Surnames: PAUOLE, HARVEY, KUKAHIKO, HANAPI, HEPA, DeMELLO
I have a Katherine R. HARVEY who was born in 1866 in Honolulu. She married Edward KAWAIHOA on May 1, 1895 in Honolulu. He was born 1862 in Honolulu. They had a daughter, Gertrude Kawahilehua HANAPI, born August 30, 1888 in Honolulu. She died January 24, 1965.

Gertrude HANAPI married Mitchell John Kameaike PAUOLE on April 27, 1915 in Honolulu. Mitchell was the son of John PAUOLE and Kalua KUKAHIKO who were both born on Kauai.

Any information on these families would be appreciated.

According to the records that my family has given me, Kalua Kikahiko was the name of my Great-Great Grandmother who at the time was "married" to John Kukahiko. It is said that this was his second marriage. Out of this second marriage, there were four children. Halemanu, Kaahanui, Keanu and Halelau. My grandmother comes from the Halemanu line. We have no records regarding Kalua and I am hoping that there is some link that we can find on her. My understanding is that her maiden name is Halulukahi.

I have this family name under my wife's family, therefore I am not sure what the true relationships are, but I have Kalua KUKAHIKO born about 1866 in Anahola, Kauai, Hawaii. I have her married to John Papoko PAUOLE, born 1862 in Anahola, Kauai, Hawaii. I have three of there children as Mitchell Kameaike Pauole, Robert Pauole and Hattie Pauole. My wife's grandfather was Mitchell Pauole, who died on Molokai. I am not sure if this helps.

Dear John:

Thank you for your response. Do you have any information on Kalua Kukahiko. Is Kukahiko her maiden name? Was she ever in Maui. The age that you gave sounds about right and she may have been married to John Kukahiko who she had four children with. There was no record or anything about her. If Kalua was born in Kaua'i, then I have been looking in the wrong place for a long time, I was looking in Maui. My Tutu is still alive and recalls a lot of her childhood days.

If we are talking about the same Kalua, I can tell you that the Maui family is huge!!! I told my Tutu, I not going marry no Hawaii, I might be related to them. A family recreation center was just opened last year near Chang (one of the family) beach. I don't know the details and it's a long and drawn out story about who owns what share of the land and what not. The first family or the second family (Kalua Kukahiko's children). I just want to know for my kids sake. Thank you so much for responding.

Hi Aleta,

I found a couple of sources. One was a cousin of my wife's who had done some research. I have lost that information, but it is also posted at http://www.familysearch.org/Eng/Search/frameset_search.asp. You should be able to go there and put in the name of the person you are looking for and it will bring up the information that I had given you on Kalua Kukahiko. Now, I have this as her maiden name. I have her married to John Papoko Pauole. The information that I have on the PAUOLE family is very good. John Papoko Pauole is the father of Mitchell Pauole, who is my wife's grandfather.

Do you know the names of the four children of Kalua Kukahiko? I only have three? Do you know it one of them is Moses?

I cannot confirm that Kalua Kukahiko was born in Anahola, Kauai, Hawaii. She may have been from another Island?

Thank you for your information, and good luck in your search.

John

Hi John:

Gee, I am so sorry for not responding right away. I didn't see it.

Anyway, the children's names of John Kukahiko and Kalua Halulukahi Kukahiko are as follows:

(1) Halemano
(2) Keanu
(3) Kaahanui
(4) Halelau

I am not sure if they had English names as the information I was given doesn't indicate that. Interestingly enough, the name Kaahanui is John Kukahiko's mother's name. But then here again, it stops at Kalua because there is no information on her. Just on John Kukahiko and his lineage.

After talking with one of the Aunties, I was told a pavillion was built in Makena and soon a library will be made with all documentations they have will be housed there. She also told me similar stories about a "special shark" that would "visit" the family in Makena. My Tutu told me these stories as a little girl and Aunty confirmed that there was a shark that was fed by them when they were little.

Does this ring a bell?

Regards,

Aleta
