Thank you for your reply to my Chertkow quest.
My wife is Carol Herbert MD, her professional name,(see www.med.uwo.ca
). Her father was David Chertkow and grandfather Gitman Chertkow. Gitman immigrated to Winnipeg Canada, about 1910, and his family, wife, six sons and a daughter immigrated in 1912 or 1913. Gitman died suddenly, while the family was enroute to Canada. Little is known about Gitman or his birthplace.
What is known is that his children were born in what was southern Russia, now the Ukraine, near Odessa. David Chertkow who was the second youngest, said he was born in Constantinovka about one days journey by wagon from Odessa. Other members of the family reported they were born in Vosnesensk, near Nikolaev or Nikolieva.
Since the name is uncommonthe and is translated from Russian and the Russian Cyrilic alphabet, the name may be spelt in English as Chertkow, Chertkov, Chertkof, Chertkoff, I am collecting as much information as possible on all Chertkows to find if there is any link. I understand that many Jewish people in the south of Russia, relocated there from northern Russia, and Lithuania early in the 19th century. Times and conditionbns were still tough and many of course moved on to South Africa and America.
I have seen the Chertkow name in South Africa and would like to continue to correspond with you and any others.
I have in my file Mark Chertkow, Seymour Chertkow, B Chertkow (piano teacher, examiner). If you know these people, can you tell me if they are related -- and their relationship to you -- as well as provide me with the names of any other family members?
For future research it would be helpful if you could provide me your father's name, and any other family members who may have come from Lithuania. The name of your Chertkow grandmother and her family could also be helpful in future research.
If you are searching on the Web for Chertkow, it may be helpful to identify the names of my wife's family.
In my father-in-law's family there was the father, Gitman, sons Moe, Jack, Tony, Israel, David and Irving. Daughter, Gertie Chertkow Wilder (www.bmb.com
). Mother was Passy or Passia Sheps. If you do a internet search you may find cousins, Paul, Howard, Mervin, or Gerry, Beverly Chertkow Bronfman, or my wife's sister, Dr Gloria Gutman.
I hope this is helpful in your search. I think one of the details I will have to concentrate on is some future research on records in Russia or the Ukraine. With my family I have just acquired records from POland providing me with my great-granparents names. THere is information available but knowing where to search is most helpful.
