Hola!

Gina, I saw you logged in last week so hope you pick up this message. I know enough Spanish to read your message from 2002. My grandmother was a Castagnola from Borzonasca, in the Sturla Valley, inland from Lavagna, in the province of Genoa. Do you know exactly where your Castagnolas were from? There is a very small town named Castagnola near Borzonasca It is a fairly uncommon name. Many Castagnolas went to the San Francisco area and apparently to Santa Cruz. Mine came to Chicago in 1900 & 1904 where many Borzonascans were already settled from 1850 onward.

Hi, have you searched Giovanni Castagnola? I just found a record recently that has his daughter as a Rose/Rosa!

Sorry I haven't been on the board recently! My Spanish is terrible and I think I was responding to an earlier post in Spanish that has been deleted.

Anyway, generally what I know is that there was a migration of Castagnolas from a town called Riva Trigoso in Sestri Levante near Genoa. These Castagnolas were accompanied by Ghio's and Stagnaro's in particular. In fact, sometimes I wonder if there were any people left in Riva Trigoso! (There seems to have been a slightly earlier migration from the town to South America. It's not really relevant, but sure is interesting.)

The CA Riva Trigosans settled in Santa Cruz during the first decade of the 1900s, where they still have descendants today. Some of the families moved north eventually. My line comes from Dominic Castagnola and Caterina Stagnaro. I definitely have more info since I first started posting on the board and am interested in hearing about what others have!

My grandmother, Rose Castagnola, was the daughter of Paul Castagnola and Bernadette Olivieri of Riva Trigosa, Genoa (Genova) Italy. She came to America and the from NY to San Pedro, CA. She met and married Biaggio Iacono from Ischia, Italy. Some of her Castagnola cousins settled in Santa Barbara, CA., and started the Castagnola Lobster Houses along the coast.

My husband's great grandfather was Felice (known as Felix) Secundo Maria Castagnola, and he was born in Genoa in 1844,the son of Giuseppe Castagnola, a barber, and his wife Maria Torre.
Felix had three brothers, who were apparently all of Garibaldi's thousand. Felix was sent back to his father when he applied to join because he was too young.
He married an Englishwoman, Mary Ann Kent Dowdeswell in Genoa in 1873 and spent the rest of his life living in England.
I would dearly love to push the line further back, so if you have a connection with Felix and his parents I'd love to hear from you.
