I am looking for information on my gg-grandparents, WILLIAM JOHN CUPP and MARY E BURNS or BURKE. They resided, I believe, in Preston Co, WV. Their daughter, SARAH MARGARET CUPP, was born Feb 8, 1858 in Bird's Creek, WV. Sarah married Robert Wolfe and resided in Masontown, Preston Co., WV. Any information would be greatly appreciated. Thanks

Hi,
Don't know whether there's a link, but my
great-grandfather was Andrew Cupps married
to Jane Matthews. He adopted her daughter
named Emma, but they were all in Pennsylvania
even though Emma (my grandmother) moved to
West Virginia later.

If there's a connection, please let me know.
It seems I remember Butler County being
mentioned, but I'm not sure.

Where in Pennsylvania did your CUPPS family reside? I am researching this family in the Pittsburgh area. Charlotte Cupps was my grandmother, Charles Cupps was my great-grandfather. I also have John Cupps, Florence Cupps and Susan Cupps, but I'm not sure yet how they all relate as I found them in a family plot in Lawrenceville.

All I know is that my great-grandfather was Andrew Cupps and that he was a Civil War veteran. He married my great-grandmother (Jane Matthews) and adopted her 3-year old daughter.
The last place I know that they lived before Andrew died was in
Pittsburgh, PA. It seems to me that I remember my grandmother saying that Andrew had been married previously and had sons in Butler County.
Don't know much more than that.

I have been talking to my cousin Steve Cummings. Our family name (his sister, my dad) is Cupps. My Great Great Grandfather, John Cupps was born in 1830 and he married a woman by the name of Anna Matthews who was born in 1833. I am not sure if John was from Pgh or St. Louis. John's son Frank was born in St. Louis, MO on 10/18/1862 and died 3/29/36. Anna's parents supposedly immigrated from Ireland before she was born. I don't know anything about siblings re: John or Anna. Perhaps, we are related in some way? Cupps is not a real common name.

John Cupps was born in 1830 and married Anna Matthews who was born in 1833. John was my Great Great Grandfather. I do not know if John had any siblings. There is also a nephew, John W. Cupps who was born in 1854, a niece Charlotte b. 1873, and nephews Harry b. 1856, Charles A. b. 1869 and Lawrence b. 1877.

John Cupps (1830) had a son named Frank A. Cupps born in St. Louis Mo on 10/18/1862 and d. 3/29/36. He's buried in Calvary Cemetery which is in or around Lawrenceville. Frank had 5 siblings. John W. (b. 1854), Harry (b. 1856), Charles A. (b. 1869), Charlotte (b. 1873) and Lawrence (b. 1877)

Frank had a son by the name of Edgar (my grandfather) who was born 9/18/01 in Pgh, and died 3/26/46 (my dad was 16 at the time) Edgar had 5 brothers, Albert (1890-1946), Lawrence, Wilbert (for whom my uncle Skip is named), Howard (1893-?) and Raymond.

I also found a Samuel Cupps on a plaque at the Soldiers and Sailors Memorial Hall in Oakland, PA. He was a Pvt. in the 5th Regiment of PA Volunteers. This regiment was mustered in, April, l861, and mustered out July 4, 1861.

If any of this info is helpful to you, please let me know. I am searching for any and all leads.

thanks

My great grandmother, Jane Matthews
came from England and married a Civil War
veteran, much older than she. His name was
Andrew Cupps. He was a widower with grown
children, but I don't know any of their names.
I believe Andrew and Jane lived in Pittsburgh,
but I think the rest of Andrew's family was
from Butler County. Wish I had more info.

Barb, your information sounds suspiciously familiar in terms of the first names. However, everything I have found to date shows my Charles with an H middle intial rather than an A, but sloppy handwriting could be to blame. His wife was Susan McKeown (1869-1943) and their daughter, Charlotte, was born in 1900 and died in 1964. For some reason, Charles is not buried in the same family plot as the rest of the family in St. Mary's RC Cemetery in Lawrenceville. Has Calvary been read?
