Linda and Carol,

My grandmother's maiden name was Anaka. Maybe there's a connection.

Around the turn of the 20th century, Wasyl and Elena (aka Lena) Anaka, immigrated from Bukovina, near Chernivtzi, and homesteaded in the Canora/Gorlitz area. Their children's names were John, Anna (born in 1888), Peter (1889) Nicholas (1890), Oksana (my grandmother, born in 1892), Andrew (1894), Maria (1897) and Stephen (1904).

Does this sound familiar? I have a little more information. If any of this fits with your family trees, please e-mail me.

Carol and TG,
Sorry for the delay in answering (sick relative). It was great to hear from some relatives on the Anaka side. The following is from a Gorlitz, Canora area history book.
The Anaka family can be traced to the time of the Nepolionic War Period. "Anaka, a Commissioned Officer in the Russian Army crossed the Dnister River and settled on its banks. In time more people settled there and the village was named Doroshiwtsi. From this clan of Anaka's, 3 brothers, Harry, Andrew and Mike, with their families came to the Gorlitz area in 1897. 5 years later (1902) another 3 Anaka's arrived and settled here ( Steve, Michailo, Hryhoriy)."
So the families are all connected but to confuse it they all use many of the same first names. I have many cemetery listings. If you can send me exact names and dates and parents, sibling and childrens info. I am trying to make a proper tree. Who is the person in Regina who is working on it?
Thanks,
Linda

Hi Linda, My father, Ernest Anaka was born and raised in Canora Sk. Oct.1930. His father, George Anaka married Iren Lekum there and had 5 children, Mildred, Rose, Terry and Shelly. My grandfather, George Anaka's father was Wasyl Anaka who immigrated to the Canora area from Ukraine. When I read other postings mentioning Wasyl or Wasil Anaka, I am confused and finding it difficult to search as names are close but not exact. Wasyl's wife's maiden name was something..Gispadryk, I think. Please let me know if there are any connections..Thank you.

Originally 3 brothers and 2 brothers who were cousins homesteaded in that area. A lot of them used the same names for their children. I just moved last week so I can't get at my files right now but I will get back to you with more details. (If not email me again)

Dear David: I just happened across this page today while sitting at work. My maiden name is Anaka. My father was born and raised just outside of Canora Sask, in a little town called Swan Plain, where his family owned the general store there. My fathers given name is Wasyl, and I beleive his fathers name was also Wasyl. My father was the youngest of 13 children all living in Swan Plain and Canora. I am wondering if there is any connection between your family and my family's history? Small world. Many of our relatives are still in Canora to this day. Others are here in BC. Would like to hear from you on this subject.

Hi Linda,

Thanks to your post and the mention of Doroshiwtsi, I have finally figured out the Bukovina village of origin for one of my Ukrainian immigrant families that I'm researching. They also settled and homesteaded in the Gorlitz area.

You mentioned that the information was from a Gorlitz/Canora area history book. Could you please tell me the title and publisher of the book, and if you know where I might possibly get a copy of it?

It's probably a long shot that you're still monitoring this post, but I'm giving it a try nonetheless. If anybody else knows about the book that Linda is referring to, I'd appreciate hearing from you.

Cheers!

Richard
