Dear Nick

I am also a CAR from Australia - my father, Marijan Car was born in Silo, on the Island of Krk, Croatia. I am searching for family history on the CAR family from that region

Regards

Approximately three years ago I discovered that my maternal Ukrainian grandmother's correct surname was NOT Czar but Car. It appears as Car on her ship's manifest in 1906 when she came from Polany Surovychi Sianik (Galicia) Austrian Hungarian Republic. Polany was her ancestral vilalge. She was Ukrainian. Spoke Ukrainian and Polish and Hungarian.
Came as an orphaned 15 year old to Ellis Island and Newark New Jersey. In cyrillic on the church records her namae of Car is spelled UAP. The church records show her as Teodora or Teodosia Car / Tsar. But, my mom spelled it CZAR. That is probably the Polish spelling or anglicized spelling. There was one Car family in her village in the 1700's and one in a neighboring village........being she was orphaned, no siblings......I doubt if there is a line. She came to U.S. in 1906 and married Semko Kowalczyk in about 1910. I have all the church baptismal records of my mom Anna and her siblings. Anyway, for what it's worth......she was a Car. Her father Ivan (John) Car came to America first to try to earn money to bring his wife and child over but was killed by a train. His wife found out when a black edged letter was delivered to her in Austria Hungary......she later died of melancholy and my grandmother was sent to live with her own grandmother. When the older lady died.......my grandmother was totally orphaned. She came to America as a maid servant for a Tekla Polanska who owned a boarding house in Newark, N.J. All I know is my Grandmother Tedoroa Car 's father was Ivan Car. Polany is now in present day Podkarpackie Poland, Sanok District.

I was recently contacted by a person with the surname Car who wanted to know if the Carr Surname Genetic Genealogy Project was for his Car surname as well. His Car ancestors lived in Croatia. The answer of course is yes. A DNA test gives another way for family historians to identify those they are related to. With all of the movement of people over the last two centuries, DNA may be our only way to identify cousins who have lost track of their ancestors.

My family originally came from Crikvenica and moved to Silo (island of Krk), where they still live. My grandfather Anton Car went to New York in the 1930's and disappeared. My grandmother Marija Car died soon after. My father Marijan Car migrated to Sydney Australia in 1951 and later moved to Western Australia where he met my mother.

I am still in contact with my family in Croatia.

My mother and father both came from Crikvenica in Croatia. My mother's maiden name was Car, as was my father's mother's maiden name. It's a very common name their and usually you are known by another name which may denote where the family originated or some other connection. My mother was known by smitinka (Pronounced shmitinka).

My father came to Western Australia in 1925 and my mother in 1934, when they were married.
