Surnames: ZURBRICK, ZURBRÜCK, ZURBRIGG, ZURBRÜGG
Hello Zurbrick Researchers:
As of June 2003 there has been a major update to the Zurbrick Pages at http://indigo.ie/~ohalljp/zurbcem.html
This website has grown a lot in the 5 years that it has existed, thanks to the generosity of Zurbrick researchers.
A lot of information about the early Zurbricks has been added from parish records in Alsace-Lorraine. The Zurbricks (or Zurbrücks) that settled in Erie co., NY in the 1830s once lived in Alsace-Lorraine for 150 years. They spoke German and usually called themselves German, since Alsace-Lorraine was once part of Germany. But there is strong evidence to show that they were from Switzerland originally. The name is most likely derived from the Swiss Zurbrügg. Some of the families that intermarried with the Alsace Zurbrücks were also Swiss, such as Hügel and Kocher.
Other Zurbricks that are found in Canada and the USA today came directly from Switzerland via Canada in the 1800s and were Zurbriggs or Zurbrüggs. The name was often changed to Zurbrick after they immigrated to North America.
Good luck in your research,
Linda Zurbrick O'Halloran
