American. She was 'owned' by William Hightower who I believe 'inherited' her through Catherine Zorn (who he married). Delilah married a slave named Abram (Junior) (whose father Abram Sr was from West Africa and whose family was purchases by the Zorns, I am told). Any purchase, deed or slave records that have the name Delilah or any information about Zorn relations with Native Americans would be appreciated. Thank you.

I have a "Catarina Ruland" on my family tree (my Grt-Grt-Grt-Grt Grandmother) born probably b/t 1785-1790. She married Peter Knepp & they lived in PA. They had a dtr Catherine Knepp 1808-1860 who was born in PA but died in IA; she was married to Benjamin Kamberling.

I am wondering if she might be a descendant of your Mary Catarina Ruland. I have not been able to trace her lineage.

As a direct female descendant, I have maternal DNA results.

LorieNYC@aol.com

By any chance do you have a Catherine (Katherine) Zorn who married F. C. Freese in your Zorn book? Catherine was born 1809 and died 1890 in Carver, MN. She and Friedrich Carl Freese came to America in 1850 (NY) and made their way to MN via PA and IA. They had 3 children: Bertha, Clara and Otto.

Sarah's name along with all her children is in the old family bibles. It is also Sarah Ann Eliza on her headstone. My own mother is still living and remembers her grandmother very well along with her name. Sarah also has two other living granddaughters that I am aware of and who have said that she was named Sarah Ann Eliza (not Elizabeth). Again, I really think the confusion on her name is because of her mother’s and daughter’s middle name of Elizabeth. Great Grandmother also named one of her daughters Eliza. So yes I know beyond doubt that is her name.

I am aware that the census has your great grandmother as Mary O. Hall. I was originally given the name of Mary Ann Orpha from direct family and then sourced it. I will investigate further for I refuse to use any information that is not sourced.

Use of middle name Ann or Anne:
Her great grandson has confirmed the use of Ann in Elizabeth Anne Jane Hall. It does not appear on her head stone. The 1880 Brannens, Dale County census as well as the 1900 Brantins, Geneva County census also lists her as Elizabeth A. J. Underwood.

The 1880 Geneva County census lists great grandmother as Sarahann E. Other verification is family bible and her headstone, family information.

Nancy Anne Hall is listed on the 1860 Dale County census as Nancy A. She married Ben Yonn. I do not have much information on this couple. I have had a difficult time tracing them. Other than the census, my sources are the same as Sarah’s.

I personally do not think it strange that Sarah Ann Elizabeth West would have given her four daughters the middle name of Ann after herself. The name continued in our Sasser line as Sarah Ann with Eliza and sometimes Elizabeth or Liza used.

Dates:
John James Hall 07 Apr 1830 – 09 Apr 1865. Name on Stone is John Hall Sr. Sarah A. E. West (her stone reads SAE Hall, wife of John Hall Sr. Born Dec 11, 1833 Died Feb 16 1897). The information for John is taken from memorial marker at Bethlehem Primitive Baptist Church Cemetery Houston County. Great great grandmother Sarah is buried there. Again it is also well known family information.

John Dallas Sasser born 23 Dec 1857 Henry County, Alabama; son of Lewis Sasser and Mary Cordelia Bess. Great grandfather died 02 Nov 1912 in Malvern, Geneva County.
Sarah Ann Eliza Hall born 12 Jun 1857 Dale County Alabama and died 09 Sep 1942 Malvern, Geneva County, Alabama. They are buried at Bay Springs Baptist Church, Houston County. I hope to find their marriage certificate on my next trip home in June. An marriage approximate date: before 17 June 1880. The 1880 census for them was enumerated on 17 June 1880.

I do not have confirmed marriage dates for your great grandmother Mary to either husband. Perhaps someone else will have those and share them here.

The Hall line also has Zorn's. Leccie Mae Zorn daughter of Charlie Zorn married Elbert Hall, son of Richard Hall mentioned in this thread. I would be interested in knowing Charlie's ancestry.

I found the above to be born in Germany. It seems that they came to America, wound up in Kentucky, had four children while living there and then disappeared. Did they go back to Germany? Their home town was listed as Kirchardt, Baden. But maps do not show a Kirchardt. Is any of this familiar to anyone? Thaks.

I had never heard "Anne" in reference to my Great Grandmother, Mary Orphy Hall and all I ever had for Nancy was the "A." Looking at it now......all the girls must have been named ANNE! On your Sarah Anne ELIZA, I had it as ELIZABETH, making it as her mother's name. Do we know that it was ELIZA or could it be an abreviation of sorts?

Sally

Ginny,

I’ll answer on the board for any other “cousins” who are following along. The “Mary Orphy Hall” b. 30 March 1858 was the Grand daughter of Orpha Riley Hall b. abt 1811, N.C. Mary’s father was John James Hall, Sr. b. 07 April 1830, GA, son of Luther Luke Hall and Orpha Riley.
Mary Orphy Hall married (1) John D Jones b. abt 1860, GA. DOM abt 1878, probably Geneva Co.. Their daughter was Zelia Ann Celita ( Seleta ) b. Nov 1880 in AL d. 19 June 1932 in Dothan, AL. Zelia Ann married ( abt 1894) Lawrence David Boyett b. 12 April 1874 in Crenshaw Co., AL.. Zelia and Lawrence had eight children who lived. My mother was the youngest and is the only living. She is 90 and lives with my husband and me.

