I also descend from Benjamin Coopwood through his son David. I haven't had a chance to look for Benjamin's ancestry in England, but I suppose you have heard the story that Benjamin fought in the Revolutionary War and was disinherited by his father in England for that. It seems there ought to be some record of a Coopwood will after the Revolution, but it would take some digging. Here is a website for you to check out: http://www.geocities.com/Heartland/Creek/7402/barbee.html

Mrs. Clark descends from David's brother James. Which of David's children do you descend from? I have some information on David given to me by a cousin. I'd love to hear from you.

My GGGrandmother was Elfida Coopwood, dau. of David Coopwood. Elfida was marr. to David Clarke who was born in Conn. I am trying to put together a family history of David Clarkes ancestry and decendency. The decendency I have a pretty good hold on; However I havent been able to get any further back than David Clarke from Conn. I do have some ancestry of Elfida Coopwood through her GFather Benjamin Coopwood. Any information that you may have on David Clarke or Coopwood would be welcomed. I can be reached at joenathanclarke@aol.com,again thanks for the reply to my message.

Thanks for your reply. I have 8 children for David and Elfida, but your Elfida wasn't one of them. Could you send her dates and places? Here is what I have:

1. Male Coopwood, b. about 1818 and died before 1830. He is based on the 1820 census of Lawrence Co., AL.
2. Martha Ann Coopwood, b. 1820, d. 11 Jun 1844, m. William H. Wilson.
3. Nancy B. Coopwood, b. 1821, m. Gideon B. Wallace.
4. Benjamin F. Coopwood, b. 1822, d. 1918, m. Eliza A. Nowlin.
5. Delilah Beatrice Coopwood (my ggg gma), b. 9 Feb 1825, d. 6 Jan 1904, m. Asa T. Nowlin (son of Stephen Nowlin).
6. Bethel Coopwood (described as the "colorful lawyer", commanded a spy company during the Civil War), b. 1 May 1828, d. 12 Dec 1907, married Josephine Woodward.
7. Male Coopwood, b. 1825-1830. He is based on the 1830 census of Lawrence Co., AL.
8. David Coopwood, b. about 1832, m.1 Mary J. Green, m.2 Martha L. Nowlin (dau. of Stephen Nowlin).

Was daughter Elfida born after 1830? David died about 1832. I do not have this family on a census in 1840, but by the mid-1840's at least some of them were in Mississippi. Delilah married in DeSoto Co., MS, 1 Jan 1846.
According to Goodspeed's Biography for Gibson Co., TN, Elfida had a sister Sallie, b. in VA, who married Robert Corley in VA and then moved to TN, eventually settling in Gibson Co. Sallie died in 1846 and Robert married her widowed sister Elfida. She died in 1857 and he died in 1858. I have looked for Crews in the census, but there is not much before 1820 in TN. I have looked a little for information on the Thomasons in VA before the Revolution and found nothing definitive yet. So I guess I can't extend your information, just fill it in a little. Would still love to hear from you. You can post to this forum or e-mail me at bkje@uswest.net.

I have a tree for Benjamin Coopwood - based largely on the work of others for the old time ancestors and on my own family history work for current descendents. It can be found at:
http://worldconnect.genealogy.rootsweb.com/cgi-bin/igm.cgi?d...

The barbee tree the Alisa mentioned has more stories than mine. My posted tree has mostly just names and dates. We have lots of overlap on the names and some minor differences on dates. Lin Barbee Clarke has been at this a lot longer than I. However, I have some of the family stories that I can send by e-mail.

I have this marriage as being the daughter of THomas Coopwood, not David Coopwood.

In your response re: Elfida m. William David Clarke, you mentioned that you have that female listed as married to Thomas Coopwood. Do you have b.,d., and/or known location for Thomas? Even though that is a common first name, it is a recurring name in my father's family. His father (a very, very fair-skinned black) was born in Germantown, TN March 1885. Perhaps I can take this lineage backwards to find out whether there is any truth to the name change story.

Thomas Coopwood father of Elfida/Elfreda

This Thomas Coopwood is the a son of Benjamin Coopwood. Benjamin is the first Coopwood I know of in America. Thomas was b. Sept 11, 1793 and d. Oct 8, 1862. He had a son, Thomas Benton (brother of Elfreda), b. Sept 11, 1829 d. Oct 3, 1879. This branch of the family lived in Palo Alto, MS from 1860-1879. That's NE MS (Monroe and Chickasaw counties), but far from Memphis. There was another Thomas David Coopwood (b. 1857) who lived in Mt. Pleasant, Marshall Co, MS about 10 miles from Memphis/Germantown TN.

Hello, Alisa! My GGgrandmother was Delilah, whose son David Coopwood Nowlin was born in Polk Co., TX in 1854, where she moved with my GGgrandfather, Asa Tilmon Nowlin. Which of the children of Asa and Delilah is your ancestor. My little book of family history done by my great aunt in the 60s shows the others as Andrew Jackson, Laura, Jabus, Dr. Bethel, Dr. Asa, and Effie. Where do you live? I live in Oregon -- grew up in Wilbarger County, TX, which is where David Coopwood Nowlin went to in 1885 when he left (I think) Polk or Tyler County. He was a rancher and died in 1903.
