I am searching for information about my Great Grandmother, Anna Zych, who married Jan Pepek in the Kepa Szczucinska area around 1888. She had two children, Jan Pepek, possibly born 1889, and Marya Pepek, born 1894. Marya's married name was Witaszek. I believe Anna died in the Medrzechow area, possibly in the early 1930's. Both of her children settled in Upstate New York in Oswego and Syracuse.

I was searching for an Albert Zych on Ancestry.com. My search produced a WWI draft registration in Chicago for your Wojciech. I didn't check the record but his birth year was the same as my Albert.
My primary research is for HUTCHINSON. Albert's daughter, Genevieve ZYCH, married Fredrick Dale HUTCHINSON.
Albert and family were in Chicago for the 1920 and 1930 census, In 1920 Albert's place of birth was Austria and in 1930 it was Poland. His wife was Tillie STEMPA, Albert's date of immigration was 1904. Children's names are Helen, Joseph, Genevive and Leona. It looks like we have a match!

Hello, Rob, we are another Zych family, originally from Hamilton, although, we have now largely moved away from Hamilton. Dad, Mieczyslaw, born 1918 in Poland and died in Hamilton, Ontario 2000, was a Polish army soldier, escaped Poland with the military in fall of 1939, made it to Britain, helped liberate Holland (as Polish Free Army, under Canadian leadership), married Dutch woman, my mother, immigrated to Hamilton in 1952, raised four boys and a daughter, lived near Ivor Wynne stadium in the lower city, attended St. Stan's Roman Catholic Church. Father was an only child and we had no relatives here in Canada when we were growing up.

Austrian connection

My father did mention an Austrian connection more than once. My father stated this his mother would occasionally say that his father (Peter Zych) was not really Polish but Austrian. Of course, if you look at the changes in the borders of the countries in that area the last couple of centuries, you can see that the borders were changed many times. Because of the spelling of the surname and the location of the towns my father remembers, I've always wondered about a Czech connection, also. Thank you for your kind reply and I too will keep in touch. My e-mail is zych@earthlink.net. Have you ever researched the suffix -al as to its possible origins? May prefixes and suffixes are only to indicate relationship. For example, Peter-son and Fitz-gerald, both indicating son of... Once again, thank you.

My name is Judy Kinney, My mothers Maiden name was Zychal. I was questioning if you are sure about the spelling and if it could possibly be Zychal. My grandfather was born in Austria, but my Grandmother was either polish or Jewish, there is some confusion about her last name. But anyway, many names were misspelled when they entered the UnitedStates, and I was questioning if there was a possibility that your name was changed. I too have had problems in finding any Zychals. I wish you luck in your search and who knows mabe somewhere they made a mistake in either of our names and we could be in some way related. If I find anything that our name was added to I will E-mail you and if you find out that there is a lost Joseph in the family, my grandfathers name was Joseph Zychal. I wish you luck in your search.

Zych surname- Poland

I can't believe there are no replies to the message I posted in March! Where are the Zychs'? It's not a common surname. My father stood at the border of Poland at the end of WW2- a weary soldier with a new wife and a son he hadn't seen back in Rhode Island. He was afraid to go into Poland to try and find his mother, Barbara Piecuch(sp?) and sister, Francesca -unknown married name. He had already seen so much devestation in Europe and Aushwitz was located not far from Cracow and Tarnow- the borders of the Carpithian mountains where his town was. My fathers' father was Peter Zych and he was killed in WW1 in the Polish air force- I imagine one balsa wood glider...As Ben Stein said in Ferris Buellers' Day Off... Anyone? Anyone?

Zych surname

Reply to Suzie: It would seem that there are not too many with this surname. Please refer to my message posted in March 2001 on the Zych Surname Message Board. My father also came from Poland/ Austria. Of course, the borders of Poland changed so many times, it's hard to know. My father was born in 1907- I put the wrong year on the message board. His town in Poland was close to Tarnow. My father did not have any brothers but maybe a cousin? My fathers' sister was older than him and had children. Her first name was Francesca and I don't know her married name. My father did not locate his family at the end of WW2 although he stood at the border of Poland and considered going in to try. He had already married my mother in Rhode Island and had a son he had never seen so he went home. More importantly, he was afraid of what he would find- he had already witnessed so much devestation in Europe. The deathcamp, Aushwitz (Oswieczm) was near Cracow. Thanks for listening- I don't know if there's a link but I wouldn't be surprised. Thanks. Mary Zych

ancestry

I am interested in any any, all information regarding the Zych surname. My father was John- possibly born in Kentucky vs. Poland. His parents were Peter and Barbara Piecuch (sp?)- he was born December 13, 1906- he had one sister, Francesca. The family had a farm in a town near Cracow. My father also had an uncle who lived in Manchester, NH- same surname. The uncle had daughters- there is some connection (possibly cousins) to a bakery in Manchester, NH. My father came alone to this country sometime after WWI- stayed at first with the uncle. His birth family may have lived in Kentucky when he was born and returned to Poland prior to WWI which allowed him citizenship when he returned. My father, John Zych served in the 1st infantry (Big Red 1) in WW2- North Africa, Sicily, Omaha Beach w/ Omar Bradley. Any replies welcome.

Just saw all the messages here. My grandfather was a Stanislaw Zych from Borowa, Poland. He had a sisters Catherine and Bronislawa (Bernice) and at least one other brother who came to the US. He came in 1905. Does this sound familiar to anyone?

I understand that the name ZYCH goes back to the 1300's as is. It's not unusual in Poland.

While looking for information about my family (Kolwick), I came across the Ignacious(Earnest) Zych family tree and was hoping to talk to the person who put it out there. I believe we are distant cousins. I believe that I am somehow related to Anna Kolwick listed on the tree. But I don't know how yet. I know my father told me that he had a cousin Martha Zych who was a nurse in WWII who was KIA in England. The Zych tree that I found mathes his story. I would really like to hear from anyone in this family.
