Hi Susan. Did you ancestors originate from Detershagen, Mecklenburg, Schwerin, Germany?
It is an unusual surname, isn't it?
Regards, Pam.

Could the spelling of the last name also be AULD or AWL? I also have relatives from that area. There were some brothers from Ireland came to America around 1700's. The spelling of their name was AWL. I have seen this last name spelled AWL/AUL/AULD.

Hi Susan. My German ancestors Aul changed the spelling to Auhl when they came to Australia. Two of the family - Carl Christian Christoph AUL b 4 AUG 1815 and his brother Johann Carl Friedrich AUL b 19APR 1823 went to America. What part of USA I do not know. Their parents were Johann Friederich Christoph AUL and Maria Sophia Margaretha PRUTER. All came from Detershagen, Germany.

Dear Susan:
I would have sent this e-mail, but your e-mail address is not listed, please put it in reply. I do not have a dated on Casper, but she was my great-grandmother(?) listed as female in my baby book. The last date I have on anyone is Laniy Lawrence Aul - born in Georgeville on Sept.3, 1875. Please keep in touch, or e-mail me at eightisenough@hotmail.com . I am very interested in finding my family. As I stated before, my father Arthur Melvin Aul past away in Sept.1987, only leaving me an Aunt and some siblings from another marriage. I geuss he was married several times, so there is rumor of more siblings. I will be awaiting a response either on this message board, or in my E-Mail. Thank you Marguerite Aul

Hi Susan. My information came from Ratzeburg
Cathedral - this was because they held all the records of the
Schleswig Holstein area. I am not much help to you (sorry), but Hesse seems to be a State of Germany and if you can find out from your LDS or Historial Society the addresses given for Hesse, I suggest you write to them. I found mine when I was at my wits end - I was fed up and Ratzberg was my last address. Pity you couldn't nominate a place or Village where your ancestors come from. Any chance of finding something out from a Shipping List from Germany to the States, or what about the Church your ancestors attended when they first arrived? They may have quite comprehensive records. The Lutheran records of the Church my ancestors attended in South Australia was excellent.
Regards, Pam.