Mary Orphy Hall Jones married (2) Ellie Owens. They are buried at New Hinson Baptist Church Cem.,Geneva Co.,AL. My source for the “Mary”, as well as my Grandparents, parents and siblings, would be my mother’s personal knowledge as told to me about 45 yrs ago when I first became interested in my family history. I still have the piece of paper we wrote it down on!

Your Elizabeth Jane Hall Underwood was my Great Grandmother’s sister. She, Mary Orphy, thought so much of Mr. George Underwood’s mother she named my Grandmother after her. I,in turn, received my middle name for my Grandmother, abeit, the spelling has changed somewhat. From Seleta to Celita.

I would appreciate any better dates and places than those “abts” I’ve listed above, if you or other cousins have some. As for your Sarah Ann Eliza Hall m John Dallas Sasser. Thanks for the “Dallas” I only had D. How about dates and places of birth for him and marriage date and place for the two of them.?

Thanks for the reply. I look forward to our exchange of information.
Sally
ZORN in Washington/ California

Does anyone have Zorn in WA, CA or surrounding areas? In particular one married to Catherine/Katherine/Katie. They may have married earlier in OH as Katie was born abt 1867/1868 in OH. Her family went to CA abt 1892 and she is mentioned in her mother's probate abt 1893. In 1905 I believe, she signed saying she lived in Seattle area.
I have been working on the Zorn of Louisville, Ky.. has anyone else done any further research? I have 4 Zorns and their families
1. John George Zorn and Catherine Gertrude Stoll
2. Jacob Zorn and Catherine E. Popp
3. Andrew Zorn and Eva Diederich
5. Martin Zorn and Katherine M. Ruth

George, Andrew and Jacob were listed in the 1859 directory; George and Jacob owning coffee houses (taverns)

Andrew is listed as a shoemaker

Martin is not in the directory, he is listed as a shoemaker in the census.

I also found a Sebastian Zorn in the 1860 census in Brandenburg, mead Co., Ky....which is not far from Louisville. He is listed as a shoemaker.

I know that familia names were common back then, and see a pattern with Andrew, Jacob and John George.

Just hunting for more info....

Ginny,
Richard Franklin HALL married to Ella Jane BUCHANAN was a brother to my maternal Great Grandmother, Mary Orpha Hall.
Richard & Ella were married at the home of Richard and Mary's sister, Elizabeth Jane and her husband, George Underwood. My Grandmother was named for Zelia Ann Seleta (Celita) Underwood, Mr. George Underwood's mother.

I see Sasser in your surname list. Would that be the line of John D Sasser and Sarah Ann Elizabeth Hall? The only child I have for them is William H who was born and died on valentines day 1892. If this is your line, or if you have information to help me complete this sister of my GreatGrandmother's, I'd appreciate it, greatly. Sally

If it helps at all; the census used Germany as a loose basis to cover Prussia, so include swedan, norway, poland, brussles, germany, etc in your search....

Hi there. Would you happen to have a Carl Edward Zorn in your tree that was born in 1899 in Illinois. I'm trying to find out who his father was. It seems as though the census' say that his father was also born in Illinois but I can't find out who that is. His mother is a woman named Lena but I don't know her maiden name. She married another man named William Lyons by the time Carl was 11 but I can't seem to find out who Carl's father was.

Thanks for any info you can pass along.

I just started doing research on the Zorn's. I've seen the name Minnie before I think but don't really know if it's connected. The man I believe is Carl Edward Zorn married, at the age of 21, Ora Francis Crow and had at least 6 kids: Merry, Lena, Carl Jr. (although the middle names seem to be different), Robert, Charles & Madlyn. The first 4 were born in Arkansas, the last 2 in Missouri. There may have been others. Actually, I'm sure there was at least one more named Dorothy (or Dorthy) who goes by Dot.

I'm looking for info on this man. I know there is a Carl Emil Zorn who was my grandfather born in 1923. I'm looking for his father who I'm pretty sure had the same first name but I think his middle name was different. I'm told it was Edward and that he was born around 1899. I have Dec 17th as a possible month and date. I would love to get definate info since I haven't really been able to find this person.

The younger Carl lived in Lafe, Arkansas at the end of his life. The older once seems to have been born in Illinois (although I had previously thought it was Germany--I think my mom was confusing his story with the Brandenburg story) and lived in Missouri for a while. I don't think he stayed there though because my mom's story was that he left my g-grandmother once all the kids were born. His wifes name was Ora Frances Crowe. I think, from what I've been reading, is that his mother's name was Lena Cohen or Lyons (could be the same woman:one name being maiden and another being another married name?) and his father, I think, was Jacob. I can't be sure though. I believe his birthdate may be 12-17-1899 but, again I'm not sure. Thanks for any info anyone can give me!!
