Are you related to the Davitts that went from Mayo to Haslingden?

My grandad always said his family came from Castlebar or Westport - he didn`t know which as he saw very little of his father and knew nothing of his early life. His brother Bill was born in c 1902 in Haslingdon and believed his father came from there but all the others were born in Lancaster and most stayed there.

Greetings to the Davitts of Liverpool from the Davitts of Lancaster. If you have any James davitts in your family history then I would be very grateful to hear about them.

hi brian,

Although there are a lot of Michaels in my family (my grandfather was Michael Edward Davitt who came to Liverpool, UK at the turn of the century) I'm not aware of any of my recent family who emigrated to the US from Ireland or the UK.

regards

Michael Davitt

We are also Davitts from Brooklyn, and Francis was a common middle name except that the first name was James. You are very lucky to be right there in Brooklyn to start your search. Get your grandfather's birth certificate and it will tell you who his parents were. Also if you are Catholic go to the Diocese or Church where your Grandfather was baptised and get his baptisimal certificate, this will give you more information on your greatgrandparents.

Hi there,
As you can see I am also a Davitt and I'm from Mayo. I come from a little town outside Westport called Newport (approx. 11km). I just thought you'd like to know that there aren't that many Davitt's around the Westport/Castlebar area - I can only think of one other Davitt family offhand. However, I have no idea if any of my ancestors emigrated to the U.S., but perhaps my father would know - his name is also Michael Davitt.

Regards,

Sandra.
