My son-in-law is a Steelman, descended from Hans Mansson. Two of Hans Mansson's 9 children were James Hanson Steelman (my son-in-law's line) and Peter Monseur Steelman, listed in your response. Is this a real connection? How much more data do you have. I have quite a bit. Your response is right on the edge of a Steelman family question ...apparently it has been hard to verify the Mansson/Peter Monseur Steelman/Matthias Steelman connection, and thus the connection between the "NJ Steelmans" and the "NC Steelmans".
I am searching for Steelman info from New Jersey. My gg grantmother was Eliza Steelman who married Job Young. Do you have any information?
I have a reference to a marriage in Gloucester, NJ on 12 Mar 1936 of an Eliza Steelman and a Job Young. However, I have no known connection to the rest of our family.
The reference is "Gloucester Co., NJ, Marriage Records'", Gloucester Co. Clerk, 1827-1844. FHLC #0441463, Item #4.
I too am connected to the Hans/Matthias line. I have just finished the line from me to Hans Manssons' father and I have found many Matthias in the family. It seems that back in the 1600's and 1700's, it was not uncommon to name your children the same names as your father, mother, brother, sister, etc. I have only one problem. I have went back to John Joseph Steelman and then there is a gap between him and Matthias and can't find for certain. According to the book "Descendants of Matthias and Ruth Steelman of Surry County, NC" by Harold M. Steelman, there was three Steelmans in this gap. The names are Charles, George, and Charles John. Can anyone help me verify these names? If I can help with any of the rest of the line, just let me know.
I have the Matthias and Ruth you mention in Surry, NC. But I
only have one child for them: Charles, b. after 1750, d. 1843 in Surry, NC.
However, I do have some ancestry for Matthias:
Matthias - b. 1735
George -b. ~1712 in Great Egg Harbor, Gloucester Co., NJ
md. Phoebe Adams
Peter -b.~1664 in Gloucester Co. NJ md Gertrude or Gartara
Hance Monsson -b. ~1620, Skara, Sweden md Ella Olofsdotter
I would like to have your family and ancestry back to Charles. My son-in-law descends from Hance Mansson through James Hanson Steelman. Andrew, Peter, etc. all in NJ.
I have a bunch of Steelmans across the river in Delaware. But few in NC.
Yippee!! I just got the dates on the last gap I had on the family line. I will get it typed up and I will email to you as soon as I get it done, Expect it within the next day or two. I have from me all the way back to Hans Mansson's father through Matthias, including all of Matthias kids.
I know, it's 2 years late! I just ran across your posting and can't remember if I answered you before or not. So, here is what I have going back from Matthias Steelman (son of George Steelman and Phoebe Adams). Probably not much use to you, but it's what I have. We corresponded back in 2005 about the Steelman lines. You sent me an attachment with your line back to Hans Mansson. I guess I got busy and into something else and never followed up on it. The problem was, I don't have Word Perfect, so I couldn't open your attachment!! Would it be too much trouble for you to send it again in some other format? Word, .pdf, .txt, etc. Thanks!!
